I got this game the other day and am pretty disappointed, has anyone else played it yet?
First of all it take forever to get the game going. It's a good 45 minutes or so into the game before you can fight some enemies. If this were a console game, it wouldn't be so bad... but for a portable game it seems excessive.
I finally got out into the field and found the regular enemies to be braindead, it's basically impossible to get hit unless you just stand there doing nothing.
Then you get to the first boss and he has 4500 hit points. You do about 5 points per hit. You have Dogi helping out so you don't have to hit the boss 1000 times, but it sure feels like it. About halfway through the fight I start to get bored and that's when I start making mistakes (you die in about 4-5 hits).
I'd hate to have to restart on Easy, but I also don't want to run around leveling up so I am strong enough to do more than .1% damage to the boss. Is there something I am missing? Every once in a while the boss will freeze and turn yellow and a marker shows up on him saying "rush." But when I hit him it just seems to be doing the same amount of damage.

I'll let u know in a week, when I can play the game. But usually in a Ys game all you need is a few level up and the right equipment and the boss should go down with the proper stragtedy.

I can read Japanese fluently, don't think I missed anything explained in the game. I mean, the game is pretty simple. You have an attack button and a dash button and you can hold a trigger and press attack to do specials.

I just checked the instructions and they don't mention anything about it sadly. They do mention that there is a parry move, which isn't explained in the very basic battle tutorial included in the game.
I restarted on Easy and the boss was indeed easy. It seems the RUSH mode is just when the boss creature's stun gauge depletes and you get some free hits.

Also, Gurumin's dodging, which is a HUUUUUUGE plus for me.
To be honest though, I don't mind the game starting off slowly and easy. As long as it picks up a few hours in, I'm all over it. It just appeals to me too tremendously to pass up.

I liked Zweii and Xanadu Next (especially Xanadu Next), just not feeling this game right now. I'll give it a couple more days and see how I feel.
I can't think of any game the parry move could have come from, although it is pretty similar to parrying in fighting games, or maybe the parry system in the Way of the Samurai games.
In Ys Seven you hold R and press L right when the enemy attacks, it cause you to flash for a second and bring your shield up. According to the instructions if you miss the timing you will take more damage than you normally would.

Is the whole "actually being able to use your shield to block attacks" thing from any previous game, though? Played Ys V lately?

So it helps a lot if you buy armor before fighting the first boss haha The game is still way too talky and long-winded, but at least the actual game parts are pretty fun. One thing that sort of has me worried is Falcom is really trying to advertise this as an epic-length game like, say, Dragon Quest... whereas Ys has traditionally been a series of short but sweet action games. Even on the back of the box they mention as a point that the game is full of extra stuff to do, and there is indeed a lot to do: -side quests -item creation (you collect monster parts which can be used to create items) -leveling up skills -optional bosses (from reading the instructions I get the impression these are like the Weapon bosses from FF7) Dragon Quest IX got a lot of criticism for adding these MMORPG-like elements, so it will be interesting to see how Ys Seven handles this.

I don't get the complaints about the intro length at all. I'm busy killing stuff on Altago Field now and it just didn't feel long. No longer than any other RPG I've played in recent years, that's for sure.

It was just so boring, that's why it felt long. Even going through it again, holding down X to fast forward through it, it takes a good 10 mins.

Eh, wasn't boring to me. I'm liking the setting, I guess.
Meanwhile, just beat the first boss on hard second try. Wasn't particularly difficult.

Not really related to the thread but I see that omgfloofy has been hard at work with her blog! omgfloofy.livejournal.com/Also, about long intros and whatnot, the only time that they really bother me is when I have to go somewhere and I CAN'T SAVE BECAUSE THE BLOODY THING KEEPS GOING. I don't like to leave a handheld system idling (including the DS). ^^ Blargh. Didn't get any EMS tracking number from Falcom. What's up with them these days? I guess it's cuz it's done manually (like actually copying and pasting the generic text and the tracking number) that they don't always send it out. Hoping it comes today or tomorrow. >:| (But the question is, will the game hold my attention or will I be drifting back to Scribblenauts? XD)

They haven't sent tracking numbers out automatically for ages, have they? I definitely didn't get one for Origin, had to specifically request it. Which I did. Because I was impatient.

Once I remembered to buy armor, the boss indeed was easy even on hard. So far I haven't had to stop to level up, so besides all the boring town parts this game is pretty cool so far. Not as good as Felgana nor Napishtim, but pretty good.

Ah, so that's what it was. I did wonder why anyone would find it that hard, heh. I was L4 and had a synthed weapon for Adol by the time I got to the boss though.
Just beat the second boss, loving the game so far. I still hate that it's on the PSP (have to keep taking breaks cus the controls hurt my thumb a lot, and the low res grainy graphics aren't exactly appealing) but the game underneath is great fun. Switching characters to target weaknesses feels exactly like Zwei 2, so it's not an issue, and because of the dashes and stuff the game feels really fast. Also, load times really are borderline nonexistent.

Yeah, the graphics are alright for a PSP game I guess, but it definitely feels like a huge step down from the PC games (or even the PS2 ports).
This game is definitely the biggest change to the formula since Napishtim, that's for sure. It plays very well, hopefully it will just get better and better as I get into it.

That blog will come in quite handy when I get around to playing the game... ^.^
Lucky me it was sitting on my counter when I arrived home today. YAY! I'm commencing to mess with the CDs first, though.

So all of you are receiving your copies already? I need to see what is going on with Yakra's Ys Seven Pre-Order purchase then... I haven't heard anything back from Falcom in awhile and I haven't seen that they've charged it yet which is puzzling. Hmm.

When did that order go in? If it has months before then that's... weird. I know someone else who preordered two days before release and hasn't heard from them though, in the run up to the release followed by the big chain of holidays that is this week they're probably delayed, so you might hear something either the end of this week or the next. Might as well shoot them an email anyway, though, sometimes they forget, like they did with my VMP preorder.
