The game does not use serial numbers and there is no "Play" button on the autostart menu. None of Falcom's games has one.
Did you update your graphics card drivers after reinstalling Windows?

yes, i installed the latest graphics driver from microsoft, and if it makes a difference, Ys I & II Complete work perfectly. So I guess the language issue becomes less likely the suspect. So if there is no inputting of serial numbers, what would the input curser be for? For that matter, what screen is it supposed to be and why is it doing that? I want to play darn it. Everybody else already finished it on nightmare 15 times and here I am helpless to enjoy its wonders at all.

From Microsoft? What graphics card do you have?
Input box? When installing? It might be the directory where the game will install.

My card is an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB DDR memory. And like I said, that message comes up before I install the game, so there shouldn't be a game directory at that point, it doesn't make sense. It installs to the following path: C:\FALCOM\YSF_WIN My Ys Complete are in the same FALCOM folder. The location shouldn't be a problem unless a specific file is missing. The files in YSF_WIN are: Does this look right?

That's how mine looks. Those are the same files in my Ysf as well. I don't have any patches installed. Forgive my ignorance I don't know how to save images like how you did yours so I just took a picture of mine. Maybe this can help isolate the problem. Mine are in the same drive, same location, same Falcom folder. Don't give up! We will get you running soon!

Hey thanks GMF, btw, its easy, just hit Alt+Print Screen on your keyboard and it will save an image of the frontmost window to your clipboard. Just Print Screen will save one of your entire screen. Did you run the config.exe utility to lower the graphics settings like we said? I didn't see you confirm that you tried that already. . . . Anyway, I wanna know what results you get when you lower the graphics setting and/or put the thing in windowed mode. Yeah, I did try that, tried it on every setting including the lowest one, and did that with each version of the patch, I just get that black screen with the cursor at different resolutions. The config program seems to work just fine, so I don't know, maybe its time for a new video card?

I'm an ATI man myself, although this whole ordeal is making a case for nVidia. I've never had a problem with any other game tho. I hate to throw money at an AGP video card that could go toward a new computer also. What a dilemma. I still think that something is going wrong during installation, I need a Japanese person in my house.

Thats a good idea. Oh and if youre looking for computer components, check www.newegg.com , if you haven't already, it's great. I think I will take your advice, I will install from scratch one more time and document it completely. If that doesn't reveal the problem, then I guess it's time to shop.

ummm I doubt it's the graphics card...
as I (sadly) recall, I finished YsF on my 9200 before I got my X800... and the 9200 was running it on medium settings with pretty much no problems.
and let me tell you, the 9200 is GARBAGE lol

If anyone was curious, I got it working! I reformatted my hard drive, reinstalled windows and reinstalled the game, I am using an older driver and I think that might be why it works, I don't know. But just so everyone doesn't go to bed thinking, "Trying to help 2X4 sure was a waste of time!" Thanks so much to everybody for your help, I owe you. Now if we can just get Nightwolve to release his patch so I can play the damn thing
