Recently I ran through the original PC-8801 version of the first Ys game, having ran through the Chronicles+ version on PC some months ago and I was wondering how all the different versions compared.
I played a little of the MSX one (up until just before the fight with Jenocres) and it seems to largely be a downgraded port of the PC88 version with lower resolution and terrible screen scrolling. Don't know how the game compares difficulty wise. The other PC systems of the time I assume are similar to the MSX port in that they feel like somewhat downgraded PC88 ports but I haven't played any to know.
Consoles I've never tried the Famicom or Master System versions but having looked at them a little they seem like they had to be altered so much for the systems that they'd feel extremely different to actually play and not really at all reflective of how the PC88 version was.
PCE version seems like it's largely accurate to the PC88 version but with additions in presentation and the bosses slowed down and made much easier, though that impression is only based on seeing it being played. I assume Saturn is the same.
Sharp X8600 I know is meant to be extremely different in presentation and I assume feels a bit different in terms of gameplay but can't say first hand.
Then for Chronicles + obviously the visual presentation and responsiveness of controls is greatly improved over the original. The boss patterns, hit boxes and timings though are all slightly altered in ways that results in most bosses being easier than the PC88 version other than Dark Fact (who I find to be way harder in Chronicles) and arguably Vagullion who I think would probably be harder to attempt a no damage in the PC88, but overall a harder fight in the Chronicles version.
Was hoping that between the users here we could put together a decent list of the differences each version of the game has.
