As for the game itself, I can't say I was particularly impressed at the notion of a bunch of J-mo kids repeatedly (and "stylishly") blowing their brains out to fight bad trampstamps brought to life. Way to trivialize the act itself. Here, watch me draw my gun-thingy with an Ocelot-style flourish and splatter my non-brain across the virtual landscape! Seriously, I saw a fight against a giant valentine heart wrapped in chains and with angel wings. Whisky tango foxtrot... Decent RPG or not, it's hard to shake the notion that the whole thing was a desperate play to seem "dark." Agreed. It was little bit disappoiting since Persona 2 games are among my favourite PSX games. Dubbings in Eternal Punishment are pretty decent for its time as well. Ulala in particular is hilarious. Do look forward to Persona 4 though. Much belatedly. I was playing Baten Kaitos in Japanese when it first came out. (NO ONE HAD HEARD OF IT AT ALL, so I imported it thinking NO CHANCE of this being released stateside. Haha. 6.6a; ) I actually was *heartbroken* to hear the English voices, because I loved the Japanese cast so much. ;o; If possible, can you please post some of the event clips for Japanese version of this game on Youtube? I would love to hear how the Japanese voices sound like since the English voices were so awful.

I could never take Baten Kaitos seriously. From the bizarre Tower of Druaga surprise (which actually felt more like a lengthy how-to) to the over-exaggerated voice acting, the story lost its flavor tenfold. That, and I just couldn't get into the card battle system. I mean, seriously. Having to re-arrange your deck every time you go someplace new (not to forget back tracking!) so you don't accidentally heal your foes is hardly a picnic. The only thing that made any part of it worthwhile was the interesting plot twists halfway through the game. The battles are too lengthy and unrewarding. (I remember spending half a day working on the Druaga area alone thanks to that flaw)
I did like the voice acting, if only for the fact that it was over-exaggerated and fun to pick on. (What's his face with the oar... ha!) Honestly, it's just overrated. The LoH series on the PSP, god-awful as the translations are, in my opinion, infinitely better by more leaps and bounds than I can count. Seriously, what's the fuss with the LoH series on PSP? Can it not find love anywhere?

I rather appreciate the whole head-shooting gimmick solely for its novelty (though it definitely IS a gimmick, there's no question about that!). Ya know, sometimes I wonder about Japan cuz yesterday, I was reading up on why CLAMP's manga, X (or X/1999), has been on hiatus for so long. Apparently, it was pulled from serialization because of increasingly violent imagery and some too-close-for-comfort situations in the manga that mirrored real life. I believe some girl's death was blamed on the series too. >_> I guess they usually allow crazy weird and violent things to hit store shelves but will pull them once someone imitates them in real life. Oh wait -- this doesn't just happen over there! Banning or pull things happens in the US too. :P

Oh, I am surprised that no one mentioned Makai Kingdom yet. That game has the best voice acting of all Nippon Ichi games released here. Seriously, English voice acting for Disgaea games are horrible while Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad are O.K. However, Makai Kingdom's English voice acting manages to be not only good but also better than Japanese voice acting. Valvoga and Zetta in particular are hilarious.

You know, Hellassassin is pretty much correct with Makai Kingdom. It's voice acting is superb. The VAs were clearly having a lot of fun with it.

Methinks the problem is that companies don't put the time and money to look for REAL talent. Instead, they simply just go for people that can read the script without tripping over every other word. All I have to say about that is look at Lunar one and two Complete. Those two games had the best voice acting I've ever heard in my whole life. Sadly Working Designs had to go and die. Ohh! And I pronounce Ys as ease.

Best voice-acting ever = Ys Book I & II xD Hmm... we went a bit offtopic, didn't we? xD ok, I'm partially responsible of that, but still... I love mapS.

I think it is absolutely terrible. Not the worst I have heard, but I haven't that heard much worse voice acting either.

See, the Lunar games did indeed have good voice-acting, and a really top-notch translation... but the best voice-acting you've heard in your entire life? Really? It was kind of cartoony... like an old anime dub. A GOOD old anime dub, mind you -- kind of along the lines of Tenchi Muyo -- but certainly not a masterpiece of voice-acting by any means. I think it's easily topped by Dark Cloud 2, Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos Origins, most of Shadow of Destiny, and even Ys VI! Now, for its time? Yeah, that was the best voice-acting around, without a doubt. -Tom What I meant by best was that I liked all the voices and thought they fit well with the character they where assigned to. I'll give that Xenosaga and Ys VI (I've not played the other games mentioned) are better in certain ways, but in the case of Xenosaga it was a much more serious series then Lunar, thus it only makes sense that the voice acting would be more serious and of a different quality. Ys VI had about the same quality of voice acting and was often just as cartoony as Lunar. Plus I had problems with the voice cast of both games. I loved the voice cast Xenosaga episode one, but two (epically two) and some characters in three I just hated the voices of. Though I will admit that my all time favorite voice acted part in a video game was Allen from the Xenosaga series. Mainly because he very consistent with how he did it, plus Dave Whittenburg was the person who did Allen's' voice, and I'm not sure how many people know this but he also did Adols' voice in the Ys anime, under the name Dave Lelyveld.

I was half-serious. xD I DO think it's one of the best voice-acting ever, but not necessarily the best. And yeah, Snatcher has great voice-acting, I couldn't have asked for more from it too. And it has been over 10 years since I played Metal Gear Solid, so I don't remember a thing of the voice acting. I separate voice-acting in games like this: - Great - OK - Bad For example, The Granstream Saga has OK voice-acting for me. It's good, but it could have been better. But whatever. XDDD Oh! Also being on-topic, in Ys Book I & II, "Ys" is pronounced perfectly! But I still like the way FM-77 pronounces it! Cool way.

Is it the same guy in both the Ys I and Ys II anime? If so, he's really improved since Ys I; I really like Ys II's Adol.

Ah, the outtakes were the best! Especially when he started to bitch at Reah/Feena (No matter how different their hairstyles are, I ALWAYS get them mixed up!) about the kind of thanks he gets for getting her damn harmonica back. Priceless!

Glad I could educate, it's nice to know that paying attention to that kind of stuff finely had some real use.

Lol. So we got 7 pages of posts discussing on how to pronounce Ys. Man, gotta love this forum.
Btw, I used to pronounce it as "Wais" until I finally learned Japanese.
