Now I'm curious, how did these titles play out originally? I didn't realize that the mechanics were altered during localization. What horror.

Pah. What nonsense. And, of course, much of the strength of story is lost thanks to the shit localization. Then again, I'm not really sure how good it could have been before, since bad localization aside, everything I've experienced so far (admittedly little) is BEYOND generic.

well the entire history of the Gagharv trilogy told very well in all the games and you can import the history of Tear of Vermillion into White Witch to get a broader view of the history of the world.

See, now I'm somewhat intrigued by White Witch. How does the third game, Song of the Ocean stack up?
I may just have to stomach my way through the first, then.
Did the US versions retain the data transfer from one game to the next that was supposedly featured in the JP PSP releases?

Well, thanks for the words. I don't think I can get beyond my memories of the first, and frankly, I've got tons and tons of better games to waste my time with anyway!

I haven't been able to load stuff into the Song of the Ocean, but maybe that's because I don't own the original for that, thanks to SONY cutting down my legal import channels never the less I found White Witch the best than Vermillion and Song of the Ocean worst, because the end of song of the ocean is really long and boring. just walking around a dungeon using the stones to open the doors and using combo spells to fight enemies, I have been in that area for at east four hours now and still haven't gotten to the end *yawn*.

I don't blame you, man. I've got a mountain of games to get through as well, and frankly, the Gagharv games on PSP in English are such dull shadows of what they once were that they're almost not worth playing. I really, really hate Bandai after seeing how they destroyed this once-monumental series. I hear ya. Especially considering that this represents almost all the exposure that US gamers got to the series. At least this millenium.

Is there a translation patch for the PC versions?

Now that I finally own a PSP, I went ahead and picked up the Gagharv Trilogy games in English. I've started in on A Tear of Vermillion.... and I can see where the so-called translation isn't much of one at all, which makes me cry. Still, I've made it survivable by attempting to mentally rearrange the script into something more coherent as I play. On the up side, they're still at least somewhat fun, and I can almost see how the characters were probably just all kinds of endearing and awesome before Bandai freakin' lobotomized them with the Babelfishy script. That sort of thing makes me worried if they ever decided to also port over the Sora no Kiseki PSP games.

The rumor mill suggests that Mastiff, the company that brought us Gurumin, has expressed interest in Sora no Kiseki... and they would be a much, MUCH better choice than Bandai. But so far, it's just a rumor. -Tom Wow, do you know how much that would rock?!?

IT WOULD ROCK MOUNTAINS. I've tried the PC game before but the amount of kanji and number of menus killed me.
Here's hoping the Mastiff folks will bring over some sweet Legend of Heroes! I could use some more PSP games!

Mastiff, huh? Which game would that be in the series? I'm not up on the JP names. And how would that one compare to the 3 already released on the PSP (LoH 1, 2, and 3)?

It's technically Legend of Heroes 6(part 1 I think?). As the other 3 released so far are: LOH 1=#4, LOH 2=#3, & LOH 3=#5. I really wish they would've just called them by their subtitles. I mean, what if for some strange reason, Hudson manages to release cd games on the Wii, won't Legend of Heroes Dragon Slayer confuse a few people? Or I'm just overly sensitive

Yeah, I know who Mastiff are. I think I even own TechnicBeat... it's somewhere around here. And I was thinking of the job they did with Falcom's Gurumin PSP port when I made that comment. Pretty damn sure that they'll do a better job than either Scamco or Bandai! ;p
Damnit, I really thought that the days of poorly-numbered series were over when the FF series got renumbered correctly...

Hey, I just recently bought a PSP which is an awesome device... I think I even like it more than my PS3 . Anyway, the reason I got it was the many JRPGs and other various genres, but with the overwhelming library of games, I wouldn't know where to start. Just looking for JRPG recommendations, what should I look into, or are there other games similar to Ys? Down the line I'll be getting FF Crisis Core, FF I/II/IV, Persona 2. Cheers,

This is going to sound bad coming from me, but these are honest recommendations. Half-Minute Hero would be right up your alley, I believe... and if you're a Final Fantasy fan, I think you'd also really enjoy Brave Story: New Traveler, and probably Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky as well. In addition, Falcom's Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure might give you a smidge of that Ys feel too. -Tom PROPAGANDA!!!!! PSP is great. Actually, in regards to Crisis Core, I think there is supposed to be a remasterd HD version coming to PS3. It's a great game, kinda wished I waited for the PS3 version, but, either way. I have Dungeon Seige Throne of Agony on the way, it's sounds like it's like Champions of Norrath, which I really enjoyed, though, that's totally a WRPG I'd say they play kinda like a slowed down Ys. There is more you can do with customizing & attacks etc. which, for me, makes up for it's...un-Ysness. But yeah, obviously the 3 Ys games, as well as Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky. I have to say I crave the second chapter of Trails! Gurumin is great as well as Wyrdy stated. There are other Legend of Heroes games on PSP, but.......mileage WILL vary! I enjoyed them even in there extreme...... flawededness(is that a word?). Get them cheap if you decide to get them. Personally, I enjoyed Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch, even if it was butchered. There's Star Ocean 1 & 2, Final Fantasy 1, 2, & 4, 3rd Birthday(though, not really an RPG, & some people don't like it), Breath of Fire 3(no US version, but the Euro version is in english), Lunar Silver Star Harmony(wish Game Arts would continue with the series dammit), PoPoLoCrois(an abridged version of the 1st & 2nd game I believe?), Suikoden 1 & 2(though there's no english version), Wild Arms XF(actually an SRPG). Or, to put it simply, here's the games I have for PSP: 3rd Birthday Activision Hits Remixed Atari Classics Evolved Bomberman Breath of Fire 3 Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded Capcom Classics Collection Remixed Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Daxter EA Replay Final Fantasy Final Fantasy 2 Final Fantasy 4 Gradius Collection Gurumin Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion Legend of Heroes 2: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch Legend of Heroes 3: Song of the Ocean Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky LocoRoco LocoRoco 2 Lunar: Silver Star Harmony Me & My Katamari Mega Man: Powered Up Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X Mercury Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Metal Gear Solid:Peace Walker Midway Arcade Treasures Namco Museum Battle Collection Parodius Portable Collection Platypus PoPoLoCrois Salamander Portable Collection Star Ocean: First Departure Star Ocean: 2nd Evolution Star Soldier Collection Steambot Chronicles Suikoden 1 & 2 Taito Legends Power-Up Twin Bee Portable Collection Wild Arms XF Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles Ys: Oath in Felghana Ys 6: The Ark of Napishtim Ys Seven

I need to add this to the list of things I recommended prior: MONSTER. HUNTER.(Freedom Unite) Such a brilliantly fun experience, especially in multiplayer! sorry for a 3 year bump but here is pic of my PSP collection being rebuilt Import Blaze Union. Seriously. Atlus is being stupid not releasing it, but it's worth it. Not only a worthy prequel, probably better as a whole. It's THE GAME that can make you feel like an asshole retroactively.

Awesome, thanks alot for the recommendations guys I've looked into them but I hate to sound very ignorant here but even though Gurumin sounds up my alley, it looks very... kiddish which kinda throws me off. Just like the Kingdom of Hearts series, I couldn't take the Disney characters seriously. Anyway, is Half-minute Hero made by the same developers as 3D Dot Game Heroes? They both have striking simularities, even the name reminds me of the PS3 game (Which is awesome)

Gurumin has a "manly" gameplay.
