I just got OiF. Ok, I've reviewed the threads, I've installed AppLocale, the latest game patch, switched to Japanese on regional settings, switched the non-unicode lang to japanese, and still this motherf#!*$@% refuses to run! Can anybody who has done this before throw me a bone here? This is seriously pissing me off. oh and also:
pardon my asking what is AppLocale? i did not need to do that on mine. all you need is to switch the region settings and unicode settings to japanese, the computer will ask if you would like to restart, once restarted it should work.

Applocale jumped out at me too. That is the only thing I see there that I have never used myself that could be the problem. Unfortunately I don't know much about Applocale, sorry. I'm currently using XP Home Edition also with Service Pack 2.
Sounds like you've done everything right, did the system prompt you to restart your computer for the settings to take effect?
Yeah, it did, and my computer's been restarted more times than a card castle on the florida coast. doesn't seem to do jack.

AppLocale is a microsoft tool I read about while sifting the threads for a clue. Apparently all it does is allow you to switch the non-unicode language without restarting. Someone said it helped so I DLd it.
Using AppLocale will work, but you shouldn't change your regional settings if you're going to use that.
Also, have you tried running the config program? Might be using something your video card doesn't support. Try clicking around with the boxes.
I've tried a couple of things on the config program, nothing seems to work. OK, 2 questions:
1. Do you have to have all those jap regional settings as you install the program? (I think I did but not sure)
2. Does anyone know what the settings are, or remember a specific setting they had to change in the config program?
Let me just say that I really appreciate everyone's help. That said, can somebody help me understand why I should not chuck this $87 coaster out the f#*!@ing window. I have done everything as it should be done, I have been patient, I have gratefully followed everyone's advice, but it simply won't work. It gives me the regretful news that the app has to close each time I open it. Surely I can't be the only one who had this problem, can anybody think of anything I might have missed? If not, it's pretty much skeet shooting time.
I'm sorry, you're right, it's just SO FRUSTRATING. It's the standard XP crash, with the message box that says "Sorry for the inconvenience . . . blah blah blah" then prompts you to send the report. I can't take much more of this.
agreed i just switch it over to the japanese settings and have never had a problem. have you tried that? simply do not use AppLocale at all. this is all i have ever done and every import game i have has worked.
I'm not using Japanese mode anymore (heck, I don't even have the East Asian language pack installed, as seen in my previous screencap). Applocale works great for me. Sure, I never really play Japanese games, but when I do -- I use Applocale. Much easier.
I don't like Japanese mode -- it messes up the computer, like NightWolve mentioned earlier.
Well, I tried each version of the patch, each seemingly as worthless as tits on a bore. There is something Im missing here, maybe I'm clicking a wrong box somewhere during installation or patching? I've basically just hit enter at each message box and let it do what it wants, that works with most programs. I'm about to say F it. Any last thoughts?
I know what it sounds like, but I don't have a lot I can report, like I said, it crashes instantly on running the exe, well right after the screen goes black for a second anyway. Nightwolve, you do have a tendency to sound like a prick sometimes, and I know its frustrating, but some people dont know as much about computers and software as I can tell you know, but hey, I'm not cluttering up your forum, so take it easy on me eh? And thanks for trying, I know you've got a lot on your plate right now, and I definately don't want to waste your time. Keep up the good work.
You mean drivers or actually getting a new one? I have an ATI with 128 VRAM, which aint a lot these days, but it runs Age of Empires III without a hitch, if you mean drivers, well I'm checking to see if there are any new ones right now. Thanks for the input!
hi yea i meant the drivers on your graphcs card. maybe because it is a older card it cannot play the game on the higher settings, try updating and running the game on the lowest setings, if it works try messing around with the settings some more, slighty tweak it upwards to see what the most you can get out of the game is.
Ok, I did some stuff, namely getting a new driver from microsoft update, reinstalled windows and started all over. I still get that message before I even install the program, but I now get the program to run without crashing, the problem is I get a black screen and a cursor. The cursor changes to keyboard input and the little mouseover button finger thingy depending on where I move it on the screen. I suspect that, because of the keyboard input area it might be the setup screen where you type in the serial number or something. But the screen is black like i said. Also, the window that pops up on the autoplay from the disc does not have a "Play" button, as I suspect it should if the installation were complete. Does anyone have a suggestion? Again thanks to everyone who helped me this far, I TRUELY appreciate it. And Nightwolve, sorry, I probably overreacted to a couple of things you said. I hope we're still cool.
