Origins is intended to be played by all the characters in order to get the whole story. Luckily the characters dont play entirely the same so it makes you want to play the game again. If you want to think innovation for the Ys series then Origins does it in respect to being able to play as multiple characters. This is the first for the series I believe.

You need to play the game to see all the redone bosses from Ys I. This is a very good reason to give the game a chance and progress forward.

I quite agree. The only thing I thirst more from this game is to understand the story but a English patch will eventually be made available.

Heh, I thought that Adol would make some sort of appearance in the game as an eastern-egg or kinda. Pretty cool. I would LOVE to see a playable Adol there as some sort of joke from Falcom. It would rule. (Though I think that won't happen...) About the gameplay...uhm, if I can entertain myself with a certain gameplay, even if it was already used, then what's the point of complaining? I mean, I don't care since I'm having fun. Innovative stuff MAY be good as well as not. So it's risky. Putting the usual gameplay (Yunica's) and adding a kinda new gameplay (Hugo's) was brilliant, I suppose. And hey, there's still The Claw's! = ) Before I play the game, first I need to find that Windows XP CD-Rom to install all of that Eastern Stuff...xD Dangit. I'm dying to play that game. T_T

That's right.
If I feel like playing a good RPG I'll fire up Napishtim. If I feel like playing an RPG that feels more like an arcade machine I'll play Origin.
All the Windows Ys games are excellent, and whatever Ys I play will depend on what sort of fun in a Ys game I want at the time.

Sorry, kinda new, was browsing about trying to explain things to a friend and found the forum, and found this thread... I was actually floored by Origin. No, the gameplay isn't exactly very much different from the past, but it was still fun (friend and I were talking about it being a lot more hectic than previous games, making it fun and exhausting and exhilarating without being frustrating... although Japanese forums seem to agree with my thought of "wow there needs to be an autofire"). But the real meat of it was the story... it's a bit unfair to the non-Japanese-speakers here (which would be most of you), but personally it feels like they put in a very good amount of work into making it work to tie together every Ys game. I mean heck, they even refer to the Ark... not something I expected. I think the story is where they put most of their effort, and I loved it. Incidentally, in regards to the "they don't go anywhere else" stuff, there's actually a slight reason for it, again part of the story. Way too much spoiler (because it's primarily out of the story for Thor's route) to really explain it in detail without really knowing if people want it, but basically, there's not much "elsewhere" in the world at this point, especially not for the inhabitants of Solomon... whom are the "main characters" for the game... Incidentally I consider Hugo and Yunika's routes just filler. Thor's route seems to be the true canon, and it ends up feeling like the other two routes are just there to build up the atmosphere for Thor's story-wise heavier route. EDIT: Biggest beef with the game is that there is no Nightmare mode or anything after you beat the game, although supposely such a thing exists in the .exe file, so we (on Japanese boards) are hoping it gets rectified in a patch... there's a bug where you'll actually see "Nightmare Mode" show up, but it's just a temporary bug Also, no Adol in Time Attack, by the way, unless such a thing would be unlocked by meeting certain requirements *in* Time Attack mode or something.

Biggest beef with the game is that there is no Nightmare mode or anything after you beat the game Well, if I remember correctly, Nightmare modes (as well as the ... Very ... Easy mode) were usually only available through patches. I still find it funny that Falcom needs to release VE. I don't play many platformers but I believe that most of them don't have this super newbie mode. ^^;

For Ys Origin, I'm playing through the whole game in Normal Mode, on all characters. That's what I typically do with Falcom games... Normal Mode is always just right for me. Not too frustrating, but not too easy either. -Tom Me too, I should finish up Yunica today on normal.

Not too frustrating, but not too easy either. Yeah, Normal is a good difficulty. But I've found that, with the latest Ys games, the difficulty is always excellent, and even on the harder difficulties you can never blame cheap computer tactics. I played this (with Yunica) on Normal first, and after the first play through I awlays up the difficulty just to challenge myself, so I'm playing through as Fact on Hard. With the practice from Normal, it's not too challenging, although I'm having trouble with Pictimos at the moment 8(

I'm really glad I managed to force myself to stop playing after the third of Claw's bosses then if all that was just atmosphere building beforehand. Save the final route and a full hard mode replay for when I can actually understand more than the odd bit of what's going on. And yeah, I found normal pretty good for Yunika and Fact. When you're beating Velagunder on hard first try losing 20-25HP though... maybe he's just slightly too good.
