Awesome news! I'll definitely need to try it out sometime in the near future, but Celceta comes first.
Just a suggestion, but you should consider making a note on your site about this patch being incompatible with the Expert version, as you'll probably get that question a lot.

My only gripe with Ys V would be the controls. Adol is way too stiff, in comparison to A Link to a Past where Link's movements feel fluid, Adol moves as if rigor mortis is setting in. I like how you can change the color of Adol's hair, he doesn't need to be a red haired swordsmen anymore, he can be a blue haired swordsmen.

Just dropping by to say a big thank you to Gideon. Finally, the whole series in English! Had a little tour of the first town and everything looks great. Well done, man!

I need to note that the hair color change thing is something I was only made aware of today, and as such, the options menu will appear glitchy if you bring it up after unlocking said hair color change thing. It doesn't crash the game though, wonder of wonders, the option itself still functions as expected, and it doesn't destroy any of the game interface the way the Mask of the Sun string overruns did, so I'm filing this one away under medium-priority things to fix. If I manage to keep to a biweekly release schedule as I'm hoping to, I'll push an update out in two weeks with the next major release. Sorry about that.

I don't think I said anything at all in this topic, all this while, but like everyone else, I too was wishing for a Ys V translation patch. I somehow hardly expected it would actually truly happen this soon. A super nice happy ultimate surprise it was to peek in here and.... see this~! A super super thank you to Gideon Zhi and Deuce for making one's day 10 times more brighter with this release~! *tries it out now~~~~!!!*

The save file will still work, right? Also, not exactly the right topic, but I found a typo in Ys IV. Here's a picture of it: View AttachmentEDIT: the picture won't show up here for some reason, but at the last row, isn't that supposed to be "where"? [Middle English er, from Old English r; see ayer- in Indo-European roots.] ere [ɛə] . conj & prep. a poetic word for before.

It's been my dream to eventually get some people together to make a version of Ys 5 for the Turbo/PCE, though, no programmer has showed interest yet, but shouldn't have a problem finding pixelers for recoloring purposes(could probably pull in someone for cinemas). My plan would be to attempt to remake the music to sound more like 1-4. It'd be cool to redo the gamplay mechanics, either to somehow do the bump system(but keeping in the jumping), or make it play more like the newer games.

Oh wow, so it's ACTUALLY done?! I was told about this recently, so I made sure to find the time to come here now and actually thank. So, thank you! And thank you, Deuce, as well! I wonder what are his thoughts now that it's out? He must be pretty pleased about it, as well. By the way, I honestly feel kind of bad for even showing up here, actually: Despite my viewpoint, I guess it's not always ethically correct to criticize certain things, or rather, maybe I was addressing something right, but worded it the wrong way. So I wanted to apologize for that, in case I wronged. No disrespect was ever meant. Because even if it took as long as it did, you did deliver it in the very end. Regarding the patch itself, it's true I was intending to play Ys V Expert with it, but I guess that and the secret hair color thing are really very small problems, because the scope of the patch for me is to make Ys V's events, story and the whole overall experience accessible to English non-Japanese speakers. I'll either play Ys V patched to the end and then move on to Expert, or play a bit of the patched V, then a bit of Expert, accordingly and alternatingly (like do that boss-by-boss). And use the extra hair color on Expert. So that's alright as it is. Heck, I'm just eager to see what the hell the enigmatic Ys V is all about, after all the hype on the story and the mystery for it being the sole series chapter entry untranslated! I'll play this as soon as I get my Ys Origin main playthrough done! (Currently doing it with Toal.)

Because she was originally Lair in the official localisation of Ys book 1 and 2 for Turbo CD. It may be the official Falcom transliteration as well.

Hmm you bring up a good point about the updated terminology. I guess they missed that one or either deuce or Gideon have a soft spot for Lair. There are several members here who prefer Lair. I'm not one of them.
I said maybe. Though I do still seem to recall her name being Lair on their website at some point. It isn't now though. Any oldbies remember?

Lair is a romanization of "REA" used exclusively on Ys Book I & II for the TurboGrafx-16 CD. While also not my favorite, it is just as accurate as Reah, so it's fine. The reason many translation patches stick to that name is because that game was the main initial contact western Ys fans had with Ys, so the naming was intended to be continued on with the patches, many of which were translated by Deuce. Likewise, Dogi was going to continue to be named "Colin", but it wasn't because Ys III on the TurboGrafx changed it back to Dogi before such patches came (and "Colin" is a bit inaccurate).

This actually isn't quite correct: the way you pronounce Reah (even in Japanese) is different from the way one would pronounce Lair, even if we take the whole European thing going on in the Ys series in account and use British English. IMHO, Lair is more of a bastardization than a romanization. How do you pronounce "lair"? Based on how I say it I can easily see how you could get there from レア. Though I don't like "Lair", why would you want the goddess to be named after a place where animals bed down, it is just as good a transliteration as "Reah" is. Depending on context "Lair" Rare" "Reah" and "Leah" would all be perfectly fine transliterations of レア. IMHO "Leah" would actually be most accurate based on pronunciation and context although I would still personally pick "Reah" because I like it the most. Most katakana words are Bastardizations in my opinion.

Wow! This is great Gideon! Thank you very much for finishing this release. : )
I've only had a few moments to play it so far due to lack of time currently, but I cannot wait to delve into it more as soon as I can!
Thank you very much for all of your hard work on this!

Finished it yesterday, came by to pay my respects.
Minor bugs aside (graphical glitches and flickering) this is a pretty well done translation. Very much appreciated Gideon!

Thank you.
Time to make time to find time for game time for the only Ys story I haven't played... time

Just as a note, the flickering and graphical glitches are present in the original game. That's not something the patch caused. As far as Lair vs Reah, that's up to Deuce.

Well, I think I remember Deuce telling how he didn't like Reah, in some posts back in the day. So, I'm guessing polls won't change his mind.

How do you get the hair color change option? did I miss something? I'm near the end of the game and I still haven't unlocked it. It's on my old save on the Japanese version.

In the sand city (I forgot its name) go behind the building on the top right. Mash A to talk to someone hiding there and he'll grant you "the magic". You can then change your hair color under Options menu.
Do this before the sandstorm hits the city and buries it on sand.
