The mine can be a pain, what with the limited vision. Particularly the second floor.
But yeah, I was able to wander my way through it, too.

Certain emulators have the ability to turn off layers of graphics. Not sure which version you are playing, but it's something to look into. You can remove the black that way. If not, I always remembers 3-3-2 in the Mines. That's the number of items in each area.
