In Febuary 2009, an incredible PS3 game was released in Japan and Asia and was seldom even mentioned on this side of the world. It's called Demons Souls, and it will fuck you up. The game is in completely in English, with text and voices... and because it's a PS3 game, it's not region locked at all. You can even use the online play, if you register an Asian account and login with it. It should be noted that only the Asian version of the game is in English. If you buy the Japanese version, you will be disappointed. The plot is very much like a darker version of the original Ys story, actually. Prosperous kingdom harnesses the power of magic until one day it causes demons to emerge and wreck everyones shit. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, they entrust relics to six priests and create a refuge dimension where they hide from the demons and desperately try to turn back the tide. Naturally, I made an Adol character. Here's a trailer: www.gametrailers.com/player/43990.htmlHere's a place where you can import it if everyone is interested: www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-36pw.htmlOne thing you need to understand though before you get into this is that the game is fucking HARD. Now to hardcore Ys players, that's probably not a deal breaker. I just want to make sure everyone understands. It is COMPLETELY unforgiving. It's not just that you die alot, it punishes the SHIT out of you for dying too. You really gotta survive and be EXTREMELY cautious in your endeavors. One slip and you're off a cliff, or have an axe in the back of your head (or several), or are devoured by an enormous gibbering horror. And it's all down hill from there. None the less, it's an amazing game. Highly recommend.

The way you put it got me somewhat interested.
And a decent game for PS3? What?? xD Does that exist?
I'm still going to search for some trailers and in-game footage before I decide hunting down this guy though.

I remember Wrydwad put a trailer on this game back in the FFXIII topic. Still I am too poor at the moment.

65 dollars...barely more than a retail release game in the US anyway. I'll look into it when I have the money to spare. Sounds sorta like Diablo as well (short of not having a mouse, anyway)?

There's definite similarities. It's a very different experience from Diablo, though. The melee combat is incredible. The bosses are just crazy.

The trailer for this kicked serious ass, but I'm a little worried that it'll be too FRUSTRATINGLY hard for my tastes. I still wanna try it, though. It looks amazing. -Tom The best way to play the game is to treat it like you're actually trapped there trying to survive. Don't do anything in the game you wouldn't do in real life. When I was playing like that, I was doing fine. When I got complacent and started acting like I was some sort of badass, I started getting wrecked all over the place. It's really not a 'trial and error' type game, because you get punished so much for the 'error' portion. A better way to think of it is 'use your head and don't do anything stupid'. Anyone can avoid traps after springing every single one of them and memorizing their locations. It's trickier to avoid them the first time, but that's really the goal here. The real ass-kicker is that there's no way to just load game after getting jacked up, because it auto saves pretty much every second, as absurd as that sounds. Even turning your console off in the middle of a fight or right as you die will not save you. It's a pretty elegant way of keeping you immersed, though. You can level up stats and upgrade your equipment (though the benefits are very subtle; not final fantasy-ish), so if you're cautious and do the leg work you'll be able to build up an advantage against the opposition.

Yes, I'm getting more convinced too... But not convinced enough! Yet. xD

Based on the trailers I've seen it certainly looks amazing.
I'm curious about the system though. How exactly does leveling etc. work. I've heard something like, when you die you loose the exp, money etc. that you're currently carrying. The word currently makes me think that you have to "spend" your exp somewhere to actually get boosts. But, the amount of reading up I've done on this game is pretty limited. ^^

The word currently makes me think that you have to "spend" your exp somewhere to actually get boosts. But, the amount of reading up I've done on this game is pretty limited. ^^ That's basically accurate. Spend it or risk losing it. But you have to be at a trainer to spend xp so, if you're out and about and die you'll probably have a decent amount saved up. It'll be at the spot you died, and if you can get back BEFORE you die again and touch the spot where you died, you'll get it back. But that's tricky, considering your max HP will be cut to 50% and the area will be crawling with monsters all over again. If you die again before you get your stuff back, tough luck. =/ There's no 'levels' per say. You level up attributes. Strength, dexterity, intelligence, luck, etc. But EVERY trait raises physical defense a tiny bit per level, so it actually gives you the freedom to mess around with different attributes rather than having to power game them all into one or two stats. Also, raising your strength doesn't help nearly as much as you'd think. Several levels worth would net you less than a decent equipment upgrade. However, strength is necessary if you want to use the larger weapons and shields etc. I think they found a good balance in the stats. Of course the game is still harder than shit even if you're totally on top of your character progression.

Sounds more or less like how I thought it would be. Games where you explore for a bit, go back and upgrade, press a little further, go back and upgrade... and so on.. usually sit well with me. And though the risk of loosing "everything" if you die is harsh I'd expect this adds a whole lot to the nerve and feel of the game. Makes it interesting.
I'll add it to my list of PS3-games to consider once I can actually afford a system.

This is starting to sound more like a super hard version of Xanadu NEXT, except maybe without the puzzles D:

Saw the trailer on my friend's PS3. Too medieval for my tastes as I can't seem to feel anything Japanese from it. It's like a western medieval arpg.
Reminds me too much of Xanadu Next, with better graphics and perhaps slightly better gameplay.

No no. Xanadu Next is awesome. So Demon's Soul comes off as being a rip off of sorts. See? And Xanadu has a loli girl inside which I doubt Demon's Soul has. (I ain't Lolicon though)

...Every girl I've ever gone out with fits the short and tiny Asian profile. Now I'm worried.

Argh... this game is fucking hard. It beat me down like two nights ago and I just now got back to driving forward. There are some VERY tough bosses. Anyone else out there played this yet?
