Yeah it looks pretty good, especially for a free game. I wish I had the time to play it.

I dunno, judging from the screenshots, it consists of wide open areas with no detail or otherwise interesting stuff. The graphics also remind me of 1996 a lot.

The graphics really feel like Guild Wars to me(got bloom?!) Nice consistent character designs too. Here's a link to the online version, dunno how many players it supports. I'm gonna try this next week. www.tomoshibi.net/guide/rolo/index.htmlBut geez. It's FREE. And judging by this fansite/data compilation, it's pretty extensive: oxygen.s15.xrea.com/ruinas/At least there's nothing to lose by trying it. There is an Ys-ish game someone recommended me but it BLOWS. And I wish I asked people on this forum first. As cute as it looks, Tenerezza is GARBAGE. The promise of a fun core mechanic just got addled with fun destroying BULL CRAP, choking it to death.

Yeah, that's about what I thought of it. If I can get someone for online play, it might be worth sticking around. EGS's games are a far better foray.
I also tried Tenerezza at the suggestion of a friend on another gaming forum. TENEREZZA IS EVIL. The basic premise seems so cool, but the game suffers heavily from sadistic game design decisions like paying money(which is hard to get) to save the game in dungeons, plus making you need what feels like 5000000 of an item to get an upgrade. Couple that with an inventory system that has you running out of space after the first 2 rooms of a dungeon? FAIL!
The new wave of Shining Force games for PS2 and whatnot have you hacking and slashing away instead of turn-based strategy. They're OK, I had fun with Shining Tears since I played with a friend but I dunno how the rest are.

Shining Tears is completely different from Shining Force Neo and Shining Force Exa. It was even developed by a completely different company (Nex Entertainment - the developers of games as Shining Soul 1, Children of Mana, Resident Evil Code Veronica, and Ragnacenty [my favorite game EVER!]). As for Neo and Exa... they are absolutely awful! Endless hacking and slashing, with absolutely no depth whatsoever (most games in the genre has at least SOME degree of depth, but these do not). They are without a doubt the most repetitive games I have ever played. Did I mention that the challenge level is exactly zero? That makes the repetitive gameplay even more interesting.

By the way, the first version of Frane can be freely downloaded on exe-create website. I should have mention that before.

Oh, frane. I actually completed it years ago on a Chinese port. Back then I thought it was a damn Ys rip off. But it was a way to pass time. Kinda gave up on the 2nd and 3rd one, even though I still own the bloody chinese ports.

Well you know I'm going to have to go with the Xak series... of course. : 0 I think that is probably the closest in terms of a series of games. Crystalis is also pretty similar as well, and it reminds me of Ys II NES and Ys Book I & II in that they share many of the same sound effects. You'd should definitely give Crystalis a try if you have not already as it is easily one of the finest gems to appear in this genre for the NES.

It's also very lengthy, and slow. I liked it, but grah, the saving and shit... X( I keep losing my files. On PC emulation.

I downloaded Ruins of the Lost Kingdom, and played it but... is it just me or do the enemies in the first area just stand around waiting for you to approach?

The plain areas and the lackluster enemies are certainly a downer in the game, but for a freebie, I thought it was good. If it had a good coat of polish on it, I'd pay for it.

What about Golvellius? Loved that. Super cool game, but I don't think it's particularly similiar to Ys. In fact, it's really unique and there's nothing similiar to it.

MKR on the Saturn is an awesome game. Speaking of Saturn games I suppose you could include Wrinkle River Story. Started out cool but got sucky REALLY fast. I thought about mentioning Napple Tale for DC. That's an amazing game.

Anybody who dislikes it or writes the title incorrectly, gets banned. Those are the rules. Always been. Always will be. Always will never get edited and always gets enforced by royalty and similiarly awesome kings. So: banned.
