Been playing this since I got it (my thumb hurts. a lot.) and I've just beat Vagullion. Which means from now on it's all new for me, seen as I've never played Ys II before, and never beaten Vagullion!
Anyway, bullet-points: - It's pretty much the same as Complete in terms of design. Those who know Complete like the back of their hand... will know this just as well. - Load times are acceptable. The areas are, of course, relatively large, and the only major load time you get is switching to an entirely new area (Minea to the field, for example) - Graphically the game is fine too. It's been a while since I played the PC version, admittedly, but on my TV I can't really criticise the graphics other than the loss of a bit of clarity on the kanji and a bit of blurriness on the portraits. - Speaking of which, I think you know by now if you like the new style, and of course there's always the old one to switch to if you want. I like the new one, so I didn't. - Musically... it's fantastic. I think there'll still be people who prefer some tracks in another form, but overall this iteration of the OST is awesome. So far my favourite tracks would probably be Palace and Holders of Power, for complete opposite reasons (the former is just beautiful, and the latter... well, it's what you expect. Has me reaching for the volume up button every time, I feel kind of sorry for the people in the next room.)
At the end of the day though, it's still the same game you've played lord knows how many times already, so if you wanted to skip it and just get the soundtrack down the line I wouldn't blame you. If a portable version of exactly the same with awesome new arranges and switchable art is exactly what you wanted though, then this is perfect.

Thanks for the overview, it's pretty much exactly what was expected. When Falcom shells out the soundtrack, or even better, a bundle with the Chronicles and Complete soundtracks, they've got my money.
There's this stupid thing I've been wondering about: do the new portraits retain the eye-blinking animation?

Hey, not sure if you all have seen this yet, but I came across this recently when trying to find some nice artwork scans from the game and was pretty impressed from all the high quality scans and game images they had on that page: bbs.tgfans.com/viewthread.php?action=printable&tid=18571-Thomas

Nice quick write up! It sounds exactly what I was expecting, and hoping, from it....a portable version of Ys I&II Complete with extra artwork and extra soundtrack. I love how the player has the choice of having the new artwork and/or soundtrack or the original PC versions. now THIS is the version of a portable Ys that should be brought to the US! Also from NicoVideo: Ys I Opening Video - You get to hear the new soundtrack version of the opening animation.... Ys I Opening Gameplay Video - Good video showcasing the XMB load of the game and the soundtrack is switched to the new version, so you get to hear the title screen music, town music, and the field music...

Did they make the leveling systems consistent between the two games, or is it the same thing as in the Complete versions (Ys I's max level is 10, Ys II's is 55)?
That's one thing that's always irked me a little about Ys I Complete: you pretty much needed to be at level 10 to kill Vagullion, or have a lot of patience/skill. It seems to take a bit of challenge out of Darm Tower when your level's maxed out all throughout it. Plus, it's a little weird for the leveling systems to be inconsistent between the two games.

I agree with everyone here.
Also, korzic, I do highly believe the levels remained just like COMPLETE. Actually, if I recall correctly, of all Ys I versions, the only one which Adol could get to a level above 10 is the PCE/TCD version. ... Maybe the X68000 version also had more levels (I do recall HP gets as high as 999), but I guess that's it. =s
By the way, in most Ys II versions, the maximum level is around the twenties. However, in Ys II ETERNAL, Ys II COMPLETE and likely in Ys II Chronicles and Ys II DS, it is that different, enabling you to get to level 55. And level 99 in Ys II ETERNAL STORY and Ys II Special. XD

Man I really want to play this. Wish it was released in English. I'm on the fence about importing it

Well, it is really the same game. Run through it with a faq if you need it, and I know I've played it before xD
I'd go for it!

Haven't played the Ys 2 bityet, but Ys 1 still maxes at 10, and I doubt they've changed 2 either.

If anyone wanted pretty boy Fact in-game, tough. He's his old blue horned self.

That artwork is HORRIBLE. xDDDD lol I think it's the worst Dark Fact... not only artwork, but also depiction of any nature ever. Very dumb-looking as well.
... Eh. Total COMPLETE port then. =/ Not interested in the new artworks either. The music, however, leaves me slightly curious.

I agree with the 'Do..ugly artwork. I'm not too big of a fan of the new artwork either but the new soundtrack...a fan I am! At least we get the choice if we want the new stuff or not. I think I'll try the PC artwork and the new soundtrack please! The original PC soundtrack is good too, though... Dark fact's hair seems to keep getting longer with each remake...

Meanwhile, as I jubilantly posted in the spam thread, I've managed to rip the music from Chronicles off the UMD to tide me over until the soundtrack comes out. Considering they haven't even announced a date yet, that's going to be months, and starting up your PSP and loading a save to listen to one track is a major pain in the ass. I'm not going to post the rips here, because there seems to be some kind of tacit understanding that we don't post OSTs, ISOs and the like. Not like Seldane would ever enforce such a thing anyway. Falcom never really seems to care if people listen to the music of the games they've bought though (why else would they have the music for all their PC games in an easily accessible folder in the directory?) so... if anyone here who's bought the game would like a copy of the rips, I really don't mind sending them on. Just throwing that out there

XD I read that the TCD version of Ys II was similar level-wise to the Complete version, so I assumed that Ys I's TCD version would be similar to its sequel (and from the walkthrough on Deuce's site, that seems to be the case). I just find it weird that Falcom would be inconsistent with the leveling systems for the Complete games, and was hoping that they had changed it for this version. Haven't played the Ys 2 bityet, but Ys 1 still maxes at 10, and I doubt they've changed 2 either. Hmm, that's too bad. Aside from a localized English version, making the leveling systems consistent is probably the one thing that could persuade me to buy this version of the games. Oh well.

Well, yes, I think it's neat for those who want COMPLETE on something as handy as a handheld. xD If you are looking for a COMPLETE port that isn't that much of a port, I suggest the PS2 version. xD I love it. LOVE the gameplay. Also, you didn't try the TCD/PCE version yet? I highly suggest you eventually do.

Try the TCD version ESPECIALLY for the soundtrack! It will blow you away, no doubt about it! I've been wanting to play through Complete again for some time now, and since this has come along, it has answered my question. Plus, it'll be good practice for import gaming (Ys Seven ), since I'm very familiar with the game already (of course I will still use a faq[t]) Is there any bonuses that haven't been mentioned, such as differences in balance, or an extra dungeon? If there isn't I don't mind one bit, because this is good enough.

Not that I've noticed, at least. If there was an extra dungeon I think they'd have announced it.
