Since this seems to have been stalled forever, has the 80% patch been released? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I have a friend who has done rom-hacking for translation projects before and he might be able to help...
But.. won't do any good unless I can get a hold of the patch and preferably the extraction/injection scripts that exist so far...

Sad truths spoken here today. I mean no insult to anyone, but the fact of the matter is that the project is pretty much gone. Deuce did his job, and I'm sure that he did a wonderful job. His translations are excellent. Gideon Zhi has pretty much moved on at this point. AGTP is pretty much bent on the SRW series right now. I have contaced Deuce about the script, and Gid about helping with text insertion. Both went unanswered. The list of current projects is getting bigger and bigger. Gid would have to be really bored to go back to Ys V. Again, I don't mean this to be an insult to anyone. We can all understand. How many of us have unfinished projects. Half written novels or fanfics. Half completed games. Sometimes we just find ourselves interested in something else. If we can get Gideon Zhi on an Ys kick, and get him really into it, maybe we'll see Ys V. Till then, I'll just dream.
*sigh* yeah, I'd hate to have to bug people to re-translate stuff that has already been translated by someone else... but if I have to... but before I bother someone to translate the text I'll need to see if I can find someone who can prove they can re-insert the text back into the game correctly. If I am able to accomplish this myself or with the help of someone else, finding a translator shouldn't be too hard for me...
Edit: But wait... doing some more searching.. this is a much newer project than the one from 1999 that has long been dead. I wouldn't give up on these AeonGen guys just yet... but I'm doing some poking around.
I spoke to the guy doing the rom-hacking for Ys V and he is indeed about 80% done.
"Ys 5 is a beast of a game." "Basically, there are no pointers." "All of the text is hardcoded into compressed blocks, complete with loading code executed from ram." "It's a gigantic mess." "I've hacked the game to allow for a *lot* more text in the available space, but there are a few problems." "1) As stated, unhacked text (mostly menu interfaces) does not work with the new system, for a variety of code-related reasons." "2) The current display buffer isn't large enough to allow for a full window of text; anything past 30-something characters in the window starts to glitch out." "Both of these are certainly tackleable issues, but they need time, effort, and motivation, all of which are at a premium for me at present." "Honestly? I wouldn't bother unless you're an absolute wizard at 65816, reverse engineering, data compression and screwball workarounds"
Anyways, short version is, I believe they will eventually do it, and they are indeed at about the 80% mark. These sort of projects *do* take time people. From the whining in this forum I thought they had taken way longer than they actually really have. I got confused and thought this was the same project from 1999 in my above post.
I am sure if you guys really suck up to Wyrdwad, enjoy his upcoming but really far away YsO patch, and send him free games in the mail, he would probably help out with some of the translation. He hasn't played the game, and I am sure he would be willing to do it if he was sent Popolocrois action figures, or an Opoona plushie. Stay away from Judgement ring clocks, or Final Fantasy XIII posters
What we as a community need is simple. Someone who knows Japanese needs to play through the game, translate each text box that comes up, and type it out. It would be in the same manner as the DoY movie scene translations, or the Lunar Magic School one. In essence, it would be a script that you can read while you play the game. This is a daunting task, and it would take some time, but I would rather have that than nothing. The game is nefariously short (it is an Ys game after all), and its the only game in the series that hasn't had a proper translation. I would love to know how the game progressed, how the characters interacted with each other, and what the god damn story is about. One can only hope, and I keep my fingers crossed that someone will take up the task.
I did forget to mention that in my former post. The technical issues Gid was having with the text reinsertion. One thing that I know he would not do, is back down from a challenging project. It's just (as he apparently stated himself) time and motivation are in short supply. I think it's time that we all learned a few things about hacking and tried to help out.
At this point, I'd also be happy with a translation in .txt format or something. It's not exactly the most elegant, no, but hey! The game's getting close to 15 years old, it's not getting any easier to hack, and the translation work's supposed to have been done a while ago. Kinda frustrating, but there's not much else to do about it.
.......... I am reading on with interest on this subject as I really wanna enjoy Ys V as much as possible (If only for the story).....
I, myself could never do the translation any justice however I do have some rudimentary skills in this area. My query/plea is really the same as most peeps. If we have an 80%/50%/20% complete hack then why can't it be made public?? If only to show what has been done so can others can maybe jump on to get it completed.
Most evenings for me are pretty boring and straightforward affairs and despite my 'skill level' I personally would be happy to take charge of any aspect of the project that is offered to me.
