Zelda 2 was fun. It kinda pissed me off when a villager randomly turned into a bat and killed me, though. >_>
Actually, I'm probably even more of a Zelda oddball, since my favorite is, BY FAR, Majora's Mask.

It probably would be, it's very unique and the depth of the NPC characters is amazing. That's why I love it. The main quest is far from the longest, but it's exciting and fun all the way through, unlike most other Zeldas which have some bumps along the road.

Ignoring the Ys V issue since I can't comment on that, I would love to know what manner of magical version of Secret of Mana you were playing, because the version I played had unimaginably bad hit detection. And even if my attacks did hit, the game would take like 3 seconds to register it, which gave the enemies enough time to bash my face in before actually being stunned by my attack. I agree entirely. Poor hit detection, annoyingly broken magic system, entirely slow gameplay... basically it's a game that was made "just to be pretty". I prefer Ys V and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (or even the original Zelda! Or the black sheep, The Adventure of Link!) by a wide margin. The only time this system was perfect, was in Sword of Mana -- or maybe it was just my mind registering it as "Ah, this is Final Fantasy Adventure, so I love it!".

Granted it's been a long time since I last played Secret of Mana, but as I remember, the hit detection in that game was pretty much pixel-perfect. I don't recall having the slightest difficulty hitting enemies in Secret of Mana at all. Same here. However, I wonder if you also played that game from beginning to end, like, 20 times or more like me. XD My point with that is, I'm pretty sure the hit detection was pretty much perfect, which is why I find odd that complaint... As for the magic system, though, I always liked it, but yeah, I have to admit it's broken as hell. XD But I find it so fun. And don't forget the multiplayer! I played this with many friends throughout the years. There was a time I was able to play it with 3 people, even! I don't know of any other SNES game that enabled multiplayer like that, but I guess there probably were some more. Also, about the Zelda talk here, well, I don't find too odd that someone's favorite Zelda game is Majora's Mask. Sure, it isn't among my personal favorites, but it's a damn fine game, and a pretty unique Zelda in many ways. Loads of fun, too. But finding Zelda 2 to be the BEST Zelda game is... wow. XD Actually, I DID like Zelda 2, but... it's certainly not among my favorites. By the way, Wyrd, if you liked it so much, you should check out the japanese version too: I heard many boss battles in that version were COMPLETELY different. Also, no wonder you enjoyed Ys III so much, as those two games have a lot in common. xD

xD
Though I have to say learning boss patterns in Secret of Mana didn't help toooo much, as they ALSO spammed magic attacks on you at times, more or less. xD
Actually, it's so much worse in Seiken Densetsu 3: even with ALL the resources, that game is FRIGGIN' HARD! Especially in certain routes of the game. (I heard Duran's and Angela's routes, for example, had the least-hard final bosses. While some others' were nearly "impossible".) OmG, I so feel like playing Seiken 3 now... W_W

That tiger boss in Secret of Mana made me rage. I had a convo with a friend of mine that was like:
"So, uh, how do I stop that tiger from stunlocking me with spells?" "You don't." "No, honestly, I can't beat this thing..." "Haha, you think I'm joking." "..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
And then I raged.

Well, that sounds like the recipe for a terrible game to me. =/

But bosses are an important part of games like this! It's okay if they're just not up to par (well, not ok, but you know...) but if they actually suck, I don't think it's a detriment you can just brush off like it's nothing. If a 3D Zelda game had horribly broken and "unfun" bosses, I'm sure people would give that game HELL for that.

I know, I just mean it's weird because it sounds like most people don't even care that the game has terrible bosses for some magical reason. I mean just because one part of a game is good (which I don't even think it is, haha) that doesn't erase the bad parts. That wasn't directed at anyone here, though, it's just the general experience I've had with SoM discussion on the internet.
At least the people here were honest enough to admit that they just adhered to the magic system instead of saying it was actually good, though. I've had... bad experience with that on Gamefaqs. >_>

Actually... even with magic, sometimes it's not enough. It depends.
For example, the main character doesn't have magic at all. The female one only gained an offensive magic spell or another much later on in the game. (Her first attack spell was the fire one, if I recall correctly. Maybe even the only one?) So only the sprite guy could be the wicked spell user. But he doesn't have infinite MP or whatever; it's actually VERY short in the beginning, and you also can't really afford some of those MP-healing nuts at that point. And even later on when you can afford them, you can't carry more than 4 units. The result is simple... boss fights weren't always easy. Actually, some boss fights were actually hard! Even when your level is average. And obs.: max MP is 99.
Some bosses gave me some minor "traumas" back when I was a kiddie, even. xD I recall many rather scary (for a 5-year-old or so) deaths in boss fights in that game. xD Like being crushed against the wall against the second boss that had eyes on a wall. And some others. xD
And suddenly, I'm recalling the game's soundtrack and story... <3

The soundtrack was great, and the story was... Well, it was kind of cozy, if you know what I mean.
I would have liked to see it to it's end, really. Well, at least I liked Legend of Mana.

Indeed, Legend of Mana was TIGHT! I loved that game so much!! And I got it for only $5! Same with Parasite Eve and some others... I LOVE it when game rental places go out of business, just for this reason! Back to Secret of Mana: Well, the game DOES have pretty music and graphics. That's pretty much all I like about it, and as hj mentioned, the storyline is 'cozy'. I might pick back up where I left off soon -- some desert town.

Wow, Kakkara.... there's still a lot of ground. xD
The story gets better, by the way.
Anyway, nce trailer there, I guess? Not sure. What did they do with Maxim? ... =_=' And all that SE Final Fantasy Lufia feeling... well, as long as Lufia fans get satisfied with the game...

Heh, the tiger was a pain in the ass, but he did have a definite strategy. You really only needed to make sure you had some candies:

Those must all be human players, because the AI controlled characters weren't that helpful when I played. And besides, they just got lucky that the tiger didn't cast that spell right off the bat. It even paralyzes you and damage you after it's done, giving the tiger plenty of time to recast or kill you and/or your party members while you can do nothing except flail around like an idiot.
It's so rage-inducing and unfair, which is something games like that should never be.

For The Savior remix, which I ripped directly from the official website. Because, you know, it's Lufia. I like Lufia. A lot.

Those must all be human players, Absolutely impossible: the only human player there is the the bow-wielding one; if the other two were human-controlled, a "2" and "3" would have appeared in each of the other two characters' icons, which didn't. The AI characters always were helpful. Of course, not as helpful as an human player, but still. They always were satisfactory. It even paralyzes you and damage you after it's done, giving the tiger plenty of time to recast or kill you and/or your party members while you can do nothing except flail around like an idiot. It's so rage-inducing and unfair, which is something games like that should never be. And it never is. About the "burning" status (fire paralyze that slowly reduces your HP for a while), it can be cured with an item. I forgot the name. It's that herb thingy. And it's pretty cheap, too (maybe even the cheapest item in the game). The girl also has a magic to cure it too (but I don't think she learned it by that point; if I recall correctly, that tiger boss was the 3rd one, while she learned said magic right after the 4th boss fight).
