If you're talking about the ps2 version. Yes, it was somewhat disappointing. Bad CGI animation and average voice acting. However, the game itself is still pretty good. I actually enjoyed the sword swinging action.
If you enjoy the series, it's still a great game.

The PC version rocks big time, but unfortunally no english language pack (maybe someday) yea the PS-2 version is weaker than the PC version (but at least it is in english) I guess you can not win either way. but i would highly recommend the PC version it is quite good and even in japanese i was able to get through it fairly easy.

The PS2 version isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I mean with the cheat option you can replace the crap CG scenes with the ones from the PC, you also have the choice to turn the voice acting down(though I recently discovered that turning down the voices also turns down Olha's flute music:(...)
It's the same experience you'd get if you were playing the PC version except with 3d models, and a more zoomed out appearence. The game is still fun, why spend $100 on the PC version if you can't understand Japanese, when you can buy one readily available in English for $40 and is almost as good as the PC version;p
However, the PSP version looks to be keeping the 2d sprites...but eh, don't see myself with a PSP;p

After getting the PS2 version, I finally decided to get the PC version when I found the cd version on ebay for 20 bucks. I'll say though the PS2 version is great, & I love most of the voice acting, the cg cinemas stink(the style, not the graphics themselves), & Alma's Trials is cool.

I've been an Ys fan for many many years and I love the game. My only complaint was I didn't think the music was too amazing, but then I turned down the SFX volume and have since changed my mind.

I turned the SFX volume down a little too. I think they had it up too high. At the default SFX volume, Adol's footsteps muffle out the music.

Uriel - Definitely go for PC version!!! With ps2 version you will lose much more then just original sprites and animation - you will lose the beauty of the Ys environment where every blade of grass, every leaf on a tree is alive! So what if there is no English text there and no voice acting the game is pretty much self explanatory. The visuals, however will amaze you! Use the largest screen resolution, enjoy an incredibly high detailed world of Ys where every crack in a stone, every painting upon an ancient wall, every line of a beautiful carving on a tiled floor will tell you a tale of might, power, greatness, corruption and destruction. Get your video card to work! Give it all you've got: the highest antisophobic filtering, the highest rate of anti aliasing, the full power of a modern sound card with 3D surround ++ capabilities. Don't limit your self to an old, highly outdated upon the date of it's initial release Sonys's hardware!!! Listen to the great music of the original Opening sequence - let your adrenaline flow like mad when you hear the stunning 'boss' theme in a full quadro sound! Why opt to the low quality when Ys deserves better, you deserve better. Don't limit yourself!!! Get a PC version (plus a pack of guddies like a key chain, or an action figure of your favorite Ys hero ) Be the best and I wish you well. (if you stuck or want to get an inside on the story line - people here are always ready to help)

darnit, everyones making me wanna get the PC version, I got the ps2 version within a week of its release, and I found the game to be quite awesome! Am I the ONLY person that didn't find the CG to be a horrible as everyone claims? (maybe because i wanna be a computer animator) It didn't seem that bad to me @_@ Anyways, now i have to get the PC version -_- lol

I think the CG videos are MUCH better than the original ones! MUCH better (the original videos are EXTREMELY poorly animated. They could barely be called videos).

If I can't understand what I'm reading, theres no way Im going to play. Its the same and only reason why i haven't played and beaten Ys V yet ;p

The CG scenes IMO is bad. I mean if ur gonna make CG cinematics, at least make one that's close to Final Fantasy (mainly X and Advent Children)standards. The adaption to CG IMO really lacks creativity. It's more like "hey!!! We made CG cutscenes!!!"
The voice acting is at least better than FFX (where the actors put helluva lot of effort on timing their "reading" with the mouth flaps than actually acting)
But graphicswise, the PS2 version is nowhere near the PC version. When you max everything out, what you'll get is High Definition 60fps colorful eye candy. Take that PS2!!!
Besides that, I found it interesting that the Ys games, though they are RPGs, don't really require that you understand the text to be able to beat the game. Even without a strategy guide, it's like the developers wanted to give us pure fun and that's just what we got.
So, I recommend the PC version if you want the "better version" The PS2 version for a wider audience in your neighborhood. Or both.... for both.

Umm, Ys games aren't FUN in case you don't understand them. Ys is all about the plot. The gameplay is pretty poor, at least in Ys 1-4. YsVI is much more enjoyable in case you understand it. Besides, the 3D models looks great, and they fit into the enviroment perfectly. Something that the 2D sprites does NOT. Get the PS2 version. The PC version is dull in comparasion. At least if you don't know Japanese.

Personally, the CG and lack of badarse music, along . Lack of what badarse music? All the original music from the PC version is in the PS2 version. There were rumors that the music would change but it didn't. The new music ended up in Alma's Trials. Which isn't even that bad... Or do you just mean the music wasn't badass at all? Aside from a few tracks it all knocks me on my ass.

I think the track "Under the occupation" which is a town theme - is the best song in YsVI.
