Hmmm, I've never really looked at animes like that. Very interesting that you point that out haven. Now I know which anime is made well or not. Gundam 00 looked very interesting and watched some episodes and looked very good. Its better than the cry baby pilots from seed.

I don't really mind mechs a lot as long as they are realistic (even though they're probably never going to exist). I don't like the animes where the mechs are used like in power rangers where you have to combine with other with dinosuar robots. I also don't like the idea where they are ridiculously huge which would make them easy targets for every type of military units to fire at...I would recommend at least 12 feat tall mechs (or armor) for infiltration missions and more speed. Also you really don't need legs in outer space and ammo should only travel so far in outer space. Also they shouldn't be too invincible cause I don't think anything could block the most advanced weapons of 21st century, especially with laser cannons. That seems to be it which makes the most mech animes that reaches these expectations slim.

Giant robots can't exist at all because they are impractical and inefficient.
They are huge and bulky, too complicated to construct, not to mention too expensive. You're asking to build something that's 10 to 50 (or higher) tall with parts that have intricacies of a human body just to what? Do what a crane could do.
It just doesn't work.... in REAL LIFE.
The thing is, anime and manga creators are just that - anime and manga creators.
They are not architects of hi-tech military weaponry. But they need to have the talent and skill to make the audience get immersed in the "reality" that they fabricate on their drawn pictures.
That's why rainbow colored mechs, transformers, and combiners seem cool and badass in the context of shows like Gurren Lagann or Mazinkaiser or even Super Sentai (WTF so you get stronger by sticking your ships together!?).
The real robot genre (e.g. Gundam), on the other hand, is just a form of innovation to the super robot genre that was played for a about decade back in the 70s - injecting elements of realism and maturity to a genre that's otherwise mostly aimed at little kids.
On the marketing side of things, giant robots just fucking sell like hotcakes. You cannot get rid of a multi-million dollar cash cow by simply saying "giant robots don't work!". Anime and manga is a business - and these "losers" sure make more money than the average anime basher.
Now on the creator/developer side of things, they know what to do - take advantage of things that sell. Some hope to be "creative" and "original" but in reality, once their title is put up on the store shelves (if they're that good), they're title would be competing against other titles whether they like it or not. They could bring some original elements, that is their own artistic touch, but they must also include elements that will make them and their work profitable to the company they are working for.
Giant robots is one of those elements - of course there's also loli, bishies, fanservice, emo characters, Matrix fight scenes - the list goes on.
Going back to giant robots - they don't work, but they sell. And the fans love 'em.

What I think would be a good idea if we had soldiers wearing mech armor that shoots exploding rounds and wear armor that almost impenetrable, like space marines well you know without the genetic emperor crap.( sorry if I brought up something from warhammer, I just like the story line and plot) or like Samus Aran in her power suit from metroid . I like Gurren Lagann cause it's kinda ripping on Mechas, except to the anime its called Mecchi cause of the have naked ladies in it. Jenova to me was an easy boss and doesn't really require any strategy to kill the monster so unless the player completely sucks at final fantasy the boss is pretty easy, so cloud and the whole gang could just have to Wsummon roundknights, mime it and final attack pheonix to anything else similar to jenova. Heres a cool amv of my favorite types of mechs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5_HjL2u_yg
