Hello I'm a very new player to the Ys games actually i didn't even now the name.I was looking for a good jrpg to play and a friend of mine suggested Ys iii-oath in felghana for PC.I played it and loved it.Than i played Ys i & ii chronicles for the PC but i didn't like the older looking graphics and game dynamic of no "attack button" i played a while but just didn't hit with me.So I'm interested in PS2 remakes of Ys iv & v but some comments written in here says these two remakes are terrible. And i want to play Ys vi and origin on PC.And i don't want to play games with "older" graphics. So my questions are how accurate the negative comments on these games and how much do i need to know about first two games story to be able to enjoy these games. For the Ys iii i didn't think i needed a lot of background story at all.and if you can give me any other necessery info that a new gamer need for these series? Thanks in advance.

As a preliminary matter, you can pretty much play the games in any order and be okay. There are references and the like but mostly you don't need to worry about it to really enjoy any given game. The only major exceptions are II (direct sequel to I) and Origin (works much better if you've played at least I-II first). If you're really curious I can dig up a (non-spoiler) list I wrote on another board that has all the connections. Beyond that, first question is whether you care about understanding the story or if you're just looking for the gameplay. If the former, playing IV on the PS2 or any version of V is a non-issue because they're only available in Japanese. V SNES has a translation patch being worked on but that's a subject for the future. Assuming that you're looking mostly for gameplay, if you paid attention in I-II you know everything you need to know to play any version of IV. Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys have full translations but if you didn't like the bump system of Chronicles (the most evolved version of said system) and don't like retro gaming you might just want to wait until next year when Falcom finally releases their own version of Ys IV (Ys: Celceta, Sea of Trees) which uses Ys Seven's system so you've got an attack button, Skills, multiple characters and all that stuff that it sounds like you'd like better. The odds are also very very good that XSEED will be localizing it. Something about Wyrd ripping his clothes off and telling Falcom to take him right then and now when he heard the news. For the PS2 games specifically, yes, they really are that bad. For IV, there's pretty much no reason to play A New Theory when Falcom is going to be releasing a better in every way game within a year and even before YsC was announced it wasn't worth recommending unless you absolutely had to play with an attack button. The game feels like Oath in Felghana on an extremely limited budget, the map design is annoying and bland, the battle system is both slow and stupidly easy, they actually managed to make attack magic in IV worse than either Mask of the Sun or Ys V (SNES), the plot changes were nonsensical... Oh, and when your music fails to stack up to a game that's almost 20 years old, you're doing something wrong. V worked out slightly better because the original game has massive issues and Taito actually made some fairly debatable improvements to the gameplay and magic is a bit more useful (they learned their lesson from IV) and the music... well, that was one of V's big faults in the first place so there was hardly anywhere to go there but up even if the end result is still unimpressive next to a real Falcom game. As you can tell, these games are something of a hot button issue for me. I could go on for pages... Oh yeah, you didn't mention playing Seven. If you haven't yet, go and grab a copy right now!

What Yotaka said.
The way I got into Ys was treat it like a story and play through each game in order to find out the next 'chapter'. Plus a lot of characters kept reappearing in different ways and that was cool to see.
