Ok, I know I posted in another thread that I got Ys I&II Complete to run properly on my new laptop with Windows 7 (64-bit) and, technically, I have...but with issues. First off, I already had these games installed on my old laptop with Windows Vista (32-bit) and they ran with no issues.....now on to my issues. I rip all the files exactly as described in the English patches to the appropriate folders and everything patches just fine. What I get are graphical glitches. The game is technically running fine, as is the music, but the colors are all messed up. After messing around with as many settings as possible, I got it to run perfectly...almost. In the "Properties" tab, I check off "Run at 256 colors" and "Run at 640x480 resolution" (Checking run in Windows Vista mode had no effect either way) and they both run perfectly.... I then decided to try a new game. After the opening movies play, the game starts with the graphical glitches again! Ok *sigh* so NOW I try the old "disable the AVI movies" and....it works! So, now I'm like "Damn, it's taking a lot to get it to work on Windows 7/or my new laptop! I decide to play a bit of Ys II. As I'm playing, I decide to check out the diary for something and guess what? When I exit the diary back into the game, the glitches pop up again!!! grrrr.. Any ideas what is causing this? I tried to take a screenshot of the game when the glitches show up and, you know what? The screenshot somehow comes out normal!! Here are two cell phone pics of what the glitches look like...

Me, Wyrd. On Windows XP, back when I played that in 2005 and 2006. I only played Ys I-II COMPLETE with the english patch, too.

I can't be 100% sure, but I can almost swear that I was also able to go through the diary and go back to the game with no glitches when I ran it on my old laptop with Vista.. It's just kind of disheartening that i have to check off all these different options , sacrifice the movies, and have unexplained odd little glitches when, just a few weeks ago, it ran with no problems (and all the movies too) on Vista... *sigh* oh well. At least they mostly work Oddly enough, I never had any issues with OiF. It runs flawlessly for me on Windows 7 on my new laptop..

This is pretty great since I'm a windows 7 user as well, though the loss of the movies is disheartening... Honestly, I know the game like the back of my hand, so I might just play Chronicles on my PSP, but this is a nice backup regardless.
Also, OiF, Origin and AoN all work fine for me despite being on windows 7.

Not mac, or Linux, or on a Star Trek Tricorder They are pretty easy to get going if you have a cheap PC though, which is usually what I have.

All I can say is that the graphical glitches look like what sometimes happen if you minimize the game to do something else, and then go back to it later (or perhaps that's just me).
As for the diary, I haven't had any issues with that, with or without the translation patch (Windows XP). I do know that whenever I access it, the screen will re-adjust itself, which has only once produced glitched graphics (that I remember), but it's nothing recurring like in your case.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yeah, that's exactly what the glitches remind me of too...though I never minimize the window. As for the diary, it is also as you described. It kind of readjusts itself when I open it and upon closing it, the game screen adjusts itself again and thats when the glitches reappear.. Try disabling DirectDraw acceleration from DirectX Diagnostic Tool to see if Ys I & II Complete runs better? Just remember to enable it again after playing the game. I just tried this and, you know what? Windows 7 wont allow me to change it! Im running it as Administrator but the option to disable wont pop up! I have read elsewhere about some other users running into the same problem.... *sigh* Oh well. I guess I just gotta accept that this how I can run Ys I&II Complete on my laptop now. On the bright side, at least I CAN run it, right?

Okay, it seems I've run into some issues.
Well, I've disabled the AVI movies and set up all of the compatibility settings as instructed. The colors are restored and all is well...
Except for the first few minutes of playing and after every time I saved, the fps takes a significant nose dive to 19. Additionally, sometimes during gameplay the colors go back to being distorted (at least in Ys I).

I was getting those flickerings in Vista when I first got my new computer, but DON'T have them now, after owning the computer for a year. I think the difference might be upgrades to my video drivers and such, which corrected the problem. I recommend checking your video card's website and upgrading your drivers, then seeing if you still have the problem. -Tom i installed new updates manually but teh screen still flickers,

Just built a new computer running Windows 7 (64) and game runs, and is playable, but... Getting odd colors during the start up of the game, and a flicker here and there. Tried all the above tricks, and it doesn't change anything. Hmmmm... Even with the movies disabled, I get the odd color fixed for a portion of the game, but then randomly goes back to the flicker/odd color scheme.

I'm running the game via Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro and I've gotten it to work (somewhat, still getting the screen flickering). Here's what I did. I went into my Nvidia control panel and went to the manage 3d setting and either turned off every setting or went with the defaul (for the ones that don't let you turn that setting off). Everything in the game is working, the videos, the sound (both effects and music). The screen flicker is the only thing I'm getting. I'm going to try to see if I can get the games to run in a virtual machine under OS X with XP running. It won't be the most ideal setup, but it might just work. Another thing that I'm going to try is the Windows XP mode that comes with Windows 7 professional. I'll let you guys know if it fixes the problems. update The XP mode that comes with 7 is a no go. The game installs, but it can't access DirectX and errors out. I just installed it under VmWare Fusion in OS X and it works great. Unless the graphical issues and screen flickering can be fixed, it looked like a virtual machine will be the best way to play these on Win 7. I recommend either Virtualbox or Windows Virtual PC (both of which are free). Keep in mind you'll need a Windows XP installation and a computer that is capable of virtualization (majority of computers today are). Sure its not the most ideal setup, but it works.

I just thought I'd offer a little something with regards to running this. Rather than bothering with task manager it is probably better to create a batch file to run the game. All you have to do is create a new text file in the same directory as the executable and enter this (or the equivalent for Ys II):
@echo off taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe Start /wait ys1_win.exe Start explorer.exe
Then just save the file as something like ys1.bat, and you're away. It will shut down explorer, run Ys, and the run explorer again when you exit Ys, plus you can redirect the shortcut to it if you like.

Hi fellow Ys fans.
I have great news i figured out how to fix this windows 7 problem for 32bit without having to do anything to regedit. 1 check 256color 2 check 640 X 480 3 windows 95 4 click on YsI & II COMPLETEÝ’è on your desk top and uncheck the directx 7 box 5 use old border for best results
this solves the issue because the problem is direct X 10/11 is incompatible.
now you will hove no probs minimize or whatever vids video all perfect.
Note* font is still wierd for some reason.

It's been a LONG time since I last played Ys I & II Complete, so I'm not certain, but my Ys I seems to be running slowly. It's running at a constant 20 fps. Is that the normal framerate? Ys II is running at 1300 fps...
I'm on Win7 64-bit.

This tool fixes the problem flawlessly, except that you have to run this tool every time you play. It also applies to a lot of other games. Attachments:
