Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt set aside Columbus Day in 1934 as a Federal holiday.
seems to still be a fedral holiday. as for it being a national holiday it lost that status back in the late 80s- early 90s area. the replacement holiday that got the national status was Martin Luther King Jr.
