Yes, I've played Ys II before (twice even) but I had managed to get to the first boss and could not get my Fire Rod to work... I thought one of the buttons on my gamepad wasn't working, so I went over all the keys on my keyboard, still no fire. I finally resorted to reading a walkthrough and found out that first you have to be granted the ability to use magic outside in the ruins by touching that statue. Whoops!
Anyone else ever make that mistake, or just me?
I ended up having to trek back outside, touch the statue, then head back down to the boss and set him ablaze.

Pretty sure I did this my first playthrough. Probably many others too, as I've seen the question come up fairly often.
You'd think you'd just be able to use magic naturally after picking up and equipping the Fire magic rod, but Falcom took it a step further for some reason. I mean it makes sense, but from a gameplay perspective it's a little non-sensical, IMO.

I don't think I've done that specifically in Ys II, but the Ys series have so many gated events like that, I know I've done it in one of my numerous playthroughs of other games in the series. Especially if it was rushing through Easy or Normal while I was trying to clear out all difficulties and especially if I was playing an untranslated game.
