Hey everyone,
I'm (finally) getting into the Ys games after meaning to for a very long time, but unfortunately I've run into a problem when trying to play Ys I Complete: Screen tearing. It's just awful and hurts my eyes after a while, rendering the game unplayable. I've read threads on this board looking for a solution but I haven't been able to find one.
Here are my specs:
Windows Vista Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 4890
Flat Panel display
The game is English-patched and runs fine. I don't notice any flickering, which seems to be a common problem, and there are no issues with the colors. The only issue is the screen tearing. I have also noticed that the game runs at a steady 29 FPS--is this normal?
The screen tearing wouldn't happen if the game had a native vsync option. Forcing vsync to be always on from Catalyst Control Center doesn't work because it only applies to 3D games, apparently. Trying to force vsync with D3DOverrider also does not work.
Forcing the game to run in windowed mode (by creating a shortcut and adding a -windowed flag to the Target dialog) gets rid of the screen tearing, but it requires that the game be run in 256 colors (via compatibility tab) which screws up all the text in the game, making it impossible to read. The same thing happens when I attempt to run the game through DXWnd.
So I'm out of ideas, short of getting a CRT monitor. Does anyone know of a solution?
EDIT: I tested out Ys II and the FPS hovers around 2000. The screen tearing problem is still there, but it's hardly noticeable, I'm guessing due to the very high frame rate. There is also no music.
EDIT 2: Fixed! On a whim I tried maddjakk's patch from this thread and the game suddenly runs at a steady and smooth 59 FPS with virtually no noticeable screen tearing!
Now, I wonder if there's a way to bring Ys II's FPS down to a sane level and get the music to work...
