I downloaded some the the new Ys VI PS2 gameplay videos from Gamespot. Ever since E3 there have been worries about Konami's Ys VI conversion - two main things: the new 3D models, and new music. Quite a few Ys fans seem to be pretty ticked off at Konami at the moment. I'll admit right after E3, I was in outrage (evidence is here on this site and at gamefaq's/gamespot's forums ).
Anyway, now I've actually seen some gameplay footage of the PS2 version. They are pretty high quality videos - got a good idea of how the PS2 version looks in action. And I must say it actually looks good! Adol's animation is fluid and after seeing him in action, I don't mind his taller look now. I can tell it won't take long to get used to it when playing the game. Also, the plants and trees still move in the PS2 version.
How do the enemies look? Well, after seeing what Konami has done with the enemies, I don't think the originals in the PC version were hand-drawn like many people think. I think they were pre-rendered 3D sprites with shading to make them look like they were done by hand. Why do I think that? Because the real-time 3D versions in the PS2 version are SOOO CLOSE to the originals in their looks and in their movement, there's NO WAY Konami made them from scratch. Falcom probably supplied them the 3D models they used to make the 2D sprites.
There's something else I noticed and it wasn't in the E3 version (according to the E3 screenshots). Adol and all the enemies now have Castlevania:LamentofInnocence-style shadows! And they look great! Looks like Konami decided to scrap the the little generic circle shadows. I have no problem with that. Who knows, maybe they'll make some other little improvements before the release.
Let's see, what else... the music (prehaps the most important). The videos I saw were from Quatera Woods and the music that was playing in the backround was... the original Quatera Woods music! So I guess no worries there. Though I think Gamespot said in their new article that Konami has decided to use some music from some of the past Ys games. Didn't quite get that, but I'm not too worried, I guess.
One last thing - according to new articles, Konami will be adding voice acting for every single character in the game! This could be good or bad, but Konami has been getting better with voice actors lately (at least from what I've seen and heard) so it may turn out pretty good
Looking at things now, I think Konami is doing a good job on the translation - perhaps the best they could do translating it to the PS2. If you can, check out some of the new gameplay videos. The PS2 version looks better in action than in the screen shots.
