I think he just lost interest, but not enough to openly say it. I think that's how he works: pick a project he's in the mood for, kinda begin on it, declare it's 99% done in his page without reaching even 10% in actuality, leave it to rot, and if anyone dares pick it up, scream "I'm working on it!!!! MINE!". And bump into other projects that are actually moving forward such as Fire Emblem 3 and then stagger them and repeat all of the above, until the project is taken back by the original staff and finished. So, don't put much faith in his fictitious "80%". We are at the mercy of other hackers (not translators: Deuce already translated it!) to do it, or we learn Japanese ourselves. (I think the latter might be worth it!) Has a script already been posted somewhere on a readme file or something?

I asked Deuce for it years ago, but he said he couldn't send it to me as the text was not organized in order of appearance or something.

so this is how Aeon Genesis works? starts a project never finishes it and moves on to another to do the same until the list of unfinished game builds up?

To be fair, he did recently say that he's currently out of work and needs to find a job soon. Still, whenever that gets sorted out, I kind of doubt Ys V is much of a priority for him compared to other projects, but that's purely the pessimist in me speaking.

And to be more fair aeon genesis is responsible for 75 fan translations including Ys IV snes. Also Gideon Zhi has always seemed like a nice helpful guy to me. I've not heard this story of someone wanting to pick up Ys V and Gideon Zhi saying no its mine. I'm not saying it didn't happen but I've never heard of it until now. At any rate there have been multiple translations of the same game before so nothing is stopping another hacker from trying.

If someone really wanted to do it, they could ignore him and ask for the translated script that Red mentioned.

Yeah, I think I should emphasize the guy is indeed, over the course of over a decade I think, responsible for a lot of complete (and almost-complete, like Ys IV SFC) projects. I don't know either whether anyone was approached by him for trying to hack Ys V especifically, too, but I do know this happened with at least one project, then there was the FE3 project case that I mentioned above. Those are just not cool. But yep, one has to give credit where it's due, and that goes to the amount of projects he finished. And of course, I am VERY thankful for the Ys IV SFC project, although incomplete and promised-to-be-fixed within weeks about 4 years ago.

Wait.. so is it official that Ys 5 will get a remake? Also... Ys 5 SNES got put on the back burner didnt it? I remember using a 80% patch some time ago that made the menu all jumble up.

Very very strong speculation however, given that Falcom has repeatedly expressed a desire to do so.

Oh man, I cannot wait until this has an official translation! (or a full fan translation at least). I have played and beat Ys V Expert but I've only understood bits and pieces of what was going on. Hopefully there will be further news about this title.

Very very strong speculation however, given that Falcom has repeatedly expressed a desire to do so. Not exactly. Falcom expressed an interest at making both Ys 8 and the remake for this game in the interview: (http://www.siliconera.com/2012/09/18/next-Ys-game-could-be-Ys-eight-or-an-Ys-v-remake/). Plus, if we are looking at the trend, Ys III was remade using Ys VI's engine and Ys IV was remade using Ys Seven's engine. So it's likely that Ys 5 will be remade using the new engine. Since Ys games are coming out once every 3 years, if we assume there will be an original Ys game that introduces the new engine in between, we are looking at almost five years from now for the remake of this game I really hope Falcom release an Ys game next year but that's very unlikely given that it's the 10th anniversary for the Kiseki series. Sigh... Oh man, I cannot wait until this has an official translation! (or a full fan translation at least). I have played and beat Ys V Expert but I've only understood bits and pieces of what was going on. Hopefully there will be further news about this title. There is an Ys wiki that explains the general story of Ys V: isu.wikia.com/Go to this website and look at character entries for Ys V, which should explain some important story bits. I will be updating this wiki with more information on Ys V some time next week so look forward to that if you want. Also, feel free to explore around the wiki since there are lots of information on each game in the series even though most of them are incomplete. Do be wary of spoiler, though.

This is not dead. This has never been dead, it has just not been a priority. This fact needs to be stressed. I've been extraordinarily busy the last three years. I've been working full time, I've been studying full time, and I've been trying to squeeze some romhacking in on the sides while still taking some leisure time and attempting to keep myself sane. Romhacking hasn't happened nearly as often as I'd like, and the frequency of my releases has dropped off sharply. With as little time as I've had, I've wanted to spend it on more rewarding (read: easier) projects. Ys 5 is an absolute nightmare to work with. It's far and away one of the most complex games I've ever looked at, and I've looked at a lot of games. That said, it's seen a fair amount of progress in the last five or six months. I've posted an update with 23 new screenshots on the site. It's not done, and it's not even bug-free, but it's a lot closer to being done today than it was this time last year. As a further point, I feel I need to address peoples' concerns about the way I operate. I have to stress that I'm not against asking for help, or even handing a project off to someone else, but I *am* hesitant to do so. I'm very, very good at what I do, even if I don't necessarily work as quickly as people would like. But what I absolutely will *not* do is hand a project off to someone if I feel as if that person's final product would not be at least as good as my own. I have fairly high standards, and as I've stated Kefin is a real bastard to work with. If you can show me that your work could be/would be/already is better than mine? I'm generally more than happy to accept the help on a languishing project. But I can count on one hand, with fingers left over, the number of people who I feel would be able to meet my standards. Anyone else would end up very confused - as I am, frequently, when dealing with this thing! - and even if they were able to release a complete translation, it wouldn't be anywhere near as nice as you might hope. That may be acceptable to some; to me, it is not. Please don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to sound arrogant or hurt anybody's feelings! I just have really high standards.

Gideon Zhi Thank you for your continued work on this. I know it will be great when it is finished. Good luck squashing the rest of those bugs, and life in general.

Hey as the translator and hacker, you have the reigns, so no complaints from me. I just want the finished product ^_^.

My favorite part is the wish to finish the translation this year (though also realizing it probably won't happen). To me that implies that most of the worst bugs are out of the way. Hopefully no more new nasty ones are discovered.

Okay, dropping this here for now. I'll be updating the website within the next day or two with the information, but for now, we're targeting Thanksgiving as a release for Ys 5. Turns out the menu stuff was a whole lot less of a headache than I was expecting, and aside from the title screen and one string of 8x8 text that appears during a boss fight, both of which are relatively easy issues to tackle, the hacking on the project is done and all that's left is to wait for Deuce's edit and to run a playtest. (I'd actually been hoping for a Veterans Day release for the last few days, and while that's not entirely out of the question, given how unstable the game has been I'd rather dedicate a reasonable amount of time to testing rather than rush it out the door.)
So yeah. Sooner rather than later!
