I just discovered this series and played through the first game and became totally addicted. I'm looking forward to continuing the series chronologically (unless you guys think I should play it in a different order). A quick search on this site revealed that there hasn't been much discussion on the Apple IIGS version of the game so I thought I'd post my review of that version. Having not played or seen very much of the other versions, are there major differences or sections that are missing? Here's my review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E4YNETYkBQThanks

Great video! Not enough reviews have phrases like "Go. Die. Mother fuck!" It was very enjoyable. Unfortunately, Red Hairdo seems to have fallen off the edge of the board; he'd be able to tell you everything about every version. All I can say is, you'll want to check out the more modern versions: either Ys I&II Complete for windows, or Chronicles for PSP. As a late comer to the series, I couldn't get into the older iterations, but enjoyed Complete very much. I can say this though: Melificus?! I thought he was called Dark Fact in EVERY game.

There's no missing content in the Apple IIGS game. In fact, it's incredibly meticulous in its faithfulness to the Japanese PC versions.

Just played though the first 20 or so minutes of the PC-8801 version and both versions seem pretty much identical except, well, ones in Japanese The PC-8801 version did have a much better intro though, complete with nice music. Alright, time to get the next game in the series...

I think the PC-8801 version was actually the first version of Ys released by Falcom. Another version of this game I'd recommend is the one for PC-Engine/TurboGrafx, specially for the music. I think the only other version that can compete with those arrangements is the remake for PSP. If you play the Complete version for PC, I'd actually recommend that you use the patch that's floating around this forum to replace the songs there for the Chronicles version.

tanrunomad: You aren't missing out by playing the Apple IIgs version. (Except for the last boss' dialogue! It's suspected that version was given an older, non-used script for Kyoudai to translate from!) You will get more details if you play one of the remakes, though, with the best two options being Ys I & II Chronicles on the PSP (localized for the US by XSEED) or Ys I.II Complete for Windows (there's an English patch for it). I still haven't finished that version (Apple IIgs); I stopped around the last few floors, but I plan to "finish it off" this week. It's a great version; Its musical arrangements feel very different from the many other versions out there, and in a very good way. @wyrd: I have been wanting to rip or record the OST of this particular version for quite a while now... It's incredibly fun, sounding different from anything we hear out there in all those other versions or musical arrangements of the games. Well, it isn't the greatest thing ever or anything, but it's assured entertainment. About the names, definitely (Riobardo for Goban XD). But for some of them, you can actually see where they were coming from (Darm -> Daan, for example). It took me a while for me to realize the similarity between certain names, though! ("Ogien" and "Dogi", for instance: if you ignore the "D", you have "Ogi", whose intended pronounciation isn't that different from "Ogie". The extra "n" in the end didn't change thaaat much they way it sounds. Ogien. Dogi. Still a weird change nonetheless!) @raison: Malificus in that version/DOS version, and Dulk Dekt in the English Sega Master System (Sega Mark III) version. Dark Fact everywhere else where it's been localized in English. Aaah, I missed talking of these.

I never even noticed how similar they actually were. Malificus on the other hand...

That was the mandatory cheese insert.

Some person years ago once appeared here with a beta or prototype copy of that Ys I version, actually. Physically owned and all. I forgot how the story went, though. Maybe the topic is still here somewhere in the "Ys I" subforum?

I've got this. I guess it's rare simply because it's pretty old now, but it doesn't tend to go for a lot. My copy's box is pretty beat up, but I remember getting this off of eBay a few years ago for about $10. It is interesting though in that the full name of the game is the namesake of our little community here. : ) If I remember correctly though it's definitely got some differences to it. Correct me if I'm wrong Red, but doesn't Dark Fact say something about how he plans to take Feena for his own once Adol is defeated and out of the picture? Something ridiculous I remember. lol Anyway, here are some photos: -Thomas

Pretty cool. I didn't know this version existed. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I figured it fell into the "rare but not particularly valuable" category, like most of my old PC/Tandy Color/C64 games. Did your copy also come with a 3.5" disk?

It was supposed to come with 3.5" disks, but my copy did not come with this set. Maybe that's why it was only $10. : )

Ah okay... I wonder if the game fits onto a single 3.5" floppy...? My old DOS copy of Leisure Suit Larry is 2 5.25" floppies and 1 3.5" floppy. Nice how they included both. If I ever snagged a copy of Ancient Land of Ys I would definitely need to have a 3.5" disk. I actually have two ancient Zeos and Amstrad computers that have 5.25" drives, but they're buried in the closet. My 2003-era XP machine + 3.5" drive + DOSBox seems like a much easier solution.

It actually shares some alternate Ys I script Falcom made back in the day also seen in the Famicom and X68000 versions of Ys I, so it's actually canon! Or was. xD God knows what's up with that odd Falcom script. (Oh, and naturally the Apple IIgs version.) By the way, since you guys are talking of that version and considering looking things up, I think it'd really pay off if you actually found a copy of the Apple IIgs version of the game and played it on an actual Apple IIgs, if at all possible for any of you. That version in particular has got KICKASS music! Sounds extremely distinctive compared to all the other versions ever released.

Hm, I must get that checked, myself. It's been a while. I wonder if the Last Moment of the Dark track wasn't just "hidden", though, because the Devil Corridor music, for example, is VERY easy to be completely missed out: it plays the moment you load into the room, however you won't get to hear it at ALL if you move Adol at all. You have to stand there, completely still. And I have to say, that was too probably the eeriest and COOLEST version of the Devil Corridor music ever made!

Hey this looks just like Ys MSX, awesome! But it's missing the beautiful goddess intro screen, and the beepy music, which are in the MSX version.
The MSX version of Book I is still my all-time fave game...

The MSX version is more colorful, actually. Graphically I'd say the closest cousin to this version (and thus also DOS) is the original Ys I (for PC-88/98, FM-7/77/77AV, X1turbo etc.). Oddly, I think not many versions are that close to the MSX one in that regard.
Also, if you miss the beepy music, you can't go more beepy than the DOS version, but in that case I wouldn't say it's a good thing. =P

Since I'm currently playing this particular version and people here have been talking about the soundtrack I thought I'd record it while going through the game. I don't know if it's possible to directly rip the audio from the disk images but since I haven't found this version of the ost anywhere this might be the next best thing. The songs are in wav format and I've only done a minimal amount of editing, mainly to convert them from mono to stereo. Maybe someone who is a little more experienced in sound editing can polish them a little more so that jdkluv can put em up on his youtube channel. It's not my favourite rendition of the Ys I soundtrack but I think it's quite interesting nontheless. Here's everything up until 'Palace of Destruction': Part 1I'll add the rest as I'm going through the game.
