So uh, hi. I'm new here, to an extent. I had been lurking for quite a long time until I decided to register last week, but I couldn't really bring myself to post until early this morning. Obviously, this is not that first post, and I stupidly hadn't noticed this board was for introductions before because of its name. Sad, I know. Now that that's out of the way, I must admit that I am essentially a Falcom newbie. I had played the PS2 port of Ys 6 back when it first came out, and in my childish stupidity I fell in love with it... for about a week. Of course, for that same reason I had no clue there were other games in the series, let alone the fact that it was a Falcom game, and as such it quickly passed from my memory. Long story short, I played the PSP port last year and then went on to try several other Ys titles; by far, my favorite right now is Origin, quite ironic considering I waited to play it due to it being in a language I can barely comprehend. I know some of you might get a very, very bad first impression (even worse than one you'd get just from reading the nonsense preceding this) of me if I say this, but I admit I pirated all the games so far. Thing is, my parents only let me get something more than $5 once every 3 months at most, and there is no way I'd be able to import any game from Japan knowing how my parents feel about these kind of things. Even worse, I'm having an extremely difficult time finding a job, both due to the economic crisis and the fact that I'm barely old enough to flip hamburgers. Sorry this post went downhill so quickly (I actually tried to shorten it as much as I could), but I felt the need to explain myself to a marginal extent. I hope I can fit in around here. Welcome. xD Also, as far as pirating goes, this board's members are overall pretty comprehensive, and I'm 100% your reasoning is very "valid" here. xD Sometimes we CAN'T import the stuff, at all. There have been a few debates around here about all that in the past, so it's OK, especially since practically no one here pirates on a whim. As for me, I'm practically on the same boat as you.  Though the main difference is that I don't earn even a single cent from anyone, and never did. xD But when I can (rare) and am interested, sometimes I manage to do a few purchases abroad with the help of my older brother, who has both a bank and PayPal accounts, both of which I don't, and even can't. (That way I even purchased VMJ and its OST from a member here, for example.) Well, cheers. xD Enjoy your time around here, now as a registered member.  Also, try taking a look in the older entries of the series. Try playing TCD's Ys Book I & II and Ys IV The Dawn of Ys, and SNES' Ys III, Ys IV Mask of the Sun and Ys V or Ys V Expert. |

Haha, I read that yesterday. Pretty awesome stuff. I've actually played through part of Ys I Complete, but I had to stop since I had so many other games to work on. I often tend to get mixed up in dozens of games at once, literally. In fact, back when I first played Origin I had promised myself I would beat it on every difficulty with every character AND get above-average times on all the Time Attack bosses before my birthday, but uh... I kinda started playing the Touhou games around that time and was still hugely active in City of Villains, so that faded away just a bit. I have yet to play II, Wanderers from Ys, either version of IV, or V, but I know a decent amount of background of each (well... except V) to get myself along around here. |

You're good to go then. Also, if you have yet to play Ys III, including OiF, then the lame 1-page-comic I made would be better. Also it's normal for someone to be playing dozens of games, many of which take much longer to be finished or aren't finished at all.  I think that's pretty standard among many of us. |

I totally forgot, but I actually have played Mastiff's localization of Gurumin. Also, OiF was the first PC Ys I played.  I'm going to try to get myself to play Zwei!! and Xanadu Next, and possibly the Brandish PSP port, but it likely won't be for a while. |

Do your parents hate animes or something?! Most people I've met don't even know what it is, so it makes it very easy to be a nerd about this shit without the stigma. Also, Namco Bandai's LoH PSP titles aren't' nearly as bad as Tom and Friends would have you believe. If you can't understand Japanese that is. I would suggest you give them a shot. Just keep in mind that they were mislabeled in America and that the proper order to play them in is actually: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch Tear of Vermilion Song of the Ocean but I admit I pirated all the games so far. I myself have never payed for a Falcom game, or any game in general in the past 7 years (with the exception of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne), so I wouldn't sweat this one bit. I recently tried to talk myself into buying Gurumin, but I just could not do it. |

The translation really is that bad as far as the Gagharv Trilogy is concerned. Having began Tear of Vermillion, despite wyrdy's warnings, I can tell you that a fair portion the dialogue reads horribly. The lines that are in coherent english are often read in staccato, and often feel very blunt, devoid of any real feeling (with the rare exception of a line that reads rather eloquently, and this dichotomy in the translation quality really cheapens the experience as a whole, I'd say). And, of course, there is your fair share of incomprehensible lines. Best example I have so far is what you get to read every time you learn an ability upon leveling up; "[character] was [skill] mastered." First time I saw that... I made a face that no emoticon can recreate. It's just like... wow, really? I can't believe these games went out like this in this day and age; I'd thought we had some kind of standards for translation quality now. But I digress, and yield this point; the alternative, that is, not playing them, is certainly the lesser of two choices. It's a fun little game, and quite pretty, I might add! I just wish these games hadn't been bastardized... or tarnished the name of series. I do so wish I could play Sora no Kiseki in english~ (gogo floofy & co!)

I do remember you mentioning that one. I haven't happened across it yet... or if I did I guess I missed it. =/ Not as grammatically WTF as the level-up message, or your example, but I also like what Muse says outside Tibri, "they was able to steel and loot". Tense, homonyms - it's magical. My friends and I had a good laugh at that one. |

I could use RemoteJoy and Fraps to record some footage for you. Shouldn't be bad quality, since it's basically just outputting the PSP's display to a window on the PC.

Someone should really make a list (video works too) of all the best quotes from the translation. I don't intend to play it (got the Japanese PC versions, I'd much rather play those) but I love reading random engrishy quotes from it  |
