Well.. I've played Ys V for a while now...
At first, I was pleasantly surprised. The intro sequence was in the same style as Ys IV, but it didn't feel quite as cheap. The music was good too.
Main menu -- my first move was to adjust the screen (which was not possible in the previous games -- at least not that I can remember).
Second move -- import my Ys III / Ys IV save files. I want the unlockables.
New game. People are talking near the ship, just like in the original game. I am not listening to the (horrid) voice acting, I'm just mashing the buttons. I want action!
Now I can walk around in Xandria town. New music. Instead of the rather sad tune that was present in the original game, this game uses a completely new tune. A much happier one. It is okay, but nothing special.
The plot seems to be the same. Walk into the bar, talk. Go to the castle, etc.
You can't leave town until you've bought some equipment. I did that. Exited Xandria.
Field. The game now begins for real. This was a fairly nice surprise.... The graphics are about the same. Slightly improved, it looks pretty nice. I like the trees, each individual leaf can be seen, rather than a green mess.
The action is improved. You can take out your shield (much like in the Game Boy Zelda games). You can also use magic. I tried healing and firebolt magic. Pretty nice. They also removed that awful 3-attack-buttons-system. Now there's only one attack button. If you jump and attack at the same time, you can do a jump-spin attack much like in YsVI. Pretty nice.
The enemies look the same. Poorly animated sprites. Adol is also "sliding" when he's walking just like in Ys IV. It feels very awkward.
The level design is a little better -- and there aren't quite as many "invisible walls", but they are present.. unfortunately.
They also put more detail into the enviroments, I like that.
The game is better than Ys IV, no doubt about it -- but it is still a bad game. It gets boring pretty fast, and the game feels very confusing just like Ys IV did.
I'm also stuck. I have no idea what to do after exiting town. I've litteraly been everywhere possible. There are two houses that are impossible to enter, and one large arena gate (which refuses to open). It is obvious that this is where you'll fight that bull. Having played the original Ys V really helps.
Wow, this is all rambling .. well, I hope you've enjoyed reading it. More impressions later when I've played more... If I ever do, that is. Wasn't much fun, unfortunately.
