Note users can retract their votes. Anyway, what the poll asks. Have you finished any Ys IV? At least played it/them? It's one of the best episodes of the whole series. To some, even the very best. However, it didn't get too many remakes and such, so it may not be as famous as some other entries, plus Falcom themselves didn't ever develop an Ys IV game, though they wrote the main script, music etc.. As for me, I have played them. I have played Ys IV SNES many times and at different times, but I recall I finished it only around 2003 or 2004. I also played and finished the PS2 version, which is... not at the same level as the other two versions, or most Ys games for that matter. I played DoY significantly, but didn't finish it. That was in 2006. I was kind of saving my DoY playthrough for when Ys V was translated and patched, but since that won't be happening, I will finally play this gem to the end in the near future. Tell your experiences!

Yeah, played both but only finished the PCE version. And dear GADO Red, you've been missing out! The Dawn of Ys is definitely one of the best entries in the series, it's my favorite Ys game. Completely blew me away. If you liked Ys I&II you'll probably love this game, pretty much everyone that had a portrait makes an appearance (not even death itself can stop a certain woman from doing this ). And some of the npc stories get build upon further, you'll find those two kids that wanted to play together in Ys I running together all happy in DoY for example. Gameplay is the 8-way bump system with proper knockback. The game starts off somewhat slow, but picks up from the fire dungeon onward. Once you reach the desert the game goes into full throttle and pulls the craziest stunts on you, which makes it stand out from the other games. I can't bring myself to spoil the surprises it has, but trust me some of them will make your world turn upside down And the music is awesome. There's like three tracks that weren't on my mp3 player after beating the game. Play it!!!

... I did play it. xD I just didn't finish it. Though it's true I didn't go too far. I went as far as to meet Eldeel, and him showing a certain... important "item" from Ys II. That's around where I stopped. I know, DoY rules. And I may learn this even more. Soon, soon.

I never got to play either version. I tried desperately, but I could never get ANY emulator to play DoY. I've been thinking about playing MotS, but I still need to beat I, II, and VI right now anyway.

I never got to play either version. I tried desperately, but I could never get ANY emulator to play DoY. Magic Engine. You can also try your luck with YAME, but it's not certain you will be able to use it to play CD games properly. Also, for CD games, you need to use a certain ROM. This one, to be precise. For any PCE emulator you use, Magic Engine included, you need it. Actually Magic Engine also has that ROM built in itself. But it doesn't work the way it should.

Magic Engine worked for me too. Though the game crashed a bit into the ending credits, but that's probably because of me having a bad rip. So I sadly never made it into the Developers Room. stopped at the lava area boss. :B Don't give up so fast He's hard but you just need to be patient and play it safe. I can't remember what the trick was to dodging his axes, but you can score some good hits when he transforms.

What Sardien says. Also, that thing in DoY's ending was the developers' room? I read about it once. xD Wow, in total, there are 3 Ys games with such a thing: Ys IV DoY, Ys II Special and Ys ETERNAL. Neat. Anyway, I recently started replaying Ys IV MotS after all those years... now I'm before the final boss. xD I'll just level up once more to maximize my statuses though, before the final battle. Then, onward to Ys IV DoY right away. ~

I had played and finished both before joining here. (my first post) Dawn of Ys was my first import game. It took me a long time to be able to afford to get import games, and once I was able, I knew exactly which ones I wanted to play. I knew first I had to play the rest of the Ys games. After Dawn it was Mask of the Sun, which is great, but Dawn rules beyond the Rulesphere!

All of which are great games, but Dawn of Ys is a much nicer version of Ys IV I think. : )

Well, just finished MotS again yesterday, after about 6 years. I will start a serious Dawn of Ys playthrough within... 10 minutes or so. And stop only after I finish it. I liked replaying MotS, but it was smaller than I recalled and... I thought there were more things going on... but it's still a superb game, as a stand-alone and Ys game. And a must for every Ys fan. Also, something tells me I will go nuts out of happiness with Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys. ... I can hardly wait!!!!

Whoa, clean Brandish covers! That artwork is so beautiful, glad they didn't replace it for the PSP version.

That's one of the very few Ys IV MotS artworks there are. And indeed, it's very nice. ... Hm. Good to see Falcom stickied with DoY's artworks in spite of having MotS artworks as well for their Ys SEVEN "all Yses" picture. Anyway, I'm playing DoY and right now I'm before that boss that stopped nunuu. xD Nunuu! Beat him! ;.; Don't stop playing. I shall even sacrifice a smiley for you. ;_;

Speaking of that art, does anyone know the artist? Because I swear I've seen that style before... ...Oh, yeah, and I guess beat both Ys IVs...

Well, I just finished Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys. In short, there's no room for doubt that, between the two versions, DoY is the one that received the most attention and love, so to speak. The soundtrack is amazing, the artworks and CGs are gorgeous and impressive, the storyline and plot are incredible and also deeper than MotS's, and more connected to Ys I and Ys II, even if slightly. DoY is also a bit bigger. But I have to admit that, as far as... "playing" itself goes, I had more fun with MotS, because it's more fast-paced by a wide margin. But I thought the plot, music and everything else were many times better in DoY. Speaking of the plot, there were things, even if only a few, that I liked more in MotS than in DoY, like Leeza's and Eldeel's roles, as well as Lilia's slightly bigger role. And, speaking of Lilia... I was a bit disappointed with both Ys IVs a bit on that regard... =/ For some reason, I thought Ys IV in general had much more Lilia action and importance. Well, there WAS some of that, but I expected to see them both in a larger scale... =/ I wonder why I expected too much from her. However, I'm not saying it was bad or anything. It's just that I'm a huge Lilia fan. xD Also: Finished Ys IV SFC with English Translation 1.0 Finished Ys IV SFC with English Translation 2.0 Finished Dawn of Ys All of which are great games, but Dawn of Ys is a much nicer version of Ys IV I think. : ) -Thomas Same here. Now I'm like you both, except for the PS2 version. Anyway, I'll still play DoY a bit more, because according to the Developers Room, I missed Leo's set of equipment. xD I'll get it. And lastly, I must say: Ys IV is excelent. They both are fine masterpieces. I think that anyone who considers oneself an Ys fan, both Ys IVs are a must. We all can summarize this chapter of the Ys series with a very infamous sentence: Ys IV rules!

Yes, MotS is very noticeably much more fast-paced, there's no room for doubt there. Actually, DoY is, sadly, even slightly less fast-paced than its Ys Book I & II predecessor, which I really never understood why. However, originally, Ys I & II usually weren't any more fast-paced than that, so it's okay. And it's not like it is, you know, SLOW. xD Plus, it still is quite dynamic, with all the magics, rings, items and whatnot. Also, about the diagonal movement, in my opinion, it doesn't earn that many points. xD But it's welcome.
