Does anyone else think the anime would have been better without orcmen and necrolyzation and gone on with the mafia style from the beginning to the end? IMO, the superhuman duels were disappointing. I would have been happier to see Brandon falling into coma instead of dying, miraculously waking up some time after Maria died, and then going up against the organization. Also, Ballibard Lee and Bob should have been eliminated in mafia style (like Harry did with his enemies in the first part of anime) instead of silly superhuman fighting. Lee and Bob were quite well developed that it actually aggravated me to watch them die in superhuman fights, which doesn't involve their true skills (Bob - intelligence and info, Lee - political influence and manipulation). Only Bear and Bunji should have been dealt with clean one-on-one duels. But don't get me wrong. I was truly impressed by the anime's drama and more focus on characterization than fighting...Just make one way (kick-ass action) or the other (drama + real mafia action)!

Bumping an ancient thread, I know, buuuuut...
Did you ever play the game this was based on? It'd answer a lot of your questions about why they did things the way they did. At the same time, the game left a lot of questions about the characters and how they knew each other, as it was released long before the anime was. The two are great companion pieces to each other. The last segments of the anime series (everything following Brandon's death) are a retelling of the game's storyline, though their endings are very, very different.
If you liked the series, though, I suggest you check out the game and its sequel, Gungrave Overdose. There's also an excellent Gungrave art book/fan book available in English now, Gungrave Archives. Quite affordable at $20, and it's packed with cool stuff.
