It just irritates me that everyone's big complaint is that the game is not 'original enough'. I'd like someone to name ONE title for me in the past few years that you could throw into the same box as Napishtim. (At least, such a game that has reached international stores.)
The fact that it doesn't have some sort of wierd quirk or mandatory off-the-wall 'theme' is exactly what makes it original.
Konami kind of let me down when they made Silent Hill 4 into this wierd little game with this niche theme that was there simply to set it apart from the other three games. They gave you no flashlight, because they'd given you 3 already. They gave you no radio, because they gave you 3 already. As a result, the game wasn't as good (in my opinion, anyway).
I really hope the next Silent Hill game goes back to it's root. Or at very least, I hope it remembers to be an excellent game *before* it worries about being original.
I hate this mentality of 'If it's good, only use it once. If it sucks, use it as many times as you want.' It's like if every year they added some wierd new quirk to the game of football.
Anyway, this rant has gone on long enough. #nosmileys

You see, critics have thier priorities screwed up. I haven't read a review in years that judges a game on it's fun factor. The Game Informer review makes a passing mention at Ys 6 being fun, then they spend three paragraphs lamenting the fact that Adol doesn't have any dialogue (clearly, they don't have much experience with this series). This was thier only problem with the game, and they gave it a 7.5 on that basis. Never have I ever seen them drop a Zelda game's score for this.
You see, I don't think critics really understand the Ys series. I don't think it's ever crossed thier tiny little critic minds that it's okay for RPGs to just be plain fun, and that not every game needs a cheap gimmick.
Just do what I do, buy games on gut instinct. Critics have never known what the hell they're talking about.
As for another game that's as good as Ys 6 in terms of being just plain fun; Katamari Damancy. That game is insane. Brilliant, but... well, insane is probably an understatement...

What's so good about this game , is that you feel like playing an ethenic rpg game , the game style is simple yet so fun , the music and the bosses are the best parts

I put Sword of Mana in the same category as Ys, but that is a GBA game were old school is a little more accepted. I think it's sad how games are held to some ridiculous standards. If it's not 3D it doesn't get a chance, it's not 40 hours, it's too short. I couldn't agree with you more about Silent Hill. The first 3 games in the series were great, but because they let the gaming media tell them it was getting stale, they tried to do something new, and it didn't really work. Resident Evil also tried to innovate, and while the game is still good, it's no longer creepy, so it still loses alot of what made it great.

Can't agree with that. RE4 is the only game in the series worth playing, in my book. Finally did something about the asinine control scheme and the increasingly-schlocky plot and made the series something worthwhile (especially after the dustbin that was RECV). Plus, finally improved the inventory system by an astonishing degree. In every possible way, RE4 is leaps and bounds above its predecessors. And yes, I've played all of the games to completion except for RE0. Nothing you said contered my point about it not being creepy. I agree the control scheme needed to be changed, but changing the camera, and making it a straight up action game sacrificed the creep elements that made the series popular. There aren't even any attempts to make you jump. Yes it's a good game, the inventory system is long overdue, especially for anyone that played RE0. The controls were much needed too. But it's a good action game, and not a survival horror game.
I appreciated the fact that SH4 actually dared to do something a little different with the game. The sense of violation revolving around the room itself was masterfully done, and it was pulled off with a level of subtlety rarely seen outside of a good book. I could've done without the limited-inventory system, but that's the only complaint I've heard about the game that I consider in any way valid.
The main problem I have is that they took away your freedom of exploration, and basically cut the game into levels. You were only allowed to explore one very limited area at a time, and once you were done with that, there was no way to back. Plus there were way to many enemies that were just unkillable.

I think someone should move this to the general gamers forum, since it's not about Ys anymore....
I prefer every RE title over any SH title (yes, played both) I did like the old fixed camera and the controls, I found them easy to understand (maybe not for some). and RE4 didn't give me the jumps. in the old RE games there could be a zombie around every corner and you couldn't see it. that was so much fun. and the story was and still is great. altough it's to bad Umbrella corp. is gone...

I love both the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series. Being a Zombie movie addict of the 80's, when I first played Resident Evil on PS1 back in 96' I must admit it was absolutely awesome. No other game could match it in terms of zombieness. Now silent hill 1 for ps1 did what it was intended to do, make you scared. If you still play it to this day, you will find that its soundtrack is what really made the game scary. Silent Hill 1's soundtrack sounds like a nine inch nails album gone twisted. If only a Silent Hill remake would come out for the current generation systems then it could be the scariest survival horror game. Anyhow, this topic is in the wrong forum. To get back to Ys, I am very pleased the way Ys Ark of Napishtim turned out for the PS2. With all the bad rumors of the game before release, you gotta admit the game turned out great. Especially with all the cheat codes to add feautures of the original. Thers no complaints on my end.
