Why would anyone use a D-pad for Ys games? Just go for the analog stick! I actually played Ys I & II Complete using just the d-pad. I liked its level of precision over the analog sticks for those games. I also used the d-pad when I first played Napishtim for PS2. And then since then I only use the analog sticks on the dual shock controller.

I tore through Ys I & II Complete by attacking diagonally. Sometimes it wouldn't work but most of the time striking diagonally in those games is in your favor.
I found doing Napishtim's dash jump easier on a d-pad since there's less of a dead zone on the digital pad instead of an analog stick. And in Felghana, aiming a fireball straight ahead against Gabalan is much easier when you can hit "pure" up instead of some gradient of up-ness. I still sometimes miss perfectly good shots because I didn't hit up clean enough on a stick.
