Ok, found the manga, yeah it does have Furigana, but they are REALLY small, so if I find a scanner I am prolly gonna have to do it really high res so they show up. I'd forgotten some of the weird stuff with the manga, like the fact that it is read western style (left-to-right) and has a rather unique page structure (much bigger, and more square than a usual tankobon.

If there is a rich person in these boards please donate $30,000 USD to Nightwolve so that the patch stay freeware and don't go Shareware. To register a patch etc. consumes time. I will soon get a International Debit card but I can't decide between Visa, Master Card or American Express.

I know what you mean... People using his work without permission or giving a credit. Those who will upload a torrent with he's work without the documentation or a prepatched ISO etc. And if this was not everything they also leak he's work who I think was the drop that shattered the glass. I hope that there was at least one rich guy between all members because maybe some high quality donations could lighten he's mood.
"So, with that background, I thought I'd discuss my tentative future plans. The future will be much, much different; all patches will be radically redesigned to deal with certain issues and specific individuals. Aside from my plans to retire for a bit and return, you can add that much more development time for anything in the future. Things will slow down here a great deal. If I continue with the Ys VI project, it will also go through an early access donation period then go freeware. However, that will be the last freebie. "Ys Origins," is a possibilty, but it will be shareware from the get-go which will be enforced without mercy against those that would try their luck to fuck with it. I gave the "fanbase" freebies for years and years. I gave Ys I Complete, no strings; I gave Ys II Complete, no strings; I gave Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys, no strings; I gave a lot for this fanbase, but I cannot ignore that portion that is there, however small, the spoiled juvenile/infantile brat portion, ready to reap all the benefits of my work/dedication, and then simultaneously go so far as to try to intentionally hurt me financially for what I thought was a fairly modest system to generate donations before the official release, something I did to avoid going shareware in the first place. That all went out the window, which unfortunately easily could've been avoided had I spent more development time to secure the patch and easily blacklist those that betrayed my trust.
Anyway, I'll get into specifics after the patch goes public at which point I'll be offering rewards to track down certain individuals. "
It seems that he wants this to become shareware... The painful and annoying process of registering a product...

Shareware? Isn't that like asking for trouble? Not only is it illegal to acutally make these patches - but to sell them?

He said that it will be safe if the game is not licensed. I don't mind paying but I do mind messing with the registration process. That's why I buy programs in a box instead of downloading sharewares.

Well as long as the e-mail is not full of junk there should be not problem. Unless the process sent you a code by other means than your e-mail.

I believe it IS illegal to reverse-engineer and otherwise modify non-open source code without permission regardless if it is licensed in the country you live in or not.

I said that to him right now. I think that if this keeps up he will leave translations for good.

I think it's a little overkill, considering people will just come along and hack the patch anyway. >_> There's no getting around human stupidity; there's ALWAYS going to be THE ONE idiot somewhere that decides that it's a jolly good idea to spread something around for free.
If he's REALLY concerned about people spreading his works around, then maybe he should only make it available for the folks he knows and trust. I seriously can't think of any other way of deterring thieves. ._.

I wouldn't call them idiots at all. Its their hobby, and I'm sure they have a lot of fun, hacking copy protection systems, etc. It seems they don't intentionally spread it around either most of the times. Their keygens, etc leak - just like this YsF patch did. And besides, this is waaaaay to obscure, I don't think anyone would find and hack this patch.

I think he's taking the whole situation too personally.. though understandably so, I guess. Maybe there's more to it then the patch being leaked, I don't know. My interest in the translations are minimal but it'd still be a bit sad to see the work on Napishtim and/or Origin be in jeopardy because of this.
I don't want to add to the fire.. but I think trying to fight the warez kiddies is only going to make things worse for him, as they're the kind of people that have nothing to lose and will just screw with him until he snaps. I have no real issue with him trying to be compensated for his work (though I know Deuce has mentioned not seeing a dime of it, which is kind of sheisty) but the honest truth is that the more he tries to prevent certain people from not getting it.. the more they will work to get it.

And besides, this is waaaaay to obscure, I don't think anyone would find and hack this patch. Well, it may be obscure but with the way things are going, I'm sure someone will do it just to spite him. Anyway, I don't really agree with the bit about hackers not meaning to spread their works since some of them seem to spend time making spiffy little logos and adding music and such. Others seems to be rather proud of their works and thank folks for downloading the stuff and to spread the illegal love around. Don't ask me why I know this. XD Point is, any method NW uses/takes will not work.

Actually, there's usually one person doing the hacking and someone else doing the graphics bit. They just take random trackers (without permission, most likely) to use as the background music. Everything to make it as neat as possible. For themselves, but since more people are involved in it, and that they probably give it to friends, etc makes the stuff leak.

Ys games are not as oscure as many people think, Ys Origin was announced on rpgfan.com and rpgamer.com. Also there is many threads in Konami Forums begging Konami to licence it.