From a personal point of view, If i have something that would benefit people on any level I would totally be willing to share it. Even if it wasn't complete. Maybe I am been harsh-sounding because of my desperation to get an english version out there but it seems so... well...... strange to not have whatever work is complete out there for someone to enjoy or even take charge of.
We all lead busy lives but if we all put 'something into the pot' regarding this issue then surely our collective forces could produce something worthy of attention..?
In circumstances like this I usually miss the point quite dramatically so I am happy to be put straight on things but everyone seems to agree that there is a translation there at 'whatever' stage of completion it is..... So lets make it public (or even keep it among the 'fans' *shrugs*) or at least lay down some source/pointers/whatever on getting it progressed.
!! I long for Ys V in English !!

I just want to clarify a few questions and strong misconceptions here.
First and foremost, this project is by no means dead. Yes, it may not be a priority at present, but that does not mean that I have given up on it. (In fact, Deuce nags me about it once every few months.) I fully plan on getting back to it at some point within the next twelve months or so, and hopefully sooner at that - but I have other priorities that will keep me occupied through July at the very least.
I also work a full-time job, and manage to cram my 40 hours into three days. This leaves me the rest of the week free, yes, but it also leaves me completely exhausted by the end of it, and half of those days are spent recovering - sometimes simply just lying on the couch refreshing forums, not even doing anything. This is a large reason why AGTP hasn't been as productive in recent years as it has been in the past.
Second, the "80%" number is an aggregate estimate based on the total work that needs to be done versus the total work that has been done so far. It may not even be accurate - 70 or 75 might be closer to the mark, I'm not even sure anymore - but even if it were, it doesn't mean you could load up the game and play through 4/5s of it front-to-back as if it were a finished product. What we have is an unstable, unplayable mess - one that has seen significant progress, including a full dump and reinsertion of the narrative text and including a full (if unedited) text translation.
If that were all there was to it then all the better, and with some games that's the case, but unfortunately Ys 5 has Issues, and resolving those issues is largely a question of making it so that the game doesn't barf at you when you get cornered by the guards in Xandria right off the boat, for instance. Or so it doesn't crash when you try to open a menu. Mind you I have a whole pile of good-looking screenshots - about thirty or so of them - but I feel it would be disingenuous and inaccurate to post them while the game remains in such an unplayable state. On a brief aside, one of the earlier posts in the thread quoted me as listing off a bunch of technobabble about the things wrong with the game. Of the links above, the first is symptomatic of too many characters being printed in the text window, and the second is an instance of unhacked text causing the game to blow up in the player's face. Nasty business.
As far as a text-file translation is concerned? With the current dump it's really not feasible. The game data storage is pretty nuts; it basically stores each "area" or "map" individually - that is, what loads when you walk off one screen, have the picture go black, then have it come back on in the new zone. All of the text associated with each map/zone/area/whatever is stored clumped together, without regard to plot sequence. A lot of games do this, frankly, but Ys 5 is exceptionally nasty about it. Since each of these segments is contained in a unique compressed block, the text ends up spread across 73 text files. A mess, in other words.
Next, we are *not* just a suparobo site! It's true that SRW is a big focus, but it is not the be-all and end-all of my motivation, and generally speaking I have *other* people doing a lot of SRW work (months' or even years' worth) while I do other things. Of the three games I have planned for the next few months, two are regular RPGs and one is a strategy/RPG, none of which are even remotely related to SRW (although one kind of plays like it.) Each Super Robot Wars entry is a huge freaking Goliath in terms of necessary work, and in recent years I've taken to outsourcing the script editing jobs so I can get other stuff done in the meantime. Much has been said about the text volume in the recent XSEED Sora no Kiseki announcement; current-gen SRWs are, on par, about the same size as one of the games in that trilogy. Alpha alone is the size of *all three* based on Deuce's estimate! And that's being edited by someone else, freeing me to do work on other things. (We wouldn't want the text to look like this, now would we? Profetised, indeed!)
Finally, in the last year or two I've been making a distinct effort to shrink the project list. We're under 40 announced, and though we have a few unannounced, they're either small games or have not had much (if any) progress made on their development. In the coming months you'll see the Active category continue to shrink, and with each game that migrates to the Completed list, the closer Ys 5 gets to being a priority. I still can't say when that will be, but hopefully it'll be soon.
I'm sorry for keeping everyone waiting for so long, and I wish I had better news to offer, but at this point all I can really offer is the much-bandied-about "be patient" cliche, and hope for some understanding. It will come, eventually. Just when that will be, I currently cannot say.
