Hello everyone, I am new here and glad to be here ^.^! I have just recently got into the Ys series! I played Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim for PS2 in the states, then ordered a copy of Oath in Felghana, so I've been playing that a while now. It's REEEEALLY fun! So I decide to go back and get the older ones now. I have been watching Ancient Book of Ys volumes recently, so I become more familiar with background. I just ordered Ys I and II: Eternal Story, Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, and Ys IV: Mask of the Sun and I just wanted some ups and downs about the games if you don't mind =D! I've heard some REALLY bad things about Ys III, but I wasn't just going to get I and II, then skip to IV, hahahaha. So please, my fellow Ys fans, could you please share some experience with a new Adol? Hehe, thank you and I hope to make friends on this wonderful Ys forum!

Welcome! I'm new to this forum myself and I'm finding that the community here is helpful and courteous. www.classicgaming.com/reviews/Ys/Ys.htm^ That site explains all the various Ys games and their features better than what I can tell you from my experience with each game.

Soooo...there's nothing good about III and IV on PS2 at all? Sou naaaaa~ ! At LEAST tell me it was worth adding to my collection ._. . I'd just like to hear some ups and downs about I and II, III, and IV for PS2 if anybody has played them. I'll be receiving them in the mail soon, but I'd just like to know what you guys found to be AWESOME about the games and what you thought was horrible as well. Sankyuu~! Jyaaaaan~<3 =^..^=! Edit: Sorry sorry! I forgot to even thank you! Thank you for welcoming to this wonderful forum! Hahaha, so clumsy of me ^.^;

ok....IMO, Ys I and II is awesome on the PS2....the load time is terrible though like Deuce said.....Ys III is good and I'll leave it at that....Ys IV is fair and takes patience because of some issues such as poor graphics and an imaginary border that helps enemies hit you which is very frustrating. You will definitely like I and II though, of course the Turbografx version is still superior in overall feel of the game and also music. Turbografx version gets a 10 in my book.

I really liked Ys I & II Eternal Story on the PS2. I recommend that one definitely. If this is your first time playing Ys III, you might enjoy it a lot more than those of us that have played other versions. Same goes for Mask of the Sun for PS2. I bought them all as well and for the most part enjoyed them. Then you play Oath in Felghana and realize the PS2 versions of III and IV could have been much better. I say enjoy your purchase, but if you ever get a chance though check out the PC Engine/Turbo Duo Ys IV The Dawn of Ys and Ys III, then you'll see why a lot of people are unhappy with the PS2 versions.

Thank you for replies everyone ^.^! I appreciate your love for Ys! I just got into the series kind of. I played Ys VI, and the next one I play is Oath in Felghana, now I am importing I and II, III, and IV because I play better on PS2 than PC, but I would not trade anything to play Oath in Felghana on PS2, it is like a dream on PC =O! I love it! I just finished watching Ancient Book of Ys: Volume 5 Messa last night, so I am close to finishing that to watch Ys OVAs ^.^! So for me, first time playing Ys I - IV, the PS2 versions may not be so bad to me afterall since I have nothing to compare them to? Please tell me! I really enjoy hearing your opinions about such a wonderful series! Sankyuu~<3!

Yeah, most likely. Heck, you might even be impressed with your purchases. Although, if you enjoy Ys IV for the PS2, you'll absolutely love Ys IV: DoY for the Turbo graphics. That's the best 'old school' Ys game in my opinion.

for Ys I & II reccomend either the turbo/pc engine versions and the pc/ps2 version. they were decent. seems the turbo/pc engine had better load times then the ps2 version and my turbo is only a 1x cd-rom. Best port of the 3rd in the series is OIF. The dawn of Ys of for Ys 4 was the best one all around depending on who you talk to. dont know much about 5. and Ys6 on the pc was excellent.
just another opinion (day late and a dollar short)

Sorry, I know this is a little off-topic, but I just got done watching the last episode of Ancient Book of Ys, Book of Fact. I just wanted to say, Lord Fact was really awesome! He was one of the VERY VERY few "bad" guys I have seen that wasn't all arrogant and big-headed about everything. He was actually kind at heart too, even if he didn't show it well, lol. But anyways, I was just expecting this crazy battle between him and Adol, but Lord Fact was really awesome. I can't believe he told Adol to do that. That really changed my first opinion about him. Well..anyways, sorry for the randomness, but I just felt like sharing XD. I'll be watching the 4 OVAs tomorrow sometime. I hope they are as good as the episodes were! And yet..I still wait for my copies of the PS2 Ys games T_T.

