Hi my name is Mikegeneral of the Ultramarines chapter. I'm a new user to these forums, but none the less I am no newb . I made this new post tell you all what has haunted me for four years of WTF's of anime moments and that my friends is evangelion. First I would like to point out that it is not the best anime or #1 of anything in the media. In fact I think it is the worse piece of $%!^ anime I have ever seen. Not only did I not learn anything (which most shows would) but the whole plot and base of action was all bulloney. Its like after watching the show I was like wtf and had thousands of questions to ask when I thought the big movie was all my answers and guess what....It didn't answer a damn thing. It was just more wtfs and questions. Its like why would you have eve( or lilith) be inside a giant fortress in the middle of town so that the people could get slaughtered before the good guys got their heads out of their asses and started saving the day finally in the end of each episode? Why tokyo? Why 14-year-old kids? Why did we all turn into Jell-o. What does this have to do anything with Angels or The bible? How did we get the huge robots? I just want to point this out cause everyone in magazines and Tv said so. If it is so good then why is halve the movie is just Bla bla bla and a girl blowing her noes on the crapper. To those poor fools who actually like this is either, 1.Their dumb...or 2.The deny that they wasted hundred of dollars on the movie and show which was twice more than it actually worth. Now here is a good list of good Hones, hard worked and plotted animes, only ten! 1Hayao Miyazaki movies(all of them) 2Outlaw star 3Slayers(funny) 4Gun blade 5 7 samurai 6 Full metal panic 7 Robotech( there wouldn't be animes in U.S. without.) 8 Vampire Hunter D bloodlust 9 Blood Plus 10 Heroic age. Yeah thats a lot better than piece of crap Evangelion. Do you agree?

You listed some good series, but none of them I find better or worse then Eva.
Obviously there is a larger percentage of people in the world who like the series, as it is still to date selling large quantities of merchandise. Also due to its popularity they are redoing the series in a 4 part movie series, touched up art and tweaked story in an attempt to help it flow better for those not familiar with it.
Where there more questions then answers? Definitely. Was it crap? No. Was it one of the early titles that helped steam the way for what is now on our shelves? Yes.

Hmm, maybe I got a little carried away with the hammering of people who liked the series. I just needed to get it off my chess. Sorry about that guys, I just thought it could have been better at some parts and explained more in certain area of the show. All my friends and family hated it and I guess I couldn't blame them cause we were all phsyked in watching it and when it was all finally over we were all disappointed and distraught. I just personally didn't like is all. SORRY, I think I just pissed off a bunch of people. Last time I'm making post. (Is Xenogears one of the episodes of Xenosaga....Just curious)

Most, if not all of us, hate Shinji. And the questions raised in the series were answered only by more questions in the movie ending.
Oh and everything does get answered - problem is, like wyrdwad said, that the show is best enjoyed by the type of audience who are willing to decipher these things.
As amazing as it may seem, there are more than enough of those audience to make Evangelion one of the industry's biggest cash cows!
And it all comes to this - anime is a business, and when a certain show sells, the industry's gotta make the most of it - hence the countless Eva rip-offs (although the show was actually inspired from Space Runaway Ideon)^^
.... .... .... ....
DAMN LOLIS AND I'M FUCKIN TIRED OF BISHIES AND BOOBIES AND PANTY SHOTS!!

I can understand how you feel, michael. I often want to just ask the world "is everyone really so stupid or am I the stupid one?!" but I've managed to keep restrained for the past few years... although the question does seem to come up more often than it did before.
I haven't seen Evangalion, but I wouldn't say it's the most popular or even touted as the best. Almost everyone I see talking about Anime brings up whatever is currently popular (DBZ, Naruto, Gundam, etc). But I'd say generally people's favorites are either Evangalion, Akira, GitS, or something from Miyazaki... more often it's Miyazaki, though. Look at IMDB's rankings, Miyazaki films are basically the only anime films that make it into the top 250 movies.
I don't really have a favorite Anime film or series. As far as series go there's just the ones I've been able to bear watching all the way through, like Wolf's Rain and Noir... but I did really like them a lot too. The only series I'm really interested in seeing now is GitS:SAC and also Tekkaman Blade because it was basically the first anime I watched as a kid and I remember loving it so I want to revisit it. Can't find the time though. As far as films go, it's really more about what interest me than anything else. I've seen Akira and just found it OK... I can't understand why it's so highly regarded either. I can see why Miyazaki is so big around the world, but I haven't personally really liked any of his films either. GitS is probably the anime film I've most liked from the big ones that I've seen, but even that didn't exactly make me a fan. Strangely, Zone of the Enders Idolo and Street Fighter II are the anime films that come to my mind when I think of what my favorite is. I know they're not as well made, but...
Best thing I've gotten from Anime is the music. That's what I care for the most. For some reason, I can't stop listening to Making of a Cyborg... I actually have been listening to it long before I watched GitS and I'm still listening to it. There can be a lot of inspiring music in anime (mostly thanks to Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura).

The part I really didn't like from the movie was when shinji turned into a god I think and turned all of us into Tang. Well putting that aside I don't really have a favorite anime either cause over the years of watching the shows its very hard to choose from or tell which one is the best. When I was a kid I hated animes cause I thought they were just scary, violent, pornos. Now these days I can't get a enough of anime and after watching gundam wing on toonami made me want to watch more. Right now I am currently watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Legann.

