Hey Ranzor, could you PM that save file to FM-77? I bet FM-77 would appreciate it, whoever/whatever that is.

Hi Guys well no bad news ...the troubles have a simple solution. When downloading FM-77 files i was surprised by the very little weight of the files themselves... so i suspected a trouble..since the original dds file are heavier. I fastly found the reason... since I'm working on the other Ys games ( Ys VI and Ys Origin) I easily figured out what is wrong. The trouble is caused by two facts: 1) Maybe Fm-77 didn't change the alpha channel in the original dds, that's why you can see the old original japanese shadows cutting the new english strings 2) FM-77 used the wrong dds compression while saving the files. As to the point 2): the original .dds files are 32bit -A8R8G8B8 dds file, that is to say 32 bit files with 8 bit for every colour: A 8 bit, R 8 bit, G 8 bit, B 8 bit. FM-77 compressed them using the DXT3 dds compression. This resulted in a bad displayed dds on the screen with wrong trasparent and masked areas. I'm telling out this not to blame FM-77, he had a cool idea... I got it too but he did the stuff before me I want only to explain you why of theese errors . I really want to thank you FM-77 for his idea and efforts over them... they only need a litle improvement. Since i'm really experienced in this kind of matters I can truly assert that the causes are the ones I listed above. Moreover.. the font used in the mural is different from the one used by NW and co in the english patch. So FM-77 if you want I can compress them for you once done... if you prefer to do them by yourself just create new 512x128 file with black background. Then write the mural strings in every one of them. Create the alpha channel with the same strings with a white glow around the strings, and the save them in the correct dds format that is to say 32 bit- A8R8G8B8 compression. If you are using photoshop just open the original file: in the channel section you can see what I mean... there is an alpha channel. If you compare yor good translated graphics you'll see that the alpha channel is still with the japanese strings. According to my experience the alpha channel of the original dds files is locked so it's easier to create new files with the steps listed above and then save them with the right dds compression. Good idea and good work anyway. Bye Bye PS also TILE_000.dds was compressed with the wrong DXT3 compression...just use 32bit-A8R8G8B8 compression for it,too

Well I am glad the problem was simple enough to identify. It all means rubbish in my eyes, but hopefully someone will be able to fix it.

Moreover.. the font used in the mural is different from the one used by NW and co in the english patch. The font that was supposed to be used for the mural texts in NightWolve's and Deuce's English patch is called "Ringbearer" (I know because I suggested it). They made English mural text graphics by using that font, but I don't know if the graphics were ever given to anyone (Wyrdwad?). By the way, the "Ringbearer" font is also used in the current Ancient Land of Ys banner on the top page. You mean the one used for the Lord of The Ring Series? LOL.... well i think they used another one since it seems to be quite different. BTW...i'll try to track the font used. Bye Bye

Ha ha, I never meant for this to be a serious completion of the Ysf translation. It was just a quick and dirty job that I did in less than 30 minutes. Well, I will look into this tonight and hopefully make it work just right.

Damn it, I have been fiddling with this now and I don't really understand how these alpha channels work. I did manage to make all the text appear visible in the game, but in addition to the text, you also get a black square around it. It looks ugly, but at least all the text is completely visible (in fact, with the blackness around it - it's even more readable than it is supposed to be, hehe). I will give up on this now, as I am completely unfamiliar with Photoshop CS3 which this computer has. I will try more when I return home. But the main reason I am giving up now is because this damn monitor only supports 1024x768! How could ANYONE can do serious work in this envoriment!? Also, the left CTRL and ALT buttons do not work on this keyboard, and I can't break my habit of using those, so I always keep pressing them, even though nothing happens. Annoying! This was supposed to be a quick and dirty project. I didn't plan for this to happen.

Hello, i follow the Ys - series quite a time, as i have the english translation of oath in felghana. As i am very interested in this, i want to create a german translation patch too, however, some help could be need. I read in several threads that some different people have analysed the game quite a lot, therefore i am asking if anyonce may help me a little? So far i already got stuck with unpacking the main exe, although i could first get rid of the upx. However, it seems there are still some obfuscation and protections left. Is there any chance that some of you may lend me a hand and help me a little? As far as i know, quite a few people would like to get a german translation of the game too. Really hope someonce can help me (i already tried to contact nightwolf and deuce, but havent unfortunately got an answer yet). So any help is welcome (how to actually unpack the game completly, in which files text is stored and so on). Hope someone can help me.

Sorry, the author of the YsF patch will never help you with anything. Doppiapunta on this board wanted to make an Italian version of the patch, but got no help.
Then he went on to make his own patch, so I advice you to contact Doppiapunta instead. He is willing to help people out making translation patches in other languages.

Hello FM-77, thank you very much for your reply. I will write doppiapunta an email.. Too bad NightWolf and Deuce wont help anyone (or at least NightWolf, as i am more interested in the reversing part). @fm-77 and wyrdwad: I am not really sure, are you both translators or also 'game reversers'? May i send you also an email with a few questions?

Here I am. Well nice to meet you Unix. I have to say you that you won't get what you want trying to reverse the english patch since the author did some advanced hacking and he used a dll hooking technique. So text are not reimported inside the original packages but they are called on the fly while the game goes. BTW.. I can help you trying to extract the original text so you can translate it from japanese. About the english text.. I still don't want to take it or to extract it even if I'm able to do so. I don't really want to use NW and deuce patch since it's a their work. I prefer to use the original game text and then to work over it. Just wroe to me if you need any help, suggestion, tip. I'll be glad to help you. Bye Bye

Hello doppiapunta I wrote you two (?) days ago an email, hope you got it (I used your emailadress in your profile). I think you missunderstood me, i dont want to reverse nightwolfs patch, although i thought about it. As i am really interested in reversing in general, i prefer it anyway to reverse the game itself and learn that way and improve myself. Also i agree with you, that it was surely a hard task nightwolf and deuce did, therefore i wouldnt take their work and 'steal' from them. Currently i am building up a small website.. it would be really cool, if you could help me a little with reversing the original game, so that i can get more details (such as where the text is located/ how to actually ex/ import it etc.). In recent days i read quite a lot about this stuff and i am getting always more and more interested, therefore i am very sure, that it wont be one of the never-finished projects which occur really often. When i am finished with the website I will PM you the adress and send you some more details. I really would much appreciate your help. Thank you very, very much.

Hi^^
Sorry but how do you install the translation patch once downloaded?

Ask Nightwolve, I am sure he would love to help you with that problem.
Or you can read the Read Me that came with the patch, or you can open the .exe and follow the simple instructions.
Install the game, open the patch, do what it asks, bingo, YsF in English.

OK I downloaded it, overwrited the "data" file in my game directory with the "data" file from the patch archive and when I play the game it's still...in japanese. I'm quite lost...

EDIT: I'm going to change the name of this topic, I think, so as to avoid confusing anyone else. "Re: Ys: The Oath in Felghana 100% English translat" Yeah I'm totally confused now I didn't even know FM-USER was still working on that patch.
