I'm sorry if this subject was brought up here before, but is there any links/news about the Ys IV dubbing patch?

The sad fate of this project is sad. T_T
It was delayed indefinately, as something or such happened. Justus got a life of his own or something, or something about his studio, or something about the voice actors, or perhaps more on NightWolve. Regardless of the reason, there is no progress. It is kaput.

Excuse my ignorance guys, but what about having subtitles instead? I don't mind Japanese voices at all (Which IMHO I think the original voices are far superior than any fan group effort will ever reach!) I'm not sure about how difficult adding subtitles to a PC engine game, anyone got any ideas?

Its not something you ever see, and I think its because you have to hard sub text into a video format and then recompile it to play properly. The file size would change, ether rendering the game too big for one disk, or the current English patch would not be compatible. I remember having to get someone to give me there own .iso of the game, because when I ripped mine it was a tad too large.
Great Idea, and if were to come into fruition then great. Honestly, I think its easier to replace the vocal tracks with English ones, as its only a matter of creating a new .wav.

It's not a video format. Unlike Mega-CD, PCE does not use video files. The cutscenes are coded.
Adding subtitles is an impossible task. It cannot be done.
This is something that will never happen.

Really??? Wow I assumed they were built just like Sega CD games, but if they are coded then yeah its damn impossible.

Actually, it's not impossible, as currently, one of the PCE coders(can't remember if it's Chris Covell or Dave Shadoff) is working on adding subtitles to Far East of Eden Ziria. However, they have to use the CD version, because the Super CD version uses up the adpcm track(if I understand correctly) to make it load faster, but with the CD version, the adpcm track isn't filled up with extra data, so they are able to code it into the cinemas. That's about all I can remember at the moment.
When it comes to Ys 4, I don't know how possible it is. It can be done, one way or another, but, how much of the adpcm track is taken up, is beyond me, since that game clearly uses that track for audio at various points.

Why not just make an app, appart from the game or from the emu, that loads the subtitle files? It could identify on the memory when the video process beggins and ends and launch the subtitle, just like the movies subtittles plugins. I think this is a easier solution, dont you all think the same as me?

Well, yes, if such a thing is viable. o.o For example, if you know a software that's user-friendly that can do that.
But I at least don't know any software that could pull that off.