Ah Gurren Lagann. To me it's the oasis in the desert of 2007 anime ^^ Well this year is gonna be more epic with a continuation of Code Geass, plus the new Macross Frontier TV series XD Anyway, have you heard of the Evangelion remake? The first film (out of 4) just recently got out, got cammed , and fansubbed. I've seen it, and interestingly enough, they seem be addressing the "issues" of the TV series. I noticed that they took out a huge chunk of scenes that made the show drag. And some scenes that were supposedly or originally quiet have monologues or voice-overs that are written in a way that they are sufficient replacements to a huge chunk of other scenes. The movie remake gets to the point as much and as frequent as it can. With all those times save, they got more than enough to make an epic final showdown. Yep - a reimagined battle scene against a certain Angel where Shinji grew some balls. What's even more interesting was that while the story started out nearly identical to the TV series, the last 1/3 seems to be telling us that it's going to take a different direction. As a small hint, there's a certain scene that I think retcons End of Evangelion! This is also kinda confirmed when you watch past the end credits where they show a "Next Episode preview" That mech is not Jehuty.... Going back a bit to Gurren Lagann, the first 5-6 episodes were kinda boring to me. Heck Episode 4 became controversial for being so stupid that 2 people got fired from the staff! Survive those episodes, and you'll soon realize that the show is pure concentrated testosterone.

Alright, today during work I just remembered that there is actually worse animes to me than eva, like Air, Violinist of Hamel, macross 7, Gundam V and G. Air was just another anime that depresses the hell out of the viewer to the point of watching something happy and gay afterwards of dying little girls. Violinist of Hamel the show sucked and wasn't funny like the manga, game, movie which was (^$%^W#%@& hilarious, It was also had poor animation. Macross 7 had some good part of showing some memorable characters from robotech but after watching the dumb bastard sing for 55 episodes was annoying. Gundam V had some cool moment but lacked a good plot unlike the other series. Yeah V gundam could grow wings but who gives a $%!*. G gundam was just plain racist with other country where japan had the only cool gundam and everyone else had windmills and elephants gundams. The Mexico colony is a giant sombrero and their gundam is called tequila gundam wearing a poncho and sombrero. Yeah guys thats really racist,(yet kinda funny). The plot was stupid in using giant expensive robots fighting each other from different colonies claiming the right of earth. How about having a giant boxing match which could save lives and money. Well I think Gurren Lagann is a funny show so far and I am going to finish it none the less. I really want to watch the girl who travels through time. My friend and brother said it was the best anime movie they've every seen.

Oh I was just exaggerating on how much I love Gurren Lagann (hyperbole?)^^ To me, it's the REAL Gunbuster sequel^^ Plus Kamina's glasses has pretty much become a modern icon for hot-blooded characters (just go to the mecha thread in 4chan to see what I mean^^).
I've already seen Girl Who Leapt Through Time.... TWICE. It was a good effort at mimicking a Ghibli flick.
Interesting that you mentioned Violinist of Hamelin as it had a reversed effect on me. I've seen the anime first and loved how depressing it was (rivaling Berserk!), although I HATE the ending so much. I've started reading the manga afterwards and found it too be too different. It's a fun manga.... just need time to adjust XD

I looked at the shows you recommended, but wasn't really fond of the art. Eh looks too dark and grim for me without the "out of this world" adventures and action which I like. Oh and do you use to have the channel AZN. Just wondering cause they replaced my channel here with MTV2 which really pissed me off cause they used to show some cool movies and animes on tuesdays. They used to have Tenchi, Project A-ko, Lodoss war, and a bunch of other cool asian shows before they switched it. PISSED ME OFF. Earlier I was playing Popful Mail for Sega Cd and found it quite good for its time. Right now I'm downloading sorcerer stabber Orphen and wondering is it good?

I highly recommend checking out the works of Satoshi Kon. IMHO, he's the best writer/director in all of Japanese film, easily topping even Miyazaki. Satoshi Kon. Also the director of Perfect Blue.

I watched the first half of Perfect Blue on the SCI-fi (WTH!) channel and it didn't do much for me. Eh, I'll watch Orphen anyways after watching the other shows my friend burned for me. Doesn't look that bad. My brother played the ps2 game of orphen. It sucked but the show might be funny. Oniisama E Looks like something from Black Jack. I like black jack.

The anime adaption of Oniisama E was done by the same people who did the Black Jack OVAs (directed by Osamu Dezaki and character designs by Akio Sugino).
So yeah it is like Black Jack.
Same goes for Rose of Versailles.
But they're both really dark and fucked up. Oniisama E was actually cancelled and banned in some countries because it went a little overboard by the middle! And Rose of Versailles was also depressing as hell.
And I love 'em^^

Wow, your user name doesn't dark taste in anime haven . Someday near the future I'm going to watch all of black jack since AZN channel is now gone. The art is very interesting in the shows you recommended.

I'm just not into the stiff expressions common with how modern anime is drawn. That plus I noticed most of them can't draw hands.... TAKE LIFE DRAWING DAMMIT!
I go for the shows that take advantage of the expressiveness of iconic character designs and treat every shot as a well thought out composition.
Look at His and her Circumstances for example. The studio's limited budget forced them to use so many stills that the show is pretty much an image slideshow. But since every shot wasn't wasted and well composed (well the show does waste time on recaps and flashbacks but that's a different issue), it not only succeeds in supporting the dialogue, but also creates that visual drama that the script cannot convey.
Studio Ghibli and Gainax both seem to be good at that technique. Very obvious in Ghibli's Ocean Waves and Whisper of the Heart, and every Gainax title since..... well since they put out Wings of Honneamise.
This is also the reason why I'm having trouble watching Gundam 00. Gundam 00 IMHO is one of the better examples of a show lacking in visual composition.
"hey our visual composition suck!" "shake the camera!" "yay!"
Funny how there was a topic about Gundam 00's visual composition in 4chan last night^^
