Does anybody know if there is any progress in the translation of this game? It's been stalled for years! That's the only Ys game I haven't played (apart for some minutes) and I don't wanna play the Taito remake (specially since I don't have a PS2.) Anyway, I'd really like to play the original and understand what's going on.

As Deuce said in this topic: Regarding the translation of Ys V for Super Famicom: No progress has been made. This is not because of anything going on with me, but rather that Gideon Zhi's life has become rather busy, too, and I have yet to receive any script files to work on. I am still interested in translating the game, but this is one area in which I am at the mercy of the hacker's schedule. When and if progress is made, I will let everyone know. This is a fantastic game and is highly playable even though you don't understand what's going on. I definitely recommend giving it a shot, the gameplay's great.

I think if you work with the walkthroughs on gamefaqs you will not only enjoy the game, but have a good idea of what's going on. I am very fond of the ability to use the shield in Ys V too.

I played as far as the first boss so far but I still didn't get the hang of using the shield very well. In the regular version it doesn't seem very necessary anyway. My biggest problem so far is that my amount of gold is not increasing, so I can't really buy much. But it's a really fun game, yes. I wish I had any hacking skills so I could do it myself.

The shield is useless--I've never used it myself. You know all those gems you get from the monsters? You exchange those for gold!
Go to a shop and select the third option on the menu in order to sell your gems.

Aha! I knew those obscure options in the shops had to be usefull for something. Thanks Seldane, now I'll be able to get further in the game. I only have to figure out how the magic system works now. Guess I'll have to read a walkthrought after all.
