Since the PSP is awesome for Falcom fans (and people in general), I'm making a thread about it. Here we can discuss various PSP-related matters, such as awesome stuff like Gurumin and custom firmwares and downgrading. And game recommendations. So! Anybody's got a recommendation?

Good timing, I was going to get round to ordering mine either today or tomorrow in preparation for Gurumin. Just doing some shopping around for prices and hoping I get one with usable firmware.
In the meantime, anyone here have the PSP Valkyrie Profile? Is it any good? I have the PS2 VP2 sitting around here waiting for me to get a better TV.

If you've played the PS1 ver. of Valkyrie Profile it's no different other than the CG cutscenes and Square Enix logo. *EDIT* In the case that you haven't played it, it's a unique game, I'd recommend it for a change of pace from a traditional RPG experience. And since I'm not too great with explanations I can only say that you'll have to play it to find out. Good game though.

The original Valkyrie Profile is one of my favorite games, and I did enjoy the port despite its flaws. It's still an awesome, unique game, but the port isn't the greatest - it's bogged down with slowdown and lots of menu-loading. If you play it off the memory stick then those problems disappear, but the port is disappointing nonetheless.
Overall, it's still a great game, and I highly recommend even the PSP port. Now if only I like the sequel as much...
EDIT: Just to add a few more recommendations of my own, I loved Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (as a pretty big Metal Gear fan, I even enjoyed both AC!D titles), and the Legend of Heroes ports are fun diversions, despite the terrible translations that the English releases got.

This is hot! A version 3.03 downgrader has been released just a couple of hours ago! You'll need an old, unpatched version of GTA Liberty City Stories in order to run it though. It is the version which contains a 2.0 upgrade on the UMD. Get it here!

So *that* is why I've seen older copies of GTA:LCS fetch some monies on eBay.
Anyone play Level 5's Jeanne d'Arc yet?

Yeah LCS has been exploited for a long time now. It allowed people to run homebrew on 2.82 and other previously non-downgradeable systems up until now. Now there's no reason to keep the 2.8 firmwares. Finally.

Haha, pretty much every PSP now can be downgraded and customized. Awesome.

Just ran the downgrader, it works. I was lucky enough to find an unpatched GTA: LCS at Gamestop.

Firmware 3.10 is coming out very soon! Don't upgrade! And I have no idea how to determine which is the old GTA version. The product number is different, but I don't know what it is.

I'm so glad I never updated my PSP from its original 1.5 (well, except for the recent hybrid homebrew ones).
Oh! I also recommend a couple of 2D sidescrollers for PSP - Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins, Megaman Powered Up and Megaman Maverick Hunter X - all fantasic games, all pretty cheap now, and all need more sales so we can get MMPU2 and MMMHX2! And Loco Roco is pretty fun too. I love my PSP (and my DS - handheld gaming is awesome!)

How can one tell if a copy of GTA:LCS is patched or not? The way I checked was by popping the game into my psp. If the firmware update included with the game is to ver. 2.0 you're good to go, if it's anything else it's a no go. You'll be able to check out what update version is included under the "Game" tab on the cross media bar without actually running the update, in case you were wondering.

Well, I didn't buy a copy of the game. I walked into Gamestop, asked if they had any used copies of the game, and asked to see them. The guy at the counter knew what I was up to and said it was cool so I just did the whole downgrade in the store.

You wanna play downloaded games in the future instead of buying them? That's cool, you can do it right here. In fact, I'll do it for you!" By the way, I believe most new PSPs are still delivered with firmware 2.71, and with that you can use the older, better downgrader.

By the way, I believe most new PSPs are still delivered with firmware 2.71, and with that you can use the older, better downgrader. I just went through the downgrading process myself, I bought a 1.5 PSP way back and I had to upgrade from 2.7 to 2.71 to do the downgrading, but the process was pretty painless! The PS emulation is working fine, but I've had some trouble ripping some of my games. Same goes with ripping my own UMDs with the homebrew software available now. I thought it'd minimize load times, but what it does is... not work. Ys VI for PSP would have been so much nicer if I had run it off of the memory stick. Still, my #1 reason for owning a PSP is so I can play Guilty Gear on the can. And now, with PS emulation, I can play my copy of Asuka 120% Final on the can too! If you guys like puzzles, and the idea of Lemmings + The Lost Vikings + Prince of Persia with a nice art style to tie it all together excites you, check out Exit.

I've never dumped a UMD myself, but you can easily download your games instead. Pretty much the same thing, I guess. I've never had a problem with converting PS1 games, what was the problem you encountered? Are you using a GUI? If so - which one?

Yeah, I know you can download PSP games pretty easily, but I got really fed up with the case of Exit. I own the US version, all my saves are for the US version... all the versions I could download were from other territories. I didn't try ripping my copy of that, but having GG Judgment and Slash on there would have been nice. What I ripped booted just fine, until I tried to choose a game, and then it crashed. Sad... I guess if I poke around long enough I might find that one, too.
As for the PS1 games, it wasn't a conversion issue, I just couldn't get my laptop to read SotN properly. I think it was reading the audio and the data seperately, and... long story short, I got the image from someone else and it worked! Whee.
Wish I had Jumping Flash 2 here.
