I've been thinking about purchasing the Ys anime as of late and I can't seem to figure out which DVD I should be buying first. At Amazon they have the DVD complete series, Book One DVD, and some 4 episode DVD that apparently happens after Adol collects some of the books of Ys. Obviously the last item isn't the begining, but I wasn't sure if there was more than one series or not. Any help would be appreciated. I really just need to get pointed in the right direction so I can get started.

Just get this. It has all eleven eps of the whole series. Cheap, too. Wow, thanks a lot Deuce! That was one of the items I was browsing through, and I wanted to be 110% sure before I threw any money that direction. It really is a great price for an entire set, especially for an anime box set.

i wont get started on trashing the series today. No, actually, I'd like to hear any and all comments about the series. If it's terrible I don't want to shell out the money for it, even though I probably will anyways, but I always like to get the heads up before I buy. Why don't you like it? Is it the story, animation, voice actors, or something completely different?

Actually, the only thing that got my extra attention are Adol's blue eyes in the anime (in games they're black). I guess you're right on that point. Even Falcom's official site translated, describes Adol as the red haired, dark eyed hero of the series. I'm sure the potrayal of his as a hero can't be as bad as the weird plastic looking Adol that's at the begining of the US version of Ys VI. He creeps me out in that plastic-doll, Everquest II kind of way, you know what I mean? Anways, back on topic. I'm glad that you both gave the anime good reviews, because that's exactly what I needed to hear firsthand. Too many times an anime can be just plain awful if done incorrectly. For example, the Vionlist of Hamln manga portrayed the main protaganist as a selfish goofball. In the anime, he is portrayed as a somewhat helpful character that is angry all the time. There is so much angst in the anime that it completely goes away from the original design. Then again, I'm comparing apples to oranges when talking about manga/anime differences, and game/anime differences. Either way, thanks for the info.

I like the anime too, I have Book one,Book two and Castle in the Heavens .. I think that's all of them .. anyway .. if you like old school anime you'll love it. I must admit it was a bit cheesy, but not so cheesy as to ruin it. I did like Castle in the Heaven better as it was more "modern" looking but didn't really diminish the feel of the world. It wasn't perfect, but when do we ever get that? At anyrate, you won't regret buying it.
OK, I'm going to be a little critical and this was my only real problem and why I said it was cheesy, was that Adol sounded like a whiny spoiled brat when he shouldn't be, but if you watch it with subtitles you won't notice. Now, I know more Greek than I do Japanese, so I can't be a judge of the Japanese acting. But if you let your willing suspension of bad acting(or at least not very good acting) then you will enjoy the dub(as I did, and I'm not much a fan of subtitles.)

I actually liked the set, but of course I enjoyed the Ys II portion more despite the liberties it takes with the story. The Ys I portion seemed to have a pacing problem that the Ys II portion gladly resolved.
There's nothing wrong with the dub except for the fact that the music isn't 'right'. I couldn't get over how the music was different between the original and the dub as it stood out too much for me (even if I do understand why they did it technically). Alright, maybe the fact that some of the names are different from what the subtitles AND credits said got me, too.

I finally found the set for $13.99 used at a Hastings today. The packaging, discs, and everything else are in great condition, and it was $11 cheaper than the new version. I've only watched a couple of episodes as of right now, but it looks promising. Either way, worth owning the entire thing for less than $15.
