I was just poking through some threads at GameFAQs and noticed that someone dissed Hugo stating that he wasn't comparable to Yunica as all he did was shoot the same thing over and over and that his magic sucked. :((((((((((((( x 200
Frankly, I enjoy using Hugo more than Yunica and like his Skills over her's as well (with the exception of the Fire skill). Then again, I have preference to ranged fighting over melee so my opinion is probably quite biased. :B

well, if you look at it objectively. Yunica is more of an Adol charater with swords and a bit of supporting magic. Hugo however is a totally different character, with magic only and no sword fighting, something we haven't really seen in Ys games.
That's why I think that Falcom took the oppertunity to create different types of characters with Ys Origin, because of the story in the game. If they get a lot of positive reactions to Hugo we might see a more Hugo typed Adol in future Ys games, but that's just my opinion.
Oh and as for playability, defeating enemies with Hugo is a lot easier than with Yunica, since you can fire from distance. But then again Yunica can jump a lot further.
I can't form an opinion at this moment about who I prefer most, because I haven't played enough with Hugo.

I prefer Yunica over Hugo but really I like them Both. I think Toal is the most fun to play but have to agree with Deuce that his magic skills kinda suck

...Need I really say who I prefer? The sig tells all. Kidding aside, they all had their good and bad points. I found Hugo the most fun by far because he's something other than hack-slash-slash-hack. Not that that isn't loads of fun in its own right, because it is. Yunica was more tried and true to the Ys formula- but maybe it's just me- I could swear her swinging is a lot slower than I recall Adol's ever being in OiF. o.O? It kind of bothered me for awhile... On the OTHER hand... as I'm now replaying Hugo after finishing with the Claw... (aka pinball of death. ^_^ Wind skill how I love thee.) Ye gods, Hugo moves like tar in comparison. ;;; I didn't realize how slow he is compared to the other two, even with dash! Overall Hugo's still my favorite for more versatile gameplay. (Also my favorite in general, but that's another matter~)

Could be I played through with Yunica first, but I prefer her to Hugo. Hugo has the ranged attacks, but I found I had to get darned close to hit the enemies anyway. His shots have range, but the range is noticeably limited, especially in boss battles. His magic is somewhat lacking in range, too. So, I often had to maneuver him in ways very similar to Yunica.
I'm finding (just barely into his story) Toal to be rather interesting, though. I'll have to wait and see how the magic pans out for him.

Aha, that's what it was then. I just know I was bashing the Z key and going "Wha? Come on, mittens! Swing! SWING!" ....a lot. Was it just me or did they also tend to find subtle ways (via bosses and whatnot) to try and 'encourage' you to use that sword more than the axe as the game went on for Yunica? I'm pretty sure it does more damage, magic aside. Maybe to make up for the lacking number of swings?

I seem to recall it being very necessary to take off Gelaldy's hands, or something like that. I know there were a few other boss fights that it made a big difference in, but they're escaping me presently. :-\

It definitely does more damage, but this is offset by it being proportionately slower.

Toal / Thor is your 3rd playable character... This guy. =P Better known in art so far (obviously) as The Claw. And yep, once you clear the game with both Yunica and Hugo, you get to play as him.
