Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for awhile, and on seeing this thread about BTDR I felt the need to join in. I have managed to hack the game's executable file to get its functions/menus to English. For this I used WWWJDIC (my knowledge of Japanese isn't much at the moment) and MadEdit in hex mode. I've tried editing the item and list .tb files from Japanese to English but no luck there. Their entries (items & enemy names) still displayed in Japanese, as naachan mentioned earlier. Now the .scp files under PSP_GAME/USRDIR/data/script and .../data/ext/script will show English in game if edited. Here's a PPF file to make a translated version of the EBOOT.BIN. Export the BOOT.BIN from the game's PSP_GAME/SYSDIR to your computer and apply the patch. After patching, rename it to EBOOT.BIN and use it to overwrite the EBOOT.BIN on the game's PSP_GAME/SYSDIR. Link to PPF file. (about 6 KB)

Now if we all work together, it may indeed be possible to play this game in beautifully crisp English and spread the love of Brandish even further.

You're welcome, Ghaleon. So glad to chip in on this. Hopefully more people will get to appreciate Brandish, especially in its best form on the PSP.
I did get stumped a couple times by the Japanese text but thanks to Sardien's walkthru at GameFAQs, I was able to get through those few bits and play it through to the end.
BTW, the Blade card game is fun. Quite often, I have easily gotten suckered into spending a good half hour at a time on it.

I caught onto that game pretty fast since it's similar to "Whis" from Tales of Eternia, although less complex. I'm a pretty good master of it, and It's made me more than a fortune. lol The only gripe I have is how long it takes to get back to the casino even with the warp spell. :/

Just finished this work of art. ;_; One of the best Falcom games I've ever played. It rules, IT RULES! I almost cried at the final boss battle and the credits sequence. I still can't believe Falcom didn't make more 3D Brandish games. Can't wait to play Brandish 2. Here you have two pictures from the ending that I made: TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, XSEEEEEEEEEEEEEED BTW, can somebody please tell me how can I record game footage from my PSP? I would like to upload some boss fights.

To record footage, the best bet is to get a video capture card like Dazzle( But probably something of better quality) and run it into your PC.

That is not necessary. Google for a little program called "RemoteJoyLite". With it you can record your gameplay. As for translating Brandish: I tried to convert a ITP with ITPCONV.EXE and translate the YES/NO choice (f.e. in the ITP/titleico.itp) but it seems the back-converted ITP is not what the game expects and it doesn't even show the menu. The tool can be found here: www.pokanchan.com/dokuwiki/software/itxcnv#itp_converterMaybe someone else can find the right settings and translate the ITP files The text in the SCP files is standard Japanese Shift-JIS (at the end of the files). I haven't tried to change something there but I assume one has to preserve the length of the file and the position of the picture variables like a_name1 or br1_tra to have a valid SCP.

I did some further tests with editing the ITP files. I tried to convert them with -v0, -v2, -v4, -v6 AND I changed the size in the DATA.LST - no luck yet. The menu is gone.

Currently continuing my Brandish marathon playing Brandish 2 SFC w/ Synchronicity's translation and it's super sweet.

Is anyone actually translating this yet. It seemed like naachan was going to. Now that we know the dialog text can be edited.

Is anyone actually translating this yet. It seemed like naachan was going to. Now that we know the dialog text can be edited. As I said before, I offered to translate it if someone can extract and re-insert the script. If someone sends me a spreadsheet or something with the extracted text and shows that they have the means to re-insert it after I translate it, I'd be glad to get to work on it immediately. I just don't want to deal with the hassle of, say, painstakingly going through everything with a hex editor and translating it that way. I'd get frustrated and quit very quickly that way.

So what we need most is a coder then, correct? That's half the battle, really. I'm doing what I can to find someone who may be willing to take on such a task, but so far I haven't had much luck with it.

A coder and someone able to understand file formats based on nothing, or good at psp debugging. There are pointers in the text files but I don't really see an easy pattern to them. And those pointers are going to need updated unless you want all the lines to be stuck with only as many bytes as they currently have. Also it seems that the comma "," is the line break. That may need to be taken care of with some hacking. Unless by coder you mean hacker as well.

That's what I had feared, Xalphenos. Now the issue is merely finding someone. As we already can easily get a translated text dump, thanks to the awesomeness of Naachan and a lot of the other talented members here.
Normally, one would think that would be enough to simply translate, adjust the text format and drop into the game with a few tweaks here and there these days, but sadly translation and patching has become really complicated as opposed to say... less complex, as I'm sure a lot of people had hoped for in the bygone era of SNES and before.
But I digress. I'll keep looking for a talented individual who can make this happen, but if per chance anyone happens to have the skills needed, or knows someone who does; it is encouraged that you please direct them to this thread. You all have my thanks for your help so far, and I still hope we can all get this done together!

I came here thinking I had done something new but reading the thread, apparently not? If you don't mind not being able to expand the amount of text, then, as mentioned before, it's a piece of cake to edit the script files and reinsert the text. You could definitely make a playable translation with those limitations, even if it's heavily simplified. Also you could just delete the japanese comma from the font (pretty sure it's stored as an image file) then just continue to use it for line breaks, too. [edit: I guess ITP file re-conversion doesn't really work either... so i dunno what to do about the commas then] does anyone know how to convert BMP to ITP files? i'm pretty sure i might be able to get them to work if I can just get them converted back
