Has anyone played Silver or Record of Lodoss War on Dreamcast? Record of Lodoss War looks very Ysie... any thoughts on these games? Record of Lodoss War DC is more Diablo-esque than Ys. Still a fun game because leveling is almost exponential. You start off the game doing tens of damage and finish up fighting dragons doing 100k damage and the fight still takes several minutes due to all the health they have! And then you go and fight a God for a final boss. The ending always makes me laugh because you beat the God and then it just goes "oh hell no, you didn't! I'm a God!" and kills you anyhow.

Only the ending is. You are told right at the beginning that you've been resurrected to fight Kardis. Anyhow.. game is old enough (and possibly not worth playing through just to see the ending) that the limitations on spoilers have passed ;P

If I thought I was honestly ruining anyone's urge to drudge up and play Lodoss War DC for its wonderfully throw-away standalone plot, I would've held my tongue. In this case I was doing everyone a service by sharing the awesome twist without having to go through painful hours of mindless grinding, Gouraud shading, "A mighty spell!", and getting OHKOed by golems of various construction (wood, stone, iron, steel, diamond, mithril... they'll all punch you in the face at least once in the game) This forum still needs spoiler tags If anyone else has actually played the game to completion besides me, feel free to raise your hands. EDIT: On second thought, I might make a 5 minute video of "A mighty spell!" because it's worth it.

I emulated WonderSwan for Dicing Knight and that ran fine.

Good thread.
Can I ask for, what Ys-like-games are there that; a) runs on a PC, and b) are in English?

The sad part is that oftentimes the gameplay quality in those porn games is plenty more inventive and absorbing than that of many AAA titles >____<
I think there's quite few games like Ys in general, Zelda aside, since after Ys6 it's sort of a weird blend of a few different genres. I guess the Seiken Densetsu series and the Crystal Chronicles series somewhat resemble the later Ys games, but only barely.

I've been playing a little Grand Master after skimming that article and it's been pretty fun. Not the most complex game in the world, and it seems a bit dated for a 1991 NES/FC game, but interesting for at least a playthrough if you like action RPGs
On the topic of action RPGs for the NES, but not exactly Ys related (other than it being an action RPG), I've just remembered a game call Villgust. It's a standard RPG but when you get into a random encounter, it turns into a side-view action game as you fight the monsters. Encounters can be up to 5 separate groups of monsters and you have to choose who in your party will fight which group. Another nice touch is when you get the (near?)final equipment for a character, their sprite changes. There was an English fan-translation done for it waaaay back, but it was awful like someone had just dumped the raw text and translated it literally with no context. Funny enough having random people in a town stating "welcome to our shop!", but some of the dialog is outright misleading later on. In college I always wanted to try my hand at properly translating the game, but I never decided to pursue learning how to get the text out of ROM dumps and figuring out how to patch it back in. There was also a Villgust RPG for the SFC. It was a more straightforward affair other than when you hit a certain level, enemies stopped appearing until you moved on to the next area. Nothing says you're sufficiently leveled than having no more random encounters

Kemco released a game called "Lagoon" for SNES and SHARP x6800 systems. secretplace.cml-a.com/snesscreens.phpIf you look at the screencaps among other things, you would think they deliberately ripped an Ys game and put their own art in it. >_>

Whoa, so it's like, an OFFICIAL release, not even a fan-translation? Of a doujin game? That's awesome! -Tom Yeah, it is a perfectly official release, I'm 100% sure.

Grand Master looks like my dreams come true. Going to check out asap! Hit detection and controls are a bit sloppy, but it was fun for a playthrough. I'm still trying to figure out if it is possible to do a 100% clear in that game. So far every stage order I've tried only gets me 4 out of the 5 emblems before the final level. I found this website but so far haven't bothered to parse through it all.

Randomly downloading free apps and demos at the App store for the iPod touch and came across a game called AcrossAge. I was totally surprised to discover that the game uses the bump system for the melee character! It even suggests that you attack diagonally and all! ^o^ Too bad the movement controls be so difficult. Or maybe it's just my thumb. :/ Reading the basics help page for the touch helped! Link to a review that I merely skimmed: toucharcade.com/2010/02/11/across-age-time-traveling-is-the-solution/

Speaking of online MMOs that resemble the gameplay style of Ys, a friend recently pointed me to a free one called Dragonica that looks promising. Has anyone tried that one out yet? Just wondering if it is worth sinking some time in or not. dragonica.iahgames.com/site/default.aspx-Thomas

About Ys like games. After playing the entire Ys series, every other adventure type game seems more playable. I going to say it. Falcom are the inventors of the J-RPG. Falcom took Wizardry, and turned it into Super Mario. There goes the ultimate answer to this question. Without Falcom all RPG games would be like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy forever. Without them, Dragon quest and Final Fantasy probably would have never exsisted. The same could be said for Genon, animation or Project Ako. We would never have the arugument of is Zelda an RPG or Adventure. Most native PC games from countries other than Japan play nothing like Ys, and most Japanese PC games made by companies other than Falcom are porn. -Tom Unlike the rest of the world, Japan has the Geisha, and the Geisha is the ideal of Japan. The entire nest egg of women think they are Geisha quality in Japan. It is called a comic adventure, and the drop down list is called a dating game. Without these games being created, there might have been nothing ever created. Look at Snatcher folks, and any other comic adventures. The gere is called sexploitation, AKA mens magazines. They also have the same thing for women, which is called a Soap, AKA womens magazine. Also AV models in Japan are respected compared to the porn stars in USA. AV does not stand for Adult Video. There is nothing adult about sex. Seriously folks, our idea of god is what makes our generation of fictional works weaker. We created the PG-13 film. Basically a slap in the face to give adults and kids something to watch together. I mean how dumb is that? They show one boob, or one profanity and instantly the movie becomes rated R, or whatever. Remember the Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets? You go and watch his movies, and tell me you can find all kinds of things that would make people start complaing. People needs to grow up and accept fiction for what it is. ------- If people don't have nothing for the gere, they need to not say anything about it. Like I am not into sports, music, and politics. However there are some things that I have to be apart of. Then one of those characters will retort me, and give a reason to admire it, even for it's flaws.

AV stands for Audio Visual, as in AV model. Pornography, is just images of peoples bodies hanging out all over the place, like a pair of turtles gone wild. Take the Girls gone wild, all you see is just women having sex with no context, or admiration for the women at all. Then they pull out a bunch of different interests, in sex that has nothing to do with sex.
I am talking from back in the 1960's-1990's when television stars was practically equal to AV models.
Take Adrienne Barbeau for example.
Or Michelle Phillips
Av is like what I showed above but there is sex scenes involved. Just because something has a couple of sex scenes does not make it pornography.
Just as with, cartoon sextoons is not equated to animated stories involving sex.
Also in AV they block out the private area's. While some do show, it. It is still common.
