I finally checked out the Afro Sergeant vid and I thought it sounded awfully similar to オレはビートマニア!お前は何マニア? from beatmaniaIIDX:
Turns out they were both done by Dance*Man!

Ahh, the golden days of J-pop. Miles above most crap we get these days.

There's SOME good modern J-pop (case in point: Mizuki Nana), but most of the stuff that makes it into anime isn't really that great. I don't follow Jpop much outside anime because I am not at all interested in Pop music in general. Maybe the best of it just doesn't make it to the shows.
Also, I sorely miss the awesome J metal anime songs (Saint Seiya, Outlaw Star, Brain Powerd) that gave way to generic Jrock crap with people who can't sing to save their lives. Where are the days when X Japan did anime songs ;((
Thankfully, there's still some original music used for anime once in a while. Examples would be the Zetsubou Sensei OPs, and this (a favourite OP from one of the best shows on 2009; love setting it for my alarm clock):

I guess it not being officially licensed and distributed has sth to do with it. It's also pretty old, so by now only the hardcore fansub audience knows of it... Myself, I found out about it from a Korean friend who watched it on TV as a kid.

The latest Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood OP is pretty damn awesome. Gotta love Bones and their ability to turn anything they touch into raw brilliance.

D: Since we were talking about KOR in another thread, it got me hunting down some of the OPs and EDs. I've always like these ones (songs only. Don't care about the actual videos): Another series!!! URUSEI YATSURA!! Also posting cuz their songs are awesome. I liked UY music, yes I did. Strange but true: I got into both the Urusei Yatsura and KOR TV series through their OVAs. :P

So I recently picked up the first half of Maison Ikkoku on the cheap, and after 3 episodes... erm, I'm beginning to wonder why this show is so beloved! (: I think I liked MI because it was a Takahashi thing. ^^ I can't remember much from it other than Yotsuya or whatever that weird guy's name is. And Kyoko too, I guess. I remember as much of KOR as I do MI. I only watched the OVAs, 1st movie, and few episodes though. I'm so happy about what happens to Hikaru in the 1st movie! XD Annoying, clingy girls need to be treated like that more often! HA!

So I recently picked up the first half of Maison Ikkoku on the cheap, and after 3 episodes... erm, I'm beginning to wonder why this show is so beloved! Because it was one of the first romantic dramedy shows like that. Touch was also pretty famous and painful to watch by modern standards, too.

Actually I sat through and watch this, its pretty cool show. The storyline started very simple and got extremely dark near half way.

I didn't see anyone else post it yet, soooo~
God, that opening really makes me miss hand painted animation frames. 00 may look awesome in HD, but Stardust Memory will always have some of the finest animation in all of Gundam.
And hey, if live action is okay, then-
You can skip to about 0:35 to see the intro in full. It may not have been my favorite Rider series, but damn if that intro wasn't classy. Alive a Life is a perfect song for an OP~

I just don't like the characters in Maison Ikkoku. The main character is a complete and utter idiot, and all the side-characters are completely insensitive jerks, aside from the main girl! I much prefer the characters in KOR, from what I've seen, as every one of them instantly seems to have a likable, interesting personality, from the main characters all the way down to the side-characters. And that's a must for me, in this kind of show. -Tom I'm not a huge fan of the MI anime either, but the manga is one favorite... Yes, many of the characters are jerks, but it's one of the only manga that I've read (and I've read hundreds) where the characters actually have meaningful growth and change though out the series. So, don't discount the manga, it really is worth a look.

My apologies if this was posted before, but it totally deserves a double-post if it's getting one!

Brave Police J-Decker opening and ending:
The ending is tied with Gunbuster's as my favorite ending theme.

Fast forward by monkey Majik. Opening one for Nurarihiyon no Mago. This series is the first in a while to keep me excited and optimistic for new entries.
I love the overall feel and flow of the animation, and I really love how it mixes the looks of japan's classic culture with their modern culture, not to mention their mythology.

And this one..Sunshine by Monkey Majik. Also Nurarihiyon no Mago.
This opening's just got that laid back, lets go hang out with our friends on a summer day, kinda feel all over it. I love it too. ^_^
