After trying out the PSP version (and crying about it) I really had the itch to play this again properly. The first thing that was apparent to me, despite how much as Seldané wants to mope that it hasn't, the graphics have definitely been improved from here to Napishtim and Origin. Not that they're BAD in Napishtim.. but you can literally see the difference immediately.. the textures and character portraits here are very low resolution in comparison!
Anyway, I LOVE the soundtrack to this game so much.. I may be alone on this but I hope they include more electronic sounds in the next Ys game. Ruined City Kishgal and Black Ark Unveiled are AWESOME tracks (I'm not actually at that point already.. but damn, I love those songs). The reverse bass in Black Ark is particularly excellent.
Still, this is really filling me with a bit of nostalgia even if it's barely four years old. I still remember quite clearly how absolutely giddy I became when I first saw this game, the music, the graphics, the AWESOME fast-paced action.. it was like magic. Even if the next games were so much better, this one is still a great game that is going to age very well in my opinion.

I want to replay it too! I'm also all for more elctronic music. One of the things I really miss, especially when it comes to the PC Engine versions of Ys is all the great chip music. The Dawn of Ys has incredible chip music.

I'll replay it (PS2)...Soon I'll start my "Ys Tour", that is, I'll go through all the games chronologically (except ORIGIN). I enjoy the music quite a lot (and I LOVE Chip Music too GMF ='( I miss them as well). But I enjoy especially its GamePlay, which was innovative to the series back then.

Have you played the game on a PC? On the PS2 they have much lower texture than on a computer. But I agree the graphics have improved since then. I'm also playing it for the first time in english, since I played it first on the PC. Really cool game!

I am actually playing it on the PC (on the highest settings at 1600x1200).. which is how I'm able to tell the difference with my recent and rampart playing of Ys Origin.

Hey, I'm replaying this one now too! Since I finally got the PC version in my last big Falcom-buying spree, I'm getting to play the PC one for the first time... Still a great game-- but I found out the hard way that jumping from Ys to Ys, in my case: playing some YsF and then swapping to Napishtim a few minutes later makes for painful relearning of the gameplay nuances. Like the lack of dashing, or the fact that you don't just snag healing items on the go... That last one got me stupidly killed once. Duhh...

I want to try creating an alternate soundtrack with some of the remixes that have come about. I think it will make it cooler to replay, as I've played this game too much already, and bought it four times.

I'm done! Wow, I forgot how much silly backtracking is required in this game (that Picard side-quest is a bit much, if you ask me). Still, it's an awesome game. If I didn't have other gaming plans I'd be inclined to do it again in Hard or Nightmare.

They took my favorite song on the soundtrack, Kishgal, and made it.. well, lame. It went from pulsing dance beats to cheap PS1 anime RPG blips. Do you have something else besides this CD? Actually.. it WOULD be pretty rocking to use the vocal version of Mighty Obstacle on boss fights. It'd be like Blue Dragon's boss music, hehe.

or the fact that you don't just snag healing items on the go... Yeah.. I noticed the boss fights felt a bit dependant on having and using healing items (you even get them in Time Attack). Speaking of boss fights, as much as I love Napishtim.. the bosses seem a bit, er, lacking, when compared to the sheer awesomeness of Felghana's and Origin's boss fights. That might be the most glaring weakness of the predecessor in my opinion.

I was going to use most of that Ys VI the Return CD. I know how different Kishgal is on it, but I'm still charmed by it. It's one of my favorite doujin CDs. The vocal version of Mighty Obstacle would be really fun to use. On the Ys vs. Legend of Heroes doujin CD there's a nice version of the Rehda Village music. On Konami's "Special Sound CD" that comes with the limited edition of the PS2 game, there's a fantastic version of Mountain Zone. A couple more choices would be the Release of the Far West Ocean and Mighty Obstacle by moAbi on the Opus Xero site. I haven't found a remix of Port Rimorge yet, but I'm sure one is out there.

I could probably piece together an alternate version soundtrack for Napishtim based on things I've found. Not all that fond of The Return, myself, so I'd probably avoid that one. There's a lot more out there than just that, though.
[Edit]: Speaking of which, I've actually already done that for Ys I. I have enough stuff for Ys II, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Ys VI's soundtrack is perfectly competent on a compositional level, but most of the actual production and sound choices are awful. I don't mind electronic at all, but I do mind chintzy patch selection and poor production. Yes, we should have a manualist play the Napishtim tunes.

Yeah, I agree. Not that they're bad by any means-- but Felghana's boss fights were frenetic and really got you going, whereas Origin's were sheer spectacle. Origin also required some strategic tweaking on the part of players, since you'd be playing it with a different style of character and such. Still... Napishtim feels like it was just Falcom's pilot run in their new direction. Not the perfected formula (that's more like the engine setup in Felghana), but very close. And that's a good thing. Ys VI's soundtrack is perfectly competent on a compositional level, but most of the actual production and sound choices are awful. I don't mind electronic at all, but I do mind chintzy patch selection and poor production. Quoted, as it's the plain and simple truth. I've been crying about this fact for years now...

SCREECHING VIOLINS!! But seriously, while I do notice that the quality of the synth could have been better, it probably doesn't bother me as much as it does with some of you. In fact, for certain tracks I wouldn't have it any other way. Some of Ys VI's music will always be memorable to me, like Ultramarine Deep, quality of synth and all. but Kishgal isn't one of them, unfortunately

Eh, I never understood the complaints about the synth quality.. it's certainly not as fully produced as Felghana's soundtrack but it's not the cheap midi-converted-to-wave stuff found in Ys Eternal either.
But then again.. I've never understood the sheer unbridled praise Ryo Yonemitsu's work gets either. There's a cheese factor to some of his work that has caused it not to age so well in my eyes, much more apparent in the CD releases over the in-game arrangements.. but those are not free from it entirely.

I still say the battle with Ernst is the best in the series.

I found the game music quite great, i don´t have any complains, after all most games tend to have crappy music... then again, the first time i played the game i thought the music sounded capcom too much... specially the megaman games...
it is true that if you finsh the game on nightmare you get something?

Since there's a screenshot floating around the internet somewhere with that very picture- no, it's not really good incentive anymore. Unless you just want to wave the banner of pride that you finished the game in Nightmare mode.
