My friend just picked up this game and at first he crashed after the two opening sequences when the first txt box popped up because he wasn't using APPLOCALE, but after he started using AppLocale, he gets far into the Roda Tree sequence and then his entire computer freezes up.

May sound stupid but... he does have Japanese language support installed, right? You don't have to change your non-unicode language but you do need to install the language support for AppLocale to work as far as I know.

"his entire computer freezes up" sounds like a conflict. How much other software does he have installed on what OS using what hardware etc..... and when was the last time he reformatted / reinstalled windows??

I had the same problem, and I found that I had to have my computer running in "Use Japanese encoding for all non-Unicode apps" mode. AppLocale didn't cut it.
On the other hand, if you install the patch that translates the config utility, it will also modify YsO so that you can run it normally, without any funky language settings.

Well he tried that, said same deal. crashes at the tree seen, and his ENTIRE computer crashes not just the game...
Before when he didn't have applocale running, it would crash at the first text box... Now with applocale running his computer crashes at the tree sequence shortly after.

He got it figured it out somehow, not sure exactly what the problem was...
Although now I'm having a problem... I just finally got around to updating to 1005 and I noticed the Nightmare, Adol unlock is gone now and the data. files are still in the release dir.
Did they remove this in 1005?

So how can you officially unlock Adol in Time attack and Nightmare difficultly then?
I've beaten the game with all 3 characters and on normal and hard, whats the deal?

Boy, that "thematrix" guy is an ass. But then, it's a GameFAQs board, so there's no surprise... I get the feeling he's of the same ilk as the player-killer from that WoW Southpark episode.

Boy, that "thematrix" guy is an ass. But then, it's a GameFAQs board, so there's no surprise... That was uncalled for. Keep that unprofessional comment to yourself. Everyone has their say, whether right or wrong, sound or unsound. That guy is right, though. Falcom screwed up the game and a lot of Japanese players (even Falcom loyalists) have complained about it -- mostly programming related. As Miyamoto puts it: "A delayed game is eventually good. A bad game is bad forever." The latter is the case...and quite unfortunate. Unlocking Adol: Apply with older patches to undo the problem. Falcom stated that they are working on an add-on program patch, which will allow you to play nightmare mode. They didn't release much info, though, so I can't say much. I'm speculating they are also working on rectifying the memory leak in bossrush time attack mode.

Lord, I have to stop posting relevent threads from GameFAQs. People seem to get a little touchy. :/
I think there's a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes in the industry that actually causes companies to hurl out incomplete/not-thoroughly-tested games onto the market -- sometimes beyond their control. I'm not saying that Falcom didn't have the time to go through their game a bit more (since we'll never truly know the circumstances they faced) but to accuse them of being lazy and pimping out their game is kind of silly. ._.~
And I still don't understand the relevance of the worth of a game versus the whole "don't buy it! You can cheat easily!" argument. As far as I know, consumers generally don't care about things like that. In fact, I bet a lot of them would LOVE to exploit different things in games if given the chance. However, I believe they mostly care about how fun and enjoyable the gameplay is (among other stuff like story, music, etc.). Just because a company puts out something "early" doesn't mean everyone involved in putting it in stores doesn't deserve to get paid for the time and effort on the final product. 9_9
And thematrix is wrong about people not buying heavily buggy games! *coughs*I have the Ultima IX: Ascension Dragon Edition. Not that it's really playable but I have it!*cough cough*
Edit: I forgot to mention that there should be a limit to the whole glitch and bug issue though. Ultima IX was just unforgiveable. I mean, the damn Avatar fell through the floor while I was trying to move him up a set of stairs at the beginning of the game! He became permanently stuck in oblivion. Not fun.

That was uncalled for. Keep that unprofessional comment to yourself. Everyone has their say, whether right or wrong, sound or unsound. Haha, oh wow. Because this is a highly professional environment, isn't it? A little Ys board on the internet. Yes, everyone has a right to have an opinion, and Deuce just expressed his. Deal with it. And nunuu, it's like the law of GameFAQs' forums or something. Every opinion must be extreme, one way or the other Or so they say.
