Lol, I see. As a matter of fact, I do know some Cantonese myself, so I did get some Cantonese vibes from the word. And to tell the truth, I'm not that into Chinese history (despite having Chinese origins and knowing the language myself). Oh well, still a nice poem.
I'm not a literature kind of person per se, and I look up to people like Weird Al for inspiration in rhyming stuff... so yeah... that's about as far my "poetic sense" goes.

I love to research mythologies of all kinds of places. And naturally that figures in ancient histories too since the two are usually invariably intertwined. It's really amazing how many ancient wars began over myths. O.o; Then again, looking at present day politics.. hmm.. Several millenia later verse, same as the very first? As to poetry..all I'll say is rhyming is a very tiny part of it rather than it's end all and be all. I far prefer free verse myself. Metered of course...if I can't find a rhythm in the poem- I don't like it generally, unless the writer REALLY had a helluvaway with words. --- The Widow --- A sea of broken dreams... It spreads ever on before me. All that I once was, All that I could have been; Lost in the waves of despair. Oh my shattered dreams, Vanishing beneath ice tipped pain; Leaving me behind, A widow mourning her loss. Forgotten and faded. Will you not swallow me as well, Bear me away from my pain... Are you so cruel a creature; Oh sea of loss and despair- To take all I had and yet leave me? I stand upon the widow's walk, Weeping away the last dreams... I give them to the harsh sea, I spread my arms to the sky... And let the sea take what little it left me. Oh my shattered dreams, I vanish now past your pain; Reunited we are; I am a widow no more, Lost and mourning....

Bad me, double posting. Oh well. =P Two new poems.

Raven and Rose
---
A raven's wing wrapped about me, From its beak a black rose fell.... Where its thorns cut rose blood for all to see; Sending a vile seed in my heart to dwell.
Grow wild, cruel thorns; Twine yourselves about me- Encase my soul from life's storms; Let no more pain be known to me.
So did I step away from life; Sheltered by thorn and wing... My heart guarded from joy and strife; And all the pain they could bring.
Strike sharp, black raven; Drive all others who reach away. Perhaps they shall think me craven, Though little does it matter what they say.
Armed with a raven's cruelty, Guarded by the blackest rose; No one will dare come near me... Nor shall I care once my heart has froze.

Step by Step
---
Step by step, I wander- Step by step, walls close in.
Once I knew my way... I never had to question; Never once did I wonder, Where I meant to be.
Step by step, I'm lost- Step by step, the way closes.
Once I knew my dreams... Hopes ran high in me; Fear was something unknown, For someone other than me.
Step by step, I'm afraid- Step by step, night is coming.
How did it come to end... When did it suddenly become so hard; Paths overgrown and lost, Dreams faded and gone.
Step by step, I falter- Step by step, I've gone nowhere.
Regret is the only path now... Bramble laden and sharply graveled; I can walk it only with bared feet, Elsewise, I stay forever lost.
Step by step, I'm bleeding- Step by step, but I'm moving on.
