Hey everyone! I'm new here and after doing a bit of research I still can't find an answer.
I've played the DS version, but from what I heard, the PC versions are much better. I found some videos on YouTube and this does seem to be the case (for my tastes anyway), I like the graphics and the music more... Which leads me to my question.
I think I've heard two versions of music. One of them seems to be MIDI like, which I wasn't too fond of. If I am planning to get Ys for PC, I'd much better like to play with the other music (to me it sounds more epic and all). I'd really appreciate any help on this and some advice as to what version of Ys I should get.
Thanks! And I'm sorry if this is answered somewhere, I did a quick search first but didn't seem to find anything.

... Well, I don't know where to start. ... First of all, I recommend Ys I-II COMPLETE, though for some weird reason some like to call it "Ys Eternal Complete". Secondly, you heard two kinds of music for the game, right? It's probably because some people use the PCEngine's version of Ys I and II's soundtrack for that game instead, people do that manually. It's considered by many fans of the series the best Ys I and Ys II soundtrack. People can change the music as they like, as long as they know how to do it. So it would be best if you linked us to what you saw/heard on YouTube. Anyway, since you're new to the series and seem to have liked it, I suggest you do some research around these forums and the web in general to know more about it, so that you know some "essential" things.

Right now I can't seem to find the videos with the two differnet versions I have heard, but to give you an idea, in this video is the music I'd like to have when I play: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2fiu1NhVtkSo you say you can change the music manually? So does this mean the game comes with just one kind of music and the differences I have heard are because people have changed the music? It's a bit confusing for me, sorry if I ask too many questions. Thanks a lot for the help, I'll make sure to browse the forums more. EDIT: Okay, in another thread, I have found this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_G_FoarDMoThere are three versions of music here, basically, I like the original more (by original I'm guessing it comes already with the game?) and it seems to be a different version from the music in the video I posted previously. I think I'm making this more complicated than it is in my head, lol.

Ahem, OK, I'll explain all you need to know.
You see, in 1998 Falcom re-released Ys I for Windows PC. It is called "Ys ETERNAL". Then, an year or two later, they re-released Ys II for Windows PC, called "Ys II ETERNAL". Both games DO NOT have english patches or anything.
In 2001, Falcom decided to release another Ys I and II game. It is called "Ys I-II COMPLETE". Essentially, it has both ETERNAL games, however the first game was changed a bit to look more like the second one ("Ys II ETERNAL"), and because of that, "Ys ETERNAL" and "Ys I COMPLETE" are different games, but share many similarities. That one WAS translated to english. And that's the one you should perhaps look for. Oh, also, there's a lot of confusion in that some people think "Ys I-II COMPLETE" is called "Ys I.II Eternal Complete", although it isn't. That's because in-game, on top of the screen it is either written "Ys Eternal" or "Ys II Eternal", and since in the game box it says "Ys I-II COMPLETE", people think it's called a mixture of both names or something. Confusing, I know.
Actually, in that first video link you put here, the original music of the game IS being played. Ys I-II COMPLETE had 2 soundtracks: a WAVE one and an SC-88 one, whatever that means. You can switch between both anytime. So, cheers.
As for the second video, it just shows many versions of the same musics of Ys I, for Ys I was released so many times for so many things.

That was very informative, I understand now, thank you very much for taking your time to write all that! I'll look into Ys I-II Complete then, it seems to be the one I'm looking for.

Well, I was originally gonna make a seperate topic for this but since a similar one is up, I do have a bit of a question regarding the midi tunes contained within Ys I an II Complete.
The Wav files work just fine, but the midis don't seem to work correctly. I don't know if it's because the files are corrupted, but only the percussion beat plays from the midi files, not the melody itself.
Other midi files on my computer play correctly, but the ones including with Complete don't. Is there any cause or explanation for this?

Just a note : Ys II Eternal and Ys II Complete have the same soundtrack (I'm talking about the cd-da/wav music), but Ys I Eternal and Ys I Complete don't ! Actually, I prefer the Ys I Eternal soundtrack over the Ys I Complete one.

Actually, I prefer the Ys I Eternal soundtrack over the Ys I Complete one. Since you've played both, what makes the Eternal soundtrack so much better than the Complete version?

By the way, liquid, don't forget that CD-DA =/= MP3 in quality, so if you end up not liking it, maybe it can be remedied by listening either to the original OST disc or the game itself, whose ST can be listened to directly from any CD player. xD

Thanks a lot Red 'Do! I saw MP83's other thread on the MIDI songs from Eternal (downloaded them...love em..still like GM the best) and that got me really wondering what the Eternal CD-DA tracks sounded like and just to compare it against the Complete WAV tracks.... I downloaded them (didnt need the MIDI files again..but I kept them ) and just gave them a listen now. They are indeed very beautiful...then again it would take a LOT to mess up these already beautiful songs lol. In my opinion...I'm gonna have to side with wyrdwad and say that I think the Complete ones are better. Mind you, as I said, the Eternal ones are very beautiful but I feel the Complete ones sound a little more..."full"...if that makes any sense... Now that I have these great extra soundtracks, I shall go and add them to my collection of Ys files and burn them to my lil Ys Mini CD