Well in the Turbo game of Ys 1 and 2 he sounded arrogant so I kicked his butt all over the screen.

I've been looking around through some older threads, and I've got a question. Should I play them in this order? Ys I and II: Eternal Story---> Ys IV: Mask of the Sun----> Ys III: Wanderers from Ys? I heard they should actually be played in that order instead of just I, II, III, THEN IV? If anybody could clear this up for me, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: I think I just gave you a karma point Seldane, but I don't know for sure? Do you remember if your karma was 8 or 9 when you replied? Cause I clicked this word "exhalt" below your karma and it took me to your profile. Anyway, I just wanted to give ya a karma point for being so nice like you are ^.^!

Well, so far the game is actually pretty fun..BUT......I keep dying to this first boss in the shrine. The one where the blue magic shoots out of the walls to the left and right. I feel so bad losing to this guy already like 20 times ~_~. He doesn't even attack >.<! I built up to level 6 on the Plains and I've got Plate Mail, Small Shield and Short Sword. Oh well..maybe I will go out and get another level and more money to get Long Sword, then kill him . I set difficulty to normal by the way. Jyaaaaan~<3 =^..^=! P.S. Since I am not going to be playing Ys II until I finish watching the OVAs, could someone please tell me if you push buttons to attack in Ys II? It's kinda weird to me how you have to run into your enemies in Ys I, so I was just wondering if they changed it in II. Also, what is the difference in playing Ys I and II Eternal Story, than just selecting Ys I or II individually to play? Thanks! EDIT: Ahem...wow...yeeeeah..that Long Sword really did make a difference ._. *blinks* I killed him in three hits >_>;...wow...anyways, fun game XD!

Sorry for posting yet AGAIN before someone else replies, but..I just finished it and I am really impressed. I really like that game as surprising as that probably may be to the ones who thought it just sucked, lol. My time on finishing is 7 hours, 12 minutes, and 47 seconds (yes, I had the option on that has the little timer in the bottom right corner XD). Now I'll definitely have to hurry and watch the Ys II OVAs so I can start on Ys II: Eternal ^.^. Some things in Ys I: Eternal threw me off every now and then, like the "piece of paper" sidequest. I was just following the story like I watched it in the anime, then the first time I saw Luther, I was like, "Wait..why does this person have his own artwork? o.O" Then I finally realized who he was and I was like, "He didn't look ANYTHING like that in the anime =O! I mean..comeon! What happened to the facial hair and the outfit! What about your instrument?!" Hahahaha. A lot of the characters looked..well.."different" to say the least..and threw me off. I also don't remember seeing Slagf? And Dogi wasn't a main part of the story, except smashing through the brick wall to save me when I was stuck with Luther XD. I just wish he could have ventured the mine with me, haha. "Oi..Adol. Let's take a break and have some lunch. Hand me my bag Adol. Wha? I just handed it to you a minute ago. *pouts* My freshly baked bread! DAMN YOU MONSTERS!!!!" Hahahaha! Sorry for the cursing there, but I just really wished he could have been in my party. Comeon..even Feena was in my party for a moment and she had a level/HP and everything, so I don't see why Dogi couldn't have been -.-'. Bah, oh well. Sorry for such the long message, but I just wanted to actually tell you guys that I enjoyed Ys I: Eternal and I look forward to II! See you!

Just as in Ys 1, you run into enemies to attack in Ys 2. It's strange at first, but you'll get used to it. I personally like that combat system...it's one of the unique aspects that makes the Ys series so great.

Jyaaaaaaan~<3 =^..^=! nice size to quote... ha ha ha one thing to remember when playing the game vs the anime. The origionals and turbographx/pc-engine were made before the anime. The anime really was not representative of the game. If i remember right Ys II amine stears further away from the game also. I really dont reccomend using the amime as a guide for the game. as for character appearence. seems each artest makes the characters look different between the various versions of the games. seemed to me that the amime ones are the most different.

So what you're saying is, that I could actually go ahead and play Ys II: Eternal without having to wait until I watch the OVAs? Cause the beginning for them seem similar, like..with him getting the power and crashing into this land and this girl finds him. It's the same with the OVAs as well o.O. Well..at least I think so, lol. Anyways, if I don't have to watch the OVAs to get started on II, then just let me know and I'll get right on it, hahahaha.

I think Dalles had it the worst in the anime - funny looking old bald fat guy... ugh. Not very threatening.
