Its time I finally played this game, the final Ys game in my library that has yet to be completed. I even pulled out the old toshiba to put myself in the correct "era" haha. I will keep posting back here as I get through the game.

I'll have this thread bookmarked. If you get stuck or need help, I should respond relatively quick. I love the hell out of this game! (and totally wish I owned Expert)

Well I have put almost 2 hours into the game, and I am really liking it. There are come game engine "difficulties" that I have to get used to, such as jumping into other sprites and Adol will "shift" if I jump down some stairs. The music is very different compared to other Ys games. Its more soothing and calm in a way, and it doesn't get your heart pumping. My only gripe with the game is how damn easy it is. I polished off the first boss in 5 hits. I may be a little over-leveled though, because I always do the same thing at the beginning of an Ys game. I fight and fight until I can afford the best armor, and then I tread on to defeat evil. Problem is the best sword was 36000 gold!!!! I got to stop for now, but I can't wait until tomorrow.

I tried it once and it did nothing. Mabey Ill use it in a field and try killing myself the next few screens over.

Quick save only creates "halfway points" -- if you die, you'll return to all stats, etc. you had when you quick saved. As such, quick save is not a permanent way of saving the game and should only be used if you're in an area where you're likely to die. If you did it correctly, you hear "ding-dong-ding-dong" and the screen will fade before resuming normal gameplay. Then if you die, you return where you quick saved. It's like using temporary save states which automatically load upon death. So shall end my explanation. I hope this helps.

If the game is too easy, try Expert. WAY harder. I found it on ebay for $100 complete, but thats not including the shipping. Thats too much for my budget.

I bought Ys V Expert on Yahoo Japan for about 2000 yen (20 usd). It is ridiculously overpriced on Ebay, as with most Japanese games.

I didn't go veeery far in Ys V, but I played through the first two bosses of the game in both versions (normal and expert) and didn't really notice any difference in the difficulty. But I may be remembering wrong, since that was a long time ago.
Also: Since the translation won't ever come out, I decided I'll play Ys V until the end too! This year.

Ok well I put a few more hours into the game today.
Got magic finally, and spent some time leveling that up too. I found that tapping the R button worked much better than holding it.
I ended up at a swamp level. I have only ever liked one swamp level, and thats the one from Chrono Cross. This one is right up there too. The music was AWESOME, and the bad guys jumping out of the water was totally unexpected. Only complaint about the area was that door. How the hell would you know to hit A X Y B without a faq???
The cave had lots of treasure which brought up the old "item" jingle a few too many times. It made me think I was playing a Metroid game (haha I really want to debate this later!!). Did anyone else get annoyed by that little girl and her 2 pedophile henchmen?
Now Ramzen field really brought me back to the old days. The first screen gave me the same "yeah dude" feeling as when first marching on in Ys 1. I was a little upset to see recycled bad guys, but at least they drop a shitload of gold. Best part of Ramzen once again is the music, simply breathtaking.
After a bit of wandering I ended up at some waterfall.....and fell down it 11 fucking times!!!! The faq I am using is not very descriptive and I ended up taking the wrong "North" path. Faq says there is one...but there is two. Damn waterfalls for no damn reason....waste of time I tell you!!
So I end up in this town and some old bag starts haggling me. Being the pure essence of good I happily shell out 500 bucks, only to have her run off and give it to that runt and her two henchmen. Not only does she have Bebop and Rocksteady working for her, but she is whoring out old ladies for her own end. I really can't wait to battle it out with her!
Next I was off to the Sabe ruins, which blew my mind away. This is a SFC game, and the attention to detail was amazing. Falcom really spent a ton of time mapping and tiling this dungeon. Great level design, and of course great music, easily make this the best dungeon yet. I ended up riding that raft a few times, because I didn't know you had to hold "right" on the d-pad....man am I dumb. I ended up finally encountering slow down, but it took over 3 hours so I am pretty impressed. It was the room with the 4 fire dudes, and it happend again with the 4 statues. Seems like the engine can only optimally handle 4 sprites at a time. What really made this dungeon: A semi hard boss!! I even had to heal, and the bastard took over 15 hits at 60 dmg a piece.
I really wish I knew Japanese, or at least had a script to this game. The scene after with Rije and Dorman, really confused the hell out of me. Did he dump her after a few good nights? Did she turn him down because she has a thing for red head dudes? or perhaps they were discussing how the Seattle Seahawks are going to win the Super Bowl this year. Regardless, something is up with those two, and I will keep an eye out.
My quest leads me back to the all familiar waterfall.....and I end up falling 3 more times. My girlfriend finally came home about that time, so I called it a day.
Apart from my friend "the waterfall", I would have to say that this is really turning out to be a great experience. I have been longing for a good old school game to wake up the "young" gamer in me.

I'm pretty sure Atsushi Fukai made the same connection. Except he used the Metroid title theme and the feena/Ys title theme. I love these interesting connections though. Pikkard/Picard, the item get themes, "Zelda on crack"... it's just awesome! Back on topic: If you loved the theme of Ramzen Fields, just you wait. This game has at least three more great tunes going for it. Getting past the waterfall area takes a bit of practice, but you should know that everything is laid out in a way that you're not *expected* to make those seemingly impossible jumps. It just looks that way, especially on the final screen.

Me too. Just wait 'till you get to the desert!! There are some INSANE tunes there! Easily the best in the game - and in the entire Ys series!!

FM-77 seriously knows what s/he's talking about. Desert tunes are AWESOME! Especially the canyon/mountain pass ones not far from there.

It's great seeing all the Ys V love in this thread, I was a little disappointed before as I haven't seen a whole lot of praise for the game. I've been into it and waiting for the patch since 2003, but there's something to be said about playing the game on real hardware. That my friends, is simply a MUST. Fields of Gale, Ramzen Plains, and that little mountain pass area are all memorable experiences; somebody was right when they compared those moments to hearing First Step Toward Wars for the first time. There's simply nothing like popping your Ys cherry. The first time you play any Ys game, it's like a sudden rush of euphoria. That feeling you get while eating chocolate. It's like Ys releases all these endorphines that build up, and suddenly you FEEL the love. There's no experience like it in the world.

I am fighting Dorman right now, and I gotta tell you I am glad I stopped leveling. The game is much harder, and much funner. Am I close to the end?

Very, but you have one massive (and I mean HUGE) dungeon left before the end. The finale is killer! Just wait until you hear the last song, it's a hoot!

Yeah, Ys V contains the usual MASSIVE THUNDER-NINJA DUNGEON OF DOOM, as Ys games used to, back then. Now, it's just that dungeon, they cut away all the pre-final dungeon stuff in Ys Origin.

Yeah I am going through it now, and it really does feel like a big Ys end dungeon. The music in this game has been super awesome, especially the desert.
I really hope someone can fill me in on the major jist of the story...I get most of it but I am not sure why some stuff is happening. Ill summarize after I beat the game tonight. I am also going to try finishing on level 14, so hopefully it will be a tough challenge. The last few bosses have been hard so I think my plan is working. It almost defeats the purpose of getting Ys 5 Expert, except the kick ass boxart.
