I need help here! How the heck do you beat Vagullion in Ys 1? He is a pain! I do all the running around stuff and he still seem to get my energy down before his. I'm at full level with experience. So don anyone here have any better ways? This is a shame that I must resort to asking for help when I'm usally good at figuring out bosses in RPGs. This boss is so cheap! Alomost impossible to beat fairly! I've search the net and only found the round around the screen tip! Though Vagullion scatters the screen in different ways. I had wonder what would happen if you had no lights on you? Would the bats know where your at? it would been nice if it was some easier trick here. Thanks guys! Legendarygamer

First of all, you desperately need to be both at level ten and have all the silver equipment. That means you need to get the sword as well. To do that, you'll need to screw with the Roda Trees. Eat the seed you find in the caverns, then go talk with the two trees. You'll have to go back and forth between the two, I believe. And if memory serves, you speak with the one in the north first.
As for strategies, the best way I've been able to approach it is to wait in a corner when Vaggy is in pieces. When the bats come really close to you, make a mad dash around the bend and around the bat cluster. Sometimes, the bats will ALL converge really quickly. That's when you know that he's reforming. Don't run too far away or you won't be able to stab him where it don't grow back.
This is probably the strategy you already heard of, and sad to say there's no better way of doing it. Vaggy can be annoying to kill, so don't worry if you're having problems. Everyone else did as well.

Oh wow. I remember when I finished Vagullion the first time (a LOOOONG time ago) on Sega Master System... I almost cried. I had tried so hard and I actually did it. That is probably the most memorable gaming experience of my life.

Thanks guys! I have the Silver before every getting the seed. I was going to do the seed thing after defeating Vagullion! I just can't belive that thier is a boss that is that much a pain! The killer part is the guy seems to take more than you take off him leaving you to die first! So my plan is to be able to hold off my energy long enough til I can get Vagullion atleast half dead! It's just a pain that at times the bats spread the screen leaving you no way to run around them so you have no choice but to still get hit. This crap comes in play when you have him halfway down in energy! So I will try guys and let you know when he is defeated. Thanks! LegendaryGamer

You know, I actually found that it's a best to stay somewhat closer to the bats. I know it sounds crazy, but it seems to get them to cluster together faster and allow you to actually run around them all instead of getting hit by the stragglers that don't play with the other bats. You have to be fairly exact in order to get this to work.
Also, he may be hard, but their is a harder one to me. Anyways, I think that you'll have a serious sense of accomplishment by defeating him. I found him harder than in any of the other incarnations that I've played.
Good Luck Jest

Thanks guys! He's defeated! I found him to be very easy if you have the silver sword. He's like a kitten! LOL. I had the silver shield, and armor but not the sword at first! So I thank you all! Now my new problem is Dark fact! Now he's the hardest thing ever! Mann!

Try to hit him around the edges of the platform, rather than in the middle of it. Also, try to run "along" with him, that'll harm him greatly.

Thanks Seldane! The running along with Dark fact worked! He's defeated and I'm now on to Ys 2. Nightwolve and team done wonders for the game with the patch!
Having it in english makes a difference! I would of had to find a walkthrough to just get through the whole game. As a Action RPG fan you using too much help talks away from the adventure!
Thanks again everyone here!

Out of curiosity, are you playing on Normal, Hard, or Nightmare mode? I can attest that Vagullion was not a kitten in Nightmare mode (the only mode I played). Then again, maybe I'm just not as good as I'd like to think I am.
Anyways, good job on beating the game. I think that you'll find Ys II to be much easier and it's definitely the best of the series in my opinion.
Peace Out Jest

He was hard when I did not have the Silver Sword! Though when I had it he was easy. Just ran around and strike him and in a couple of minutes he was toast! Thanks you all of your help that is! LOL! I too agree that Ys 2 seem to look the best! Also for some reason my control pad rumble features works on Ys 2 than Ys 1, strange? I love the graphics also! The music is very nice. I have patched it with the remaster version. Again thanks! legendaryGamer

IMHO, he was a cinch, even on Nightmare, on Eternal / Complete. But when it comes to the TGCD, SMS, etc. , GOOD GOD I HATE DEALING WITH HIM!!!

