I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about this on the forums, but recently I was feeling depressed about the almost unplayable Ys VI for PSP I had bought back in February. The load times and slowdown pretty much ruin the experience. I dumped my UMD of Ys VI for PSP into an ISO and ran it off of my memory stick, and the quality of the game changed dramatically. When running off of the memory stick, the game does not hitch at all. It plays almost exactly like the PC version. It's a real shame that the game was so poorly put together by Konami, because with the game running off of the memory stick, all the slowdown and load times that make the game unplayable are eliminated. When I set the PSP's core to 333 Mhz, the game never fell below 30 fps.
I'm not sure what relevance any of this has, but I just wanted to share my experiences.

Man that game must be bad. Even 30 FPS is unacceptable.

The eye can't see more than 30 frames per second. Or so I'm told. I don't buy it, though. When you set the core to 333 Mhz, the game seems to run at around 45-60 frames all the time, and only approaches 30 fps when things get really hectic.
When you play it off the UMD it runs terribly though. Simply horrible. Off the UMD it's always below 30 FPS, and when you change areas, you have to wait 60-90 tedious seconds. Not to mention when you level up, the game freezes for 10 seconds.

The game is completely unplayable off the UMD, IMHO.
Even off the mem stick (at 222MHz) mode, the framerate is vile, and load times only somewhat reduced. I haven't bothered to play it in 333MHz mode yet... and don't care to.

Bandai's ED games aren't ports. If they were, they'd probably be terrible.

Well The White Witch is a very old game (1993, I think). Play ED1/2 for some really atrocious production values, badly-synthed music, and a battle system that was very unintuitive.

No doubt that Konami botched Ys VI PSP, but they didn't fare that much better with the PS2 version, and if it's one thing Konami knows, it's the PS2 hardware.
Though, I suppose it depends on which Konami team we're talking about.

I thought they just did the CGI?
Either way, good riddance. Even that was awful.

I think the PS2 version was an improvement in every area except the frame rate which sucked. And the loading times. I don't understand why people dislike the 3d models - they blend in with the enviroment, unlike those practically non-animated 1995-ish sprites.

I'm with Tom regarding the sprites vs. models. The models were just very stale and boring, like no effort had been put into their design. Had they at least retained the chibi look... Blech.
And the CG cutscenes? Combined with the voice acting... utterly cringe-worthy.
The PS2 version of the game is perfectly serviceable (unlike the PSP one), and I'd honestly recommend it to anyone (and have, at that). After all, even once the English patch for the PC version hits, it'd still be too inaccessible and inexpensive for the casuals.
I guess what offends me most about Konami's efforts on the PS2 version is that: 1) With the unfortunate redesigns, it seemed like they kind of missed the point of the original art. 2) They openly acknowledged to making the changes in order to make the game more accessible to "Western" audiences, yet the game still bombed hard. Both versions.
Just a complete waste. The time would have been better spent working on the graphics and framerate (which took a big blow) and fleshing out the extra content a bit more.
IMHO, of course.

Oh right, the voices. I liked them at first but they got very annoying after a while. I liked the cg videos over the original anime slide shows (because that's what it was, hehe) although Olha and Isha looked really strange to say the least. The first intro was really nice though.

I said it once and I'll say it again.
I will never ever be able to take Chibi Ernst seriously. At all.

PS2 Ys VI had archiac voice acting, but for the most part it wasn't bad. Terra's was awful and she should take a vow of silence. The kids didn't bother me; a lot of young childrens have weird speech shit going on. And I don't care what anyone says, Lloyd and the drunken Redha whose name I forgot had glorious voices. Ernst was pretty good too, if a tad cliche. And Dogi's voice made me grin.

Hot damn, I just played it off the memory stick at 333 MHz (natively, the game runs at 222MHz, so it is quite a big leap). NO loading times, PERFECT frame rate. PERFECTLY playable and as enjoyable as the PC/PS2 versions. If not more, this game is excellent as a portable one. I underrestimated everything. I feel ashamed. Edit: Oooh, I'm all giddy here! Ys VI + PSP = PURE LOVE!

I thought the PS2 port was absolutely fine. I'm not sure why people always seem to speak out against it. The change-over to 3D models was kinda pointless (and I didn't like them as much as the original sprites), and the new opening FMV kinda sucked, but otherwise, I thought the PS2 version was pretty darn good! -Tom I Agree with ya on that. And besides, if you don't like the CGI, just enter a code (I forgot what it was) and it will change over to the original cutscenes, replacing the CGI clips.

A little update on Ys VI PSP - the music appears to be a bit off-sync when you play it in 333MHz. When you get game over, the game over music will keep playing during the loading screen, and if you're in the village for too long, the music will overlap itself, making two songs play simultaneously for a little while (until the other one ends). Also, the loading text can be screwy.
