Was anyone ever able to beat the expert mode of this game? Can't seem to find the last few script commands being used anywhere so I assume they're in the expert mode scenes.

I am creating an account just to let you know that as a fan of VM series I really appreciate your initiative. It seems to me you are translating the original not the power-up kit correct? I think that is a fair decision since the expansion requires the original and I suspect not many people are motivated enough to get an expansion of an obscure title.
May I suggest that you may want to finish menu translation and image editing first? It will be at least playable in case you had to abandon early. The story is really simplistic and minimal and is mostly just there to serve as an excuse for the campaign mode. I am sure you have the determination but well things happened you never know RL can be a ****.
I am 100% sure that VMJ is class of its own in terms of SRPG and it will attract a niche fanbase just like it did in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. VMJ may not be as well received as some other titles here since the Falcom fanbase is mostly RPG centric but the broader SRPG fanbases will surely appreciate it.
There are really few resources on the VM series in the west. Hardcore Gaming 101 has a review on both VMO and VMJ. GameFAQs has a pretty throughout guide on the mechanics. You may want to check it out if you haven't look at it yet. There are also replays and walkthroughs on youtube which are recorded by extremely good players. And that's about it as far as I know.
Again thanks your for efforts. Personally I don't need the patch but I will be sure to get it when it is finished and will make sure to recommend it to as many people as possible.

Based on his RHDN thread i think it is for vmj plus expansion. Maybe he will clarify. I'm also hoping an eventual patch will work with this. That is far easier to get than tracking down a retail copy.

If I'm not mistaken you can just buy the game from Falcom directly. I didn't get my copy from Falcom, but I've ordered from them many a time and it's pretty easy.

The thing about the non-expansion version is that the only difference is maps and some images. If you want to play those older maps, you have to boot up the original exe. I haven't had to do any .exe hacks yet, only datafile hacks, so it shouldn't matter if you boot up the original or expansion. You will need the expansion to get the patcher working though. I've only been focusing on matters pertaining specifically to the expansion version. Actually la mulana PC came out recently, so I've just been playing that for the past four days, while making dumb stuff like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=npEFHyORxQI

Hi Kil, by any chance have you come across any places that sell just the Power Up Kit for VM Japan in either the original box or by download? I have the original boxed version of VM Japan, but I do not have the Power Up Kit Expansion. It would be a shame if your patch didn't work with the regular edition and required the Power Up Kit that seems to be difficult to find now, at least for me so far. I see it being sold at Falcom's website as a download with both the game and the Power Up Kit, but I'm just interested in the Expansion.

I don't know about JUST buying the expansion unfortunately. I'm thinking you probably can't anymore.

Apparently you can now: This is what they have listed. falcom.com/game/game_windownload.htmlI don't know about JUST buying the expansion unfortunately. I'm thinking you probably can't anymore. That's unfortunate. I'll have to see if I can find it then sometime. But to clarify, we would need this if we want to install he patch currently as far as things are planned so far, correct? -Thomas

You should be able to copy the translated data files into the data folder too, but then you'd have to download 100 megabytes worth of data files at least. But, maybe you could play the game without the expansion.

But, maybe you could play the game without the expansion. Problem remedied. I was able to get a set of VM Japan and the VM Japan PowerUp Kit today. It'll be an extra VM Japan for me, but I can always let that go to someone here who is interested or eBay. I found it being offered on Yahoo Japan Auctions. It'll still be a few more months before I get my orders sent over. Looking forward to the translation! : ) -Thomas

Sounds like an interesting tool. : ) How exactly does it work? You said that you used the tool in one of your videos with Adol in VM2.

Thanks for the offer. Are you the guy I talked to on YouTube who sent me the super hard mode data01.dat? Thanks for that. That replay tool sounds interesting. I don't know anything about the format of the battle maps or RAM during battle. Maybe I could learn some things from it. By the way guys, I haven't posted any progress in awhile because I'm still working on i.imgur.com/LQhsd.png which will allow me to edit and manage any type of datafile. Probably could even use it to deconstruct SNES game roms or something.

Nice, thank you. I have figured out some of the format for the maps (all of the map headers, and some of the map data itself). I probably won't make my own editor for that because it's too much work creating a good GUI.

Kil has given me permission to translate this. I'm not using any of Kil's original translation (except a couple phrases I liked here and there), but I am using his incredible program.
I'm about 30% done. The most annoying part is found in having to play the darn game though. Does anyone have saves they can find or share or something so that I can load maps, etc?
Or does anyone know a code or cheat to instant-win maps? It'd help me test this dialogue a lot.
I am not going for a 1-1 dictionary literal translation, but instead what is known as a meaning-literal translation. In the translation field, this means that every word and grammatical phrase is represented in some way, but this can be through slang, dialogue, punctuation, etc. This style also focuses on meanings, so collocations, idioms, diminuatives, etc. will be translated to their nearest English equivalents rather than translating them directly. Additional content can, and will, be written in order to give context as Japanese is a highly contextualised language.
Before I get requests, I am not taking editors, beta testers, etc. Currently I have an editor and all beta testing will be done by me.
However, if people can supply me with saves, I will distribute your names in a "thank you" in the txt file to be distributed with the eventual patch.