Vagullion was horrible for me, on normal mode in Ys I Complete. Took me like thirty and a half tries. ;_;
Dark Fact was also pretty hard. But, I dunno, it seems there more of a feng shui to learning him, Vagullion was more like luck to me. Still, I can often take out Fact in a couple tries now. Vagullion takes forever.
I hope Guruda eats him! >=(

I just finished the boss a week ago and it took me a good solid hour. Thanks to my coming back from Kobe and finishing the book I started I had some time. Every time I attacked him it knocked a VERY VERY VERY small amount off. it takes a long time. Just be patient and start the boss when you have at least 2 hours open.

ok, so i got to the entrance for vagullion then realised he was way too powerful after dying a few times. leveled up to 10 coz i was doing basically no damage to him. then tried again, can only do a tiny bit damage, went and bought a talwarl on the way back i thought id check out what the roda seed was for since the guy in the pub didnt take it. using my intuition i just thought id go to the tree (the north one) ate it spoke to it, nothing happened and i left for the mines thinking i just wasted the seed and it might come in useful later.
then i read about the silver sword coz i got frustrated with vagullion and ive spoken to both trees but i ate the seed ages ago now many saves since. will it still work? or am i doomed with the ask of beating vagullion with a talwarl. i went to the one east of minea first, does the order make a difference/

If I recall correctly, there are two Roda Trees; one on the north-western corner, and one hidden in the south-eastern corner of the world map. Eating the Roda Nut will still allow you to talk to them, no matter how long ago it was -- infact, you can't talk to them unless you eat it, and you can talk to them as much as you'd like!
// You should probably return the Silver Harmonica to Reah yet, if you haven't. If I remember correctly, that is crucial to awakening the trees.

That's correct, you need to give the Silver Harmonica to Lair, and she plays a song to awaken the Roda Trees. You can talk to the before doing this, but you won't get the full dialogue, or the Silver Sword.
Personally I think Vagullion is a kitten in Eternal compare to the old versions. In the 8-bit versions the bats don't even completely cluster up, so it's often impossible to avoid damage, even with save states. Plus some other versions, like the Turbo Duo has specific spots that you need to him in, or he will damage you instead. Which I really hate since the window to hit is so small already.

Unsavory's right. Also, the sword's with the south-eastern tree. And you have to get it, since it's pretty much impossible to beat Dark Fact without it.

You can still beat Dark Fact, but he probably takes twice as much damage. Just out of curiosity has anyone skipped the Silver Sword from the Roda Tree? I'm wondering if it still appears in the chest in Darm Tower. Maybe that is why Vagullion is so hard without they, they don't want you to skip it.

I found that a good strategy for Vagullion in COMPLETE is when the bats first disperse and spread out, create some distance so when they start progressing towards you, they will slowly start to cluster together leaving you more of a window to run aorund them.
Another thing I noticed is that Vagullion has certain spots he likes to materialize in. In my endeavors, he almost always appeared in the upper and lower right corners of the stage. So lure the bat cluster towards this area and they will materialize soon enough.
While dodging the bats, I find that running in a square as opposed to circling around them is more reliable as they can't seem to make sharp turns reliably.
Also he has a limited window to hit him. You have until he opens up his wings to strike or you blew it. This is roughly about a half second timeframe, so you need to be close to the cluster when they form the main body.
Basically follow the above steps and you should comfortably kill him with about half your health intact. (You're guaranteed to take a few shots because of straggling bats)
This is only the COMPLETE version though, every Vagullion version follows slightly different AI patterns that drastically alter the course of the battle. I think the NES version was the most annoying. :\

While it is possible to beat Vagullion without the Silver Sword (on Easy, it takes 64 hits, Nightmare would be 128, I think - unsure about Normal and Hard), the game won't let you enter Darm Tower without having obtained all of the Silver equipment, at least in the Complete version.
